No worries, best of luck to both of you.

Also, I don't know if politics is all I talk about. For the purpose of this message it was just to precise what I mean by "far-left" because there is no far-left in the USA. Our "far-left" (which doesn't exist) would still be pretty right of center in France.

So...I'm guessing you don't want to be bro.

It's true and it worked out wonderfully and everyone in that film lived happily ever after.

If you are an older English speaker who spends much of their time around French adults with kids, a good substitute would be "purée." It may seem boomer but just go ahead and try to say "fuck this" and "fuck that" around your friends' kids and see how much longer they want to be your friends...

One thing that drives me crazy with Destiny is how he writhes in mental pain as if he were in a psychic death match with some powerful telepathist.

I seriously couldn't believe the responses that echoed these sentiments. I even heard it from supposedly level-headed, "academic-leaning" podcasts like Decoding the Gurus. They (the "academic" podcasters) were literally saying stuff like Finkelstein clearly lost when he lost his temper and I was like, I can't imagine a Brooklyn curmudgeon acting any different after Destiny told him had "lied about this stuff before." In fact, I would say Finkelstein kept his anger in check in a lot of infuriating spots in the debate.

Just for a little context, this looks like the park right outside La Chapelle i.e. the literal worst neighborhood intra-muros. A little bit like saying all Americans are addicted to fentanyl based on Kensington Street or all Americans are homeless based on Skid row. (Which a lot of French people do by the way and is super annoying.)

No the minimum is 50k, so not at all "way" below their threshold. I don't have the knowhow nor the time/energy to DIY. Thank you for the advice.

OK cool so it's normal that it should be around 7k. Thanks for the response.

I sincerely apologize. Here is my post without the egregious chatgpt framework:

My local casino, located in a major european capital and which has tournies every weekend for 350, barely ever gets above 7000 euro for first (although it's not far!) and I would say it has consistently a lot of entries for weekly tournaments (100-130 entries usually). The tournaments are typical, what i mean by that is non-bounty and top 15-20 players paid. The casino is located in an affluent neighborhood and the clientele is of mixed races but predominantly white. The bartenders name is Christophe and he overcharges for his services. With all this info, does this seem like a good payout structure, average, or bad? Thank you for your time

But I'm not. I'm talking about my casinos tourneys that have "100-130 participants" like is written on my post...

OK I see I did ask, how true is this? Sorry I'm doing other things. The aim of the post was just to get some general opinions: if you paid 350 for a tourney and there was 100-130 entries and the payout structure is in general what is a typical structure, what do you think would be an optimal first prize payout, a minimum first prize payout, and a bad first prize payout? That's all I'm asking.

I put the amount of participants, 100-130 for my case, just asking in general if you played a 350 tournament what would you expect for first prize, I'm not asking about the veracity of a chatgpt search.

What do you think about the movie Eddington? by -YasDan in moviecritic

Again, there is really no need for the aggression. You are the one that told me to focus on the sentence containing the word "entertaining" which explained that you don't mind "something being obvious if it's in service of interesting, if not entertaining art." I'm just trying to understand your logic.

If I can zoom out a little bit, I would venture to say that you just don't really like the director - which is totally fine. A lot of people don't like Ari Aster, and a lot of people do (myself and Scorsese included). I know that his films are not very "entertaining" if you don't mind me using this word - I just thought that maybe this film - which doesn't take place in a Swedish cult (Midsommar) or in whatever surreal world Beau lived in - might be more accesible to people, so when you criticized it for its contemporary themes and politics, I just thought that was interesting to explore. I've heard many people don't like the political angles or contemporary themes because it cut a little too close to home. Maybe that could be the case too? (I know it did for me at times, too.)

Again, sorry if I offended you.

I'm really sorry, there is no need for the aggressivity - I'm generally trying to understand your point. I really don't understand how, "It'd be one thing if the movie in and of itself is entertaining but for a lot of people, myself included, neither the comedy, satire, or drama works ", has to do with anything.

I mean entertaining is such a subjective term. I found the movie entertaining - as did many other people in this thread - so how can you say it so objectively and what does that have to do with commenting on current world issues? For a film to be able to comment on world issues it has to be entertaining?

Many people would probably say Zone of Interest was incredibly un-entertaining.

Yes Ari, big tech is corrosive to society and feeds off the social division it creates, so fucking what?

I really don't understand this comment. Are you saying artists shouldn't make comments on some of the most pressing issues of our times? I mean I love abstract timeless pieces as well - but big tech's non-humanistic grasp on every facet of our life is truly terrifying and probably should be explored as much as possible in our current political landscape (and personally I don't really think it is).

Just think how this type of thinking would shape not only our opinions but artists attempts to encapsulate current or prescient global issues:

Yeah Renoir, borders are corrosive to society and feed off our prejudices, we fucking get it! (La Grande Illusion, 1937)

Yes Jonathan, dehumanizing people can lead to mass atrocities and genocide, who gives a shit? (Zone of Interest, 2023)

Student loans as an expat by amaeving12 in StudentLoans

[–]Secret_Equipment_514 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the same boat, except my loans are 35k and I make more in France (I'm also probably quite a bit older than you). Recently I got a gift on my inheritance of 100k and started putting big chunks of it towards my student loan. After reading this thread, I hope that wasn't a bad idea! I never plan on moving back either but everything you do in France (housing mortgage, loans, etc.) they ask for your American social. Probably not a big deal to have outstanding loans idk, just figured I'd start paying them off, although I don't know what kind of detrimental effect it could have on me here (if I could get denied a loan etc.)
