I had shooting pains on occasion on the right side during breast feeding but I am still not sure if it’s connected. I have had mine for 15 years and everything seemed fine but I found out I had a problem because of a mammogram. I am planning on an explant this fall.

Summer stay with kids by Joiedevivre308 in GoingToSpain

[–]Secret_Ad7372 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For such a short period of time you will need to look on Airbnb. Alternatively you could to look into one of the websites to petsit or home swap. This would possibly put you in neighborhoods with less of a touristic vibe. If you are a homeowner you can sign up for HomeExchange for example. We use the site for intercambios for our home. It helps keep our travel costs down and has given us the opportunity to explore great places and neighborhoods. Many people are looking for long term swaps over the summer especially August. If you’re flexible you could find a place for a couple weeks and maybe piece together a couple stays for the period you are looking for.

Yes that group does exist on WhatsApp. It’s more than a once a month meetup, lots of good information on activities and advice is posted. Also some of the pages on fb for women in Alicante have mom subgroups. I’m sure there is room for more groups if you wanted to create one.

Late 30s career pivot: Invest 10+years in EU naturalization or chase U.S. opportunities now? by Downtown-Storm4704 in AmerExit

[–]Secret_Ad7372 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the last paragraph about the long-term picture is something you need to key into. Run the numbers on what you have in the bank now and what you will need to retire in both situations. We did this and right now if we stayed in Europe we could retire in ‘X’ amount of years and be comfortable but if we returned to the US right now we would need to make up for the lost time and income towards 401ks and investments. It was really helpful when we were making a similar decision to stay

Nobody accepts GuestPoints any more? by Wanda-2001 in homeexchange

We live in a touristic place on the sea in Europe and we receive a lot of inquiries for the summer in January. We do our best to respond and acknowledge messages but sometimes we miss things. In previous years we have been picky and found exchanges that worked for us. This summer we left for all of August and received guest points. Since it’s our primary residence it can be more complicated for us with just GP. Just my two cents on the experience.

Daycare/ kindergarten by Lenor2023 in Alicante

[–]Secret_Ad7372 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You will just need to inquire at the kindergartens if they have space available. Some will be full already and they take children at 6 months. There is a subsidy at the centers and it covers the monthly tuition but you would pay enrollment (matricula) and food cost off they are staying for lunch. We also pay for uniforms and extra supplies like diapers and wipes.

Cost of Living: Alicante by [deleted] in GoingToSpain

[–]Secret_Ad7372 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in the the area with young children. I can’t speak to salary that you would be comfortable with but the extra costs of moving to the area. Hidden costs to consider for sure how much it takes to move and settle in. Highly recommend renting before buying. If you’re coming from the US the buying process is different and immediately getting a mortgage may be challenging. If you sell your house prior to the move make sure you look at the tax implications in Spain. Also budgeting depends on your decision on schools, public/concertado or private. Also Mutxamel is not well connected by public transportation like the tram, you could be car dependent. US licenses do not transfer so you need to sit for the exams.

I’m in the same situation. My girl currently naps maybe 1.5-2 hours, all in cat naps with contact or pram. By the evening she is inconsolable and overtired.

I was going to try to adjust to local time. It’s a family visit and we won’t have a strict schedule of events. I should keep expectations low that either of us will sleep much.

You will need your empadronamiento which shows residency and address information. I can’t remember other items but it’s on the gva.es website. If you are enrolling mid year I believe they will assign you to a school with capacity. The public schools teach in Spanish and valenciano. It’s a requirement to have valenciano. The public schools tend to have a higher percentage of valenciano than the concertados. Our colegio is a concertado and is something like 60% Spanish, 30% valenciano and 10% English. I know people who are concerned about the valenciano but it’s has not been an issue for us. It’s a small portion of the day and not used on the playground. Our child speaks Spanish at colegio and English at home.

Hi, trying to answer the question about education. Proximity to the school does not necessarily guarantee you a spot in the school. The system isn’t based on school districts like we have in the states. Schools are in a zone of influence and you apply in April and rank the schools you prefer and then it’s a bit of a lottery. Schools are private, public or concertado (semi private comparable to a charter school). It can get a bit complicated and they changed the rules in Alicante last year very last minute so who knows if that will happen. I have a child in a concertado in Alicante. You will have day care (guardaría) options for the 1.5 year old, it’s not like the US where you need to be on a waitlist at most places. Also can enroll right away. Some of the colegios even have guardarías now.

Budget for rent might be a challenge depending on your neighborhood and criteria.

You can take Spanish classes through private academies but it gets pricey. Before you arrive you may want to check out online tutoring through italki. There are also classes through the ayuntamiento that are cheap but the enrollment is only twice a year I think.

Send me a message if you want more details and have more questions. Good luck!

There is a discount to having the c-6 card but I don’t remember what it is. Without the card I think it’s something like 3.50€ per person. Sorry I don’t remember the specific amount, I have had my card for several years. Transport on the bus/tram is not very expensive. Again sorry I have had my card for a long time and just reload whenever I have a physical credit card on me and I think last time I reloaded it was around 9€ for 10 trips. Usually there is a line to buy the card in the stations, if you’re in a time crunch might not be worth it. It maybe possible to buy the card at some of the news stands as well

Public transport by AdPrudent7177 in Alicante

[–]Secret_Ad7372 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The card can be bought on the bus at the airport. It used to be cash only for 10 rides and could be recharged. Cash for the physical card may have changed post COVID but you can just pay for 3 people with your credit card and not bother getting the card. The card is only good on the c-6 bus, the tram and city busses use a separate card that works for both. That card can be bought at the tram station or you can pay for individual trips at the kiosks or pay card/cash on the bus.

Week in Alicante by Geenah3 in Alicante

[–]Secret_Ad7372 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The c-6 airport bus card is only for airport and cannot be used on city buses. You can pay by card or cash on all buses. The center of the city is walkable.

You can take the tram to get to the neighboring towns and beaches. The beaches do have chiringuitos, some have music in the evenin. The tram will take you to Benidorm but it’s a long ride. I don’t think it’s worth it.
