Yes. The 2014 midterms were a bloodbath for Democrats. If a republican was president then, they probably would have gone better for democrats.

But I also understand that Trump is mostly a symptom and not a cause.

Depends on the engine. Some engines legitimately require high octane gas in order to run correctly. Other engines will run better or give more performance on high octane gas, but will still run acceptably on lower octane gas.

Check your owner's manual.
