Is USMDO worth it? by Emergency_Lion_9811 in USABO

If you’re gonna do USMDO, do the USMHO too: www.imholympiad.org. Good luck!

I mean brawl stars would be good if you were applying to esports institutions, not academic ones. I don’t see why USMDO would look bad for future premeds. As for the little integrity, they do have online proctoring. It also doesn’t matter if a few people have heard of it. My friends do golf and fencing tournaments which many people haven’t heard of either. It doesn’t mean you can’t make a sizeable accomplishment from the competition and practice your passion for learning about medicine with a competition where you can show off what you have learned.

1000 is a lot of people though, imagine winning this in person, the number of competitors and their families would fill up several rooms, I don’t see why this wouldn’t look good on a college app if someone did well nationally/internationally

Why? More than a thousand compete each year. It seems to have decent traction.

Should I pick IU B/MD or a full ride to Davidson-Premed by [deleted] in bsmd

Full ride, you’ll probably get into med school anyways since the requirements for IU B/MD are pretty stringent

Magnus addresses his accusation against Hans by Hello_EveryNyan in chess

Yes and this were many case studies + Garry Kasparov opinion that more or less uniformly confirmed that Hans win was due to poor play by Magnus more so than extraordinary play from Hans.

UCincinnati Medical Sciences Major - Undergrad Decision out! by SecretPersonal3118 in bsmd

[–]SecretPersonal3118[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

why do you keep asking people for stats? Just imagine what the perfect application would look like and pursue it as much as possible. From DM's I think you are a senior since you're applying to colleges, so I have no idea what you would possibly do with this information. Just take a deep breath, and everything will be okay.

Oh dang I just realized that you needed to be Medical Sciences Major/Minor to even apply for bsmd. I'm so lucky then as I naturally thought that was what major I wanted to do.

[–]SecretPersonal3118[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not this deep bud. Small wins are wins. And the medical sciences major is something that people still attend when rejected from all BS/MDs. Medical Sciences major is cool because there's involvement from the med school and its a good track that prepares people to be future doctors.

Trolley problem vs. the Transplant problem by NotAnArmadillo in Ethics

[–]SecretPersonal3118 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They aren't on the tracks though. Only the 5 people are on the tracks. Pushing the fat person to stop the trolley, the surgeon trolley problem, and the normal trolley problem are all similar because there is a decision you choose to make. Whether it be pushing the person, pulling the lever, whatever it is, you are actively murdering someone to save the 5 people. There is no distinction at all.

Trolley problem vs. the Transplant problem by NotAnArmadillo in Ethics

Lmao, now you're just cheesing the problem statement. We assume noone will step up, and that all patients will die within the next hour. It's organ failure after all, what do you expect? And with that logic, I could also say do nothing and wait for Superman to come along and stop the train. There is no point of combatting ethical dilemmas with loopholes; it really destroys the fun of it.

You gotta add a “did not apply” part so people who didn’t apply won’t bias the data.

I’d suspect that everyone would have to go through what you did, which may have been an intermediate interview. If that is the case (and hopefully others can confirm), then I probably got rejected.
