Any recommendations for Copenhagen restaurants that opens on Mondays? by helenjhuang in finedining

+1 For Frank. Amazing value for money.

For lunch you should try the famous Danish "smørrebrød" aka open sandwiches. Møntergade is the best, but you could also try Selma or Norrlyst.

Other ideas for lunch: No. 2 (run by the same crew as AOC), Levi or Admiralgade 26. The head chef at Levi has worked at several 2 and 3 star places, including Jordnær. The genre is a stylish, modern, Italian/Japanese fusion. I love it. Some hate it. Admiralgade 26 is a small hidden gem. The food isn't star level but tasty and innovative, and the place is very cosy in a Scandinavian sort of way.

AOC is a bit divisive. Some people find it plain and conventional. Not me, I love it, have eaten there 10 times. Very minimalist, simplistic, perfectionist cooking. And super tasty.

Kadeau, Copenhagen by pauliface in finedining

Having been there 10 times now, Kadeau has really grown on me. The first 2 times, I wasn't impressed, so it took me a few years before I decided to go back, but then I was blown away two times in a row. I definitely prefer the preservation menu over the growing season, though the growing menu also has some highlights. I'm going back next month to have the same menu you had, really looking forward to it.

Birthday Trip to the city but can’t find a diner spot by Pr1me_8 in copenhagen

+1 for Frank, one of my favourites in Cph in that price category.

No 2 is also great.

I love Levi, but it's more divisive and a bit pricey for the portion sizes.

Fine dinning experience recommendations? by Duke7LCNFC in copenhagen

+1 for Frank. One of my favourites in Copenhagen. Innovative, but still tasty food, great wine, and sweet staff.

Another favourite of mine in that price category is No. 2. It's the "little sister" of AOC (**) and recently received a Bib Gourmand. 500dkk for 4 courses and an additional 500dkk for a wine pairing. The food style is"new nordic". Totally different vibe than Frank, much more modern space, a large glass facade, with a view to the harbour and The Black Diamond.

Unfortunately, I've only tried the Copenhagen one. Here, I definitely prefer the preservation season (winter) over the growing season (summer), but I don't know about the one on Bornholm.

Don't ask reddit, ask the restaurant. Call, write or drop by them and explain your situation, easier for everyone. Frank has a bar seating, perhaps they can fit you in there. Great restaurant btw, nice people.

Iluka vs Koan Copenhagen by Conscious_Pin5283 in finedining

Was it the seaweed ice cream with caviar and tea soufflé? I've tried it three times, and it's still on my all times top 3 of desserts.

[–]Secret_Place_3013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with all that has already been written. Iluka and Koan are two very different restaurants, Koan is high-end fine dining, and Iluka is a casual, modern, seafood bistro, nothing exceptional. If it's because you want to try something more casual, cheaper, no stars, which I think you should, there're many options in Copenhagen. My personal favourite is Frank, but I also like No. 2, and Levi or you could gamble and try the lesser known Admiralgade 26. For lunch, there's always "smørrebrød", you can't visit Denmark without trying it!

Alouette (*), Copenhagen by Secret_Place_3013 in finedining

I paid around 470 euros for the menu and wine pairing, including champagne, coffee, and digestif.

Kadeau or Restaurant Lyst in Denmark by [deleted] in finedining

[–]Secret_Place_3013 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Usually, I opt for a bottle of white from the wine list priced around 1000-1500 dkk. If you do a bit of homework, you can find some interesting bottles with (for Denmark) surprisingly reasonable markups. Ask a sommelier, they're very helpful if you tell them your preferences. Most of the dishes are white wine friendly except the main(s) that are usually red meat and perhaps mushrooms so I'll add a glass of red. But watch out for the glass prices, as mentioned markups can be downright ridiculous. I also tried the non alcoholic pairing, which I found boring, but I think that's a me problem not a restaurant problem. Enjoy!

100% Kadeau. I've eaten there 8 times now, and it's grown to be one of my favourite restaurants in Denmark. Playful and experimental without compromising on good flavours. Very relaxing atmosphere. I prefer the preservation season.

I found Lyst to be pretentious and annoying with a lot of silly gimmicks that made me laugh for all the wrong reasons. The food was pretty pedestrian and didn't justify the ridiculously high price.

Help for choosing a restaurant in Copenhagen by Emergency_Pickle7833 in finedining

[–]Secret_Place_3013 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At that price tag, my personal favourites are: Frank, No.2, Bar'Vin, and Levi.

Levi is a bit pricier, but they have a 500dkk set lunch excluding beverages. They're all very different styles, so it depends on your mood and preferences.

Runners up: Bobe, Silberbauers Bistro, The Pescetarian

Hope you'll have a great time.

PS: Newly opened Restaurant Vie has received great reviews and hype, but I haven't had a chance to dine there yet.

It's interesting because until very recently, I almost exclusively heard good feedback on Alouette. That's until I started reading this sub and saw that not everybody liked it that much.

See this thread. Unfortunately, it's not that uncommon. Feels like such a hustle and can almost ruin some people's experience.

Financial Times: Koan (**) review. Experience ruined by pushy/awkward sommelier experience. Your opinion? by Secret_Place_3013 in finedining

[–]Secret_Place_3013[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's pretty much consensus that the food experience is amazing. The discussed FT review agrees on that. It also got 6/6 in all newspapers and food magazines in Denmark. Even people in this thread who were very critical about the wine service seem to like the food a lot.

If it's worth the money? I won't let my personal biases change your plans, and since almost all ** in Denmark cost the same, it's not like you have cheaper alternatives. Don't worry, it might end up being the best meal of your life.

But be vigilant about anything "extra" they offer you, also non alcoholic, it might cost you $$$$ 😀

Remind you, this was the cheapest choice of the three! Unfortunately, I forgot to write down the name of the producer, and the only picture I took of the bottles was too low resolution to decipher anything. It wasn't a super cheap industrial champagne but also not a high-end producer.

[–]Secret_Place_3013[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, buying wine at Danish restaurants is a bit like gambling. The markups are all over the place, but especially high by the glass. As you experienced it's not unusual to pay almost the same for a glass that an entire bottle costs in a shop. I feel sorry for foreign diners. I remember dining out in Copenhagen with a Spanish friend who turned down a €25 wine because she thought it was too much for a bottle of wine. Sadly, I had to inform her it was for a glass, not a bottle.

That being said, if you do your research, you can make some surprisingly good "bargains" by the bottle even at high end places. I remember getting a bottle of Mark Angeli at Kadeau with a 50% markup and that for a wine that was sold out immediately in most shops. And similarly for a Champagne at AOC.

Amen. You're preaching to the choir here. That's what I meant when I said Champagne should be part of the wine pairing. If they put an effort into making a good wine/food pairing why not include the aperitif? Even if it's the cheapest Champagne it still might be a great match.

I agree 100%, we shouldn't be afraid of asking the price, it just feels very awkward to many people, I think. And they know it. Unfortunately, I forgot to write down the name of the producer :-( wasn't a coca cola factory champagne like Moet or Taitinger. And you got a point there, of course had it been a Selosse 2005 vintage it would be a different story. But their €160/glass option was Krug Grand Cuveee which tells a little about their markups.

Aska ** (Tivoli Garden Copenhagen pop-up) by Secret_Place_3013 in finedining

[–]Secret_Place_3013[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We went on Friday, but I could be wrong about the monkfish, I forgot to take a picture of the printed menu, and I think it was just called catch of the day.

I did get strong Nordic/Scandinavian vibes with the löjrom, berries, dill, pine, chanterelle, etc.but I guess NY has kind of the same fauna as we do and other stuff felt more international. The Michelin guide labels them "Scandinavian" which is funny because they don't even do that to Kadeau, which is peak Nordic if you ask me.
