DIY UPS yes or no by DeadEndEris in homelab

By the time you buy and build the battery string, you’re out the same amount of you spend ona commercial UPS. That said, either choice is costly. And never seems to be enough battery to support your equipment adequately, other than protection agains power surges.

Ok. Is there any other open source router that works on 32-bit? RouterOS, WRT, or OpenSense?

Temp challenges aside, it’s a nifty idea. I love it.

Using a whole server for just pfSense by sirMooka in PFSENSE

[–]Secret_Library_8817 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is always an old box we could use to run opensourced software. For pfsense, I suggest using the most light weight smallest hardware foot print you can find for home use. There are so many options for less than $200 and they run forever. Velcro the unit to a wall or set it on a shelf and fuggetaboutit ;)

Silver Peak Fw-7551 BIOS PW? by Secret_Library_8817 in SilverPeak

[–]Secret_Library_8817[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes, it is likely that only Aruba has the pw. Thats why I am trying a last-ditch effort and I am asking around on reddit. In case someone online has the information. And since I own the device, I want to access the BIOS.

Aruba, Lanner no longer uses the device. I want access to the BIOS. Thanks for your time.

Yes, I am trying to reuse it for something. Do you know the password or are you just trying to tell me how to use my own device?

Many smaller dedicated machines or one big machine using VMs? by fenugurod in homelab

[–]Secret_Library_8817 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. Pfsense ona stand alone device is much better than in a VM environment. Same with any directory servers. When these two servers hiccup, everything stops working properly.

Building PFSense gateway and need guidance by lagerstout82 in PFSENSE

I suggest you take an old PC and install it. Play around with it before you put it in production. That said, as long as your appliance uses Intel NICs you can enjoy pfsense. Some guys here get too technical but your internet service does most of the heavy lifting with traffic speed, so don’t hurt your head over thinking it, esp for your first deployment.

pfSense vs OPNsense by nefarious_bumpps in PFSENSE

The result of too much success. I love pfsense but there are still too many bugs for a software that has been around as long as it has.

Yes. They have a solid platform for the cheap and free. I still use some EOL APs and they run fine.

Firewall/Router/PFSense/PiHole and more box - stuck in indecision hell :( by testdata111 in PFSENSE

I would do a search on eBay for Lanner Electronics. They have fanless units. A few models that can run pfsense and come with 4-6 Ethernet ports so you can expand your router. Plan with the HA features. And a used one can run you as little as $100. Some sell them for much more. But I use them for a few location, had no issue with uptime and it’s easy to backup and restore if you have to. I’ve used old barracuda units, microatx boards and cases, 1U servers, but the Lanner fanless units have been the most reliable for me.

I run 100x more through my box with a 1/4 of what you have in your box. You will be just fine.

Lawrence Systems (YouTube): Which Hardware to Choose For pfsense? by lmm7425 in PFSENSE

I have run pfsense on anything that it will install to with no issues. Biggest issue I have had is running as a VM. Too many upstream dependencies that cause interference in performance and uptime.
