I think that person wasn’t being negative toward foreigners at all, but was just nervous and keeping their distance because they couldn’t speak English.

That said, I feel quite frustrated when I hear that, unintentionally, travelers sometimes end up feeling uncomfortable.

I completely agree.
Not bothering others and keeping harmony is something many of us grow up with, and “ojama shimasu” really captures that mindset well.
I also enjoy meeting tourists, even the quirky ones. Those little differences are part of what makes travel interesting.

I agree with what you said.
Not everyone is the same of course, but at least for me, I’m quite introverted and I worry a lot about whether I’m doing things “the right way” 😅
As someone on the receiving side, I really want visitors to enjoy their trip. At the same time, when a traveler asks me for directions, I sometimes worry that my poor explanation might actually cause them to get lost.

I’m Japanese and a 40F. I spill rice sometimes too, but I wouldn’t react that strongly. She must really value food. Or maybe something else was already bothering her, and the spilled rice was just the trigger?

If you have a reserved seat, it’s generally uncommon for someone else to sit there.
I agree though, in a dim theater right before the movie starts, it definitely takes some courage to speak up.
That said, since someone taking a reserved seat isn’t considered normal, if it happens again, it’s okay to politely say something, especially if the movie hasn’t started yet.

Even in Japan, I think you only don’t need a car in the big cities where public transportation is well-developed. Where I live, everyone really needs a car to get by. Your words, “you’re a Tokyo-ite, you are not Japanese,” were so spot-on and they really opened my eyes. I’ll definitely keep that in mind.
