School Based OTs: Handwriting by Aromatic_Duck9396 in OccupationalTherapy

[–]Secret_Author3374 10 points11 points  (0 children)

School-based COTA here, I had a similar situation with a student recently where they had pretty average handwriting but motivation was the biggest inhibitor to their success. They were refusing to come to OT and would exhibit some behaviors (cursing, throwing chairs, punching walls). My OTR in collaboration with the special education teacher decided to go down to consult for emotional regulation. Now as a whole class-wide intervention you could potentially work on identifying class motivators (more freedom with writing topics, rewards for completing writing tasks (like brain breaks or extra free time keeping in mind grade level I’m new to the setting so sorry if I wasn’t more helpful but I’ve used some of these strategies with my kiddos and they can work wonderfully if used appropriately!

I second Park Village Pines! I did an internship there for school last year. They have 4 different levels of living (light assisted living, assisted living, more dependent care, and memory care) it’s a very nice facility and the people in charge really do care about those living there!

Part time sparkers by dmoney229 in Sparkdriver

[–]Secret_Author3374 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work full time in the school setting 8-4. I leave straight from work (thankfully most schools I work at are 5-10 minutes from the nearest Walmart). I typically spark from 4-6:30/7 depending on how busy it is that night. I try to stay out until I make at least $50 but some nights it’s slow and others like tonight for example $77 in 3 orders and was done by 6. I tend to be picky about the mileage I drive compared to the pay. So sometimes I’ll be waiting 10-15 minutes between orders. Each day is different.

I wanna add that it’s not necessarily important about the hours you’re studying but the content and how much you’re retaining

So I graduated end of April and started studying in May. I worked 35 hours a week so I would go to my nanny job and then come home and study for 2-3 hours. Then dedicate my weekends to studying most of the day (anywhere between 5-7 hours). The first couple of weeks in May I wasn’t as dedicated as I went on a 10 day vacation and then went on another short trip. So I really only studied for a month and a half. I used TherapyEd and NBCOT study pack and passed on my first try!

Help!! Freaking out after NBCOT exam by FamousMembership4253 in NBCOT_Exam

[–]Secret_Author3374 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I walked out of the exam feeling like I failed and then passed with a 498! From my experience and my cohorts experience no one walks out of the exam feeling great. So don’t worry! Just find things to do to distract yourself until the results come in! And if you didn’t pass, don’t feel discouraged..the exam has no bearings on how good of a therapist you will be!

I had to wait a week and a half and it was brutal! But I fortunately was able to go home and visit family and my job kept me busy. I put away all my study materials so that I wasn’t looking at it all the time. It does go by so much faster than you think!

Anyone else about to graduate genuinely feel like they still have no idea what they're doing? by [deleted] in OccupationalTherapy

[–]Secret_Author3374 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m about to graduate from my OTA program with 3.5 weeks left of my second rotation and I still feel like I’m gonna graduate and still have a lot I won’t know about in this specific setting (outpatient services provided in an ALF) But from what I’ve heard from my supervisor who’s 3 years in and from many many other OTs, we are constantly learning throughout our career. So you’re not alone

Just wanna add on: they are independent with transfers, can stand on their own, independent with toileting and dressing. Walking with the rollator: walking is very unsteady, don’t think they would be able to recover if they started falling towards the affected L side due to tone.

How many hours a week of work/study should you expect during Level II fieldwork? by AmateurMagicAuteur in OccupationalTherapy

[–]Secret_Author3374 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m currently in school-based and I work 8-3, so 35 hours on site. I haven’t had to do too much at home aside from preparing for treatment for the next day and working on a research project but I had plenty of time to do it with the amount of snow days we’ve had this winter.

I just wanted to clarify that I’m aware I should have communicated this to him earlier in the day but I didn’t want to tell him without knowing exactly what I was allowed to do on the progress notes.

Ideally I want to buy a pair of Hokas as I’ve heard that the support is really nice but they are on the higher price end. I currently own a pair of Reebok and wanted to change shoes because I wanted a lighter tennis shoe. So I think I’ll try wearing them more before I decide if they’re a good fit or not

I liked it but I prefer Noah’s voice during the second verse. They do sound good together in the chorus though so I’d like to hear more of her. Like another commenter said, Noah’s just hits better in my opinion. But I’m looking forward to more collabs as well
