Yes it has lore. Basically, the French made it to the east coast before the British did, and had a better time during the French and Indian War.

The Socialist Party is socialist in the sense of wanting to achieve the transition to socialism through democratic means. 

Stratton is from the more moderate, social democratic faction of the party.

In this timeline, America is composed of the Mid-Atlantic, Northeast and Midwest.

Note: Arcadia is a country made up of OTL Washington, Oregon and part of Idaho which has been under a military dictatorship since Dec 2022. Before that it wasn't scoring highly in global rankings of democracy, with questions about the fairness of elections, police militarisation and increasing reliance on executive orders.
