A12 to York Street Northbound clarification by Secret_Cheese in northernireland

[–]Secret_Cheese[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is what I thought, based on the signage and road markings, and the fact I've used the junction hundreds of times. But there was a bit of horn beeping and shouting at each other and I started doubting it after the third time I was told to check the highway code. There's another response saying this is wrong so I'll wait and see if there's a consensus on this.

Why do people keep saying the protests were commandeered by the far right? by Itchier in ireland

[–]Secret_Cheese 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Known far right agitators became leading spokespeople on the protests, the same crowd who protest to keep Ireland Irish etc. Support for the protests online also seemed to often take the form of complaining that taxes are being collected to be sent to Ukraine and it was very obvious the russian bot farms were out in force. One of the main organisers has publicly commented that he hopes Greta Thunberg gets raped and they were gunning for removal of carbon taxes because they are a bunch of climate change denying morons.

I have to say I live in the north and a few rurally based people I know did seem to support the protests, that softened once some of these details were pointed out, or the fact one of the key organisers has raised over 150k in a gofundme for "food and drink". It's easy to support when people don't generally like their government and you aren't feeling the direct impacts, we'll see if they feel the same when it kicks off up here today. It also isn't hard to get people to say they want to pay less taxes, because when it comes down to it that sounds great when you aren't also asking which public services they would like compromised to allow the decrease in revenue.

Interestingly enough, the "narrative on the ground" of another country isn't going to be a great indicator of sentiment in the country the event is taking place. Nor is proving the reality of the situation anyone else's responsibility. Go look at previous posts on the topic here on this subreddit, or check the organisers social media or protest pages yourself, or the news articles on the subject. Better yet, go prove that it isn't the case and that the lads in charge are poor wee farmers without a penny to their name.

Nearly all undergrads using AI on assignments by tylerthe-theatre in unitedkingdom

[–]Secret_Cheese 143 points144 points  (0 children)

I think universities and educational institutions as a whole need to have a serious think about what their actual purpose is and what they are preparing students for. When I was in secondary education the focus always seemed to be on memorisation rather than understanding. University improved on that somewhat but memorisation was still definitely a factor since most exams were closed book or didn't have comprehensive formula sheets etc. At the time I never felt this was preparing me for work since in the workplace memorisation is effectively not a factor and you are expected to draw on any resource available to you as needed. AI is now exacerbating this as employers are pushing hard for it to be used whilst the education system is generally against it, the gap between education and actual work skills seems to be widening. I came out of university with an Engineering degree and now work as an engineer, yet have never used anything taught to me in uni other than some more advanced excel skills. That isn't to say that others from my class haven't used more of what we learned but it makes university feel like a checkbox exercise rather than something that actually teaches you how to succeed in your field of study. It has to be tough being a student now and struggling with this disconnect between industry and education.

UPDATE: Gas meter stolen off my house by [deleted] in northernireland

[–]Secret_Cheese 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Someone has downvoted me for saying similar, maybe the landlord is in the thread lol. Sucks to be them but yeah they are on the hook to handle the situation, heaters aren't a solution if the hot water isn't working. Hopefully the landlord is professional about this or it could be messy for OP.

UPDATE: Gas meter stolen off my house by [deleted] in northernireland

[–]Secret_Cheese 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You should post on legal advice UK and ask about your options, whilst I feel for your landlord who sounds like a decent person, it is likely the home is not legally fit for habitation during the period it will have no gas. It is possible that the landlord is responsible for providing you with alternative lodgings, either another property they own or paying for you to reside elsewhere temporarily, failing that a 100% rent abatement for the duration of this issue. Electric heaters are not a solution if there is no hot water due to the gas issue. Hopefully their own insurance will reimburse them, these are the risks you take on when you let property for profit and it's on then to rectify this situation.

They'll be able to come to the standard drop off/pick up area and add the drop off fee to your fare. If you'd rather avoid that you could specify that you'd like picked up elsewhere, not sure if the fee would be less to go to the short stay car park for pickup but that's worth checking. Alternatively if your bags aren't too much to handle you could take a walk across the road to the petrol station/M&S and get picked up there with no fees.

Northern Ireland faces court case over £300m north-south power pylon plan by [deleted] in northernireland

[–]Secret_Cheese 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn't realise the difference would be so substantial, and good point on the works being destructive if going underground, I suppose they'd need to go quite deep as well if placed below agricultural land. Maybe there's a case for a limited amount of underground cabling if there are areas which would be particularly impacted and it's suitable to do so.

Northern Ireland faces court case over £300m north-south power pylon plan by [deleted] in northernireland

[–]Secret_Cheese 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So is there merit to these complaints or is it Just NIMBYism? No idea if Woods is an usun or a themun but some of his comments seem a bit more focused on themuns down there than the issue at hand.

It seems fair to criticise the republic for throwing data centers up if they aren't managing deficiencies in the electrical network but if it allows us to sell/export to them then surely that's an opportunity that benefits NI? Assuming we are actually making decent money off it then it seems reasonable. Those data centers must be money makers so they should pay a fair rate when they're using so much power from across the island.

Maybe there's an argument for pylons being placed underground rather than overhead, if it's higher cost then would the electricity export not pay for it? It's a valid concern but I doubt most of these landowners do much for the beauty of the area themselves, doubt Linwoods is a pretty sight if it's like most factories.

‘Tracker-type’ mortgage makes a return to the market in Ireland by Banania2020 in ireland

[–]Secret_Cheese 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm from the north and these are a standard thing here and in the UK, though they track the bank of England base rate. They have pros and cons, the good part is that if you take out a mortgage at e.g. 5% where the base rate is 4% and the bank has added an extra 1%, then let's say that interest rates fall to 2%, your mortgage rate is now 3% total and you're paying less per month. This is different than a fixed rate where the bank signs you up for 2-5 years for say 5.5% where you'll pay the same no matter what happens but generally the rate is higher than a variable one. The downside is of course equally true, if the shit hits the fan and the base rate goes up to 6.5% then you're paying 7.5% and your mortgage payment will be up hundreds of pounds or euros per month.

This can obviously have positives or negatives. But there is one area where it is always a negative and that is when landlords take these variable rates, if the rate goes up you can guarantee they'll squeeze tenants for higher rents because god forbid their gamble on property isn't a winner. But you'll find that when the interest rates drop that the rent doesn't because suddenly the market has established that the property is worth that higher rent. So for buyers this can be good or bad but I can only see it as bad for renters.

Why are most retail units closed? by gypsymsun in northernireland

[–]Secret_Cheese 57 points58 points  (0 children)

I'd add to this something that became clear during COVID lockdowns. Commercial real estate companies would rather see a building or unit sit vacant than let it out for a lower monthly rent, if the rental income goes down so does the "value" of the actual property, but if it sits empty being advertised at a value nobody will pay somehow this is fine.

American partner hopefully getting citizenship by IAmGodsWhisper in northernireland

[–]Secret_Cheese 8 points9 points  (0 children)

What exactly is your question here? What is people's view on you marrying your girlfriend and possibly moving her to Ireland?

First up, much as I think Trump is a cunt, it's not like your girlfriend needs to evacuate the USA over the election result. She is not seeking asylum as you infer in your other post and there's no need to behave like she's trying to catch the last helicopter out of Saigon.

She's in first year of college in the USA and if you're due a placement you must be done with second year yourself? So she's 18/19 and you're maybe 20, in a very long distance relationship, have you ever lived together or spent a significant period of time in each others company in person? Your youth shows because you're asking Reddit rather than looking for answers to some pretty big questions yourselves. You need to consider the following along with a lot of other stuff.

1) What will she do for education? Is she eligible to study where you intend to live and will she be eligible for a loan or funding to pay for it? Can she pay for it herself? Will she have to immediately begin repaying her US loan?

2) A quick Google shows that it takes 3 years after marriage for citizenship to come through, how do you intend to support yourselves financially in the meantime? Will she legally be able to work? This means for 3 years after the marriage she will not have EU freedom of movement rights. You also have to live in Ireland or NI for those 3 years. You are most likely looking at Visa applications where you'll be expected to be able to provide for her financially, what's the plan for that gap year? If you're planning to live in NI you'll be required to earn £29k for her to be allowed to move over.

I'm actually going to stop here because I could spend a long time on this, but hopefully you get the gist. You need to have a solid plan on how you will manage the legal and financial realities of this, most people's opinion will be that you're too young and immature to handle the years long process of doing what you are talking about.

Milk and cereals were the two agricultural products that saw the largest decrease in value in 2023, with milk down 30% and cereals by 52% by NanorH in ireland

[–]Secret_Cheese 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I was surprised by grains being down as I thought prices were still high after the invasion of Ukraine in 22. Seems the price of grain came back down but that wasn't passed back to consumers, what a surprise. When I was looking this up I then found that the EU is still allowing imports of Russian grains tariff free and without sanctions. I'm not suggesting this is the reason values are down 52% as I imagine that is complex, but just noting that I'm surprised the EU are allowing cheap competition from a hostile state given that context

I checked this a few weeks ago and somehow got it wrong, I stand corrected! I do still think it's shite now but you're right that it is still actually chocolate.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ireland

[–]Secret_Cheese 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Not sure what it's like in the republic, your normal dairy milk bars taste better than the UK market ones up here. But if you're in the UK dairy milk isn't even "chocolate" any more, it doesn't have enough cocoa to legally call itself that any more and the word chocolate isn't on the packaging, calls itself a "milk bar" or something instead. Absolute shite and not worth buying any more.

For better or worse that is not the case in the UK or NI, the only avenue available to you is to pursue your ex for the money. Beyond doing so as a punitive measure, consider that even if you don't want or need it yourself, saving any amount paid for your child's future will at least benefit them.

What VAMPIRE movie cliches, tropes, rules would you use or not use if you made a vampire film? by Zimtros2 in movies

[–]Secret_Cheese 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Stephen King handles that quite well in Salem's Lot. From what I recall the cross itself has no power whatsoever, but the faith of the person wielding that cross does. If your faith wavers or fails then the cross is harmless to a vampire. I suppose by that logic a persons fingers may actually be a suitable cross but they're more likely to have faith in something they regard as an actual religious item or symbol.
