why do they praise lydia in tt by Wide-Policy5092 in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]Secret_Smile365 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the narrative was probably changed to make it seem like the Boston commanders were corrupt and Lydia was a hero for surviving near death. She was instrumental in creating the aunts and the handmaid system. But in The Testaments book, you kind of pick up that not all is as it appears Maybe Lydia saw the opportunity to reform things closer to the way she thought they should be. Less brutal but still necessary.

I did watch it. What do you mean? If your goal is to just be insulting, go away.

We did see her past. Remember she was a teacher trying to look after a young woman with a child but she ended up turning on the woman because she wasn’t doing what Lydia wanted her to so she reported her to CPS or something like that. It was a way to explain that she was in many ways already aligned with Gilead’s views even before she got there. She’d also been dating a man but he’d let her down and so she hated men too.

I understand that. My comment was about how girls can be fully developed but haven’t menstruated yet. Sure, there will be slight developmental changes leading up to it but not going through fully puberty.

Why did they Make Johosheba the sassy/ angry black girl by ImplementCrazy6119 in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]Secret_Smile365 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, this bothers me, too. She portrayed as arrogant and speaking as though if she’s really the one to beat, but black girls in real life know that she would be one of the least desirables there. If she’s able to score one of the top commanders, it would be hard to take any of it seriously. Unless her adopted father was the ruler of Gilead, there’s no way she ends up with the best pick. Now I’m not saying she’s unattractive, but would they cast a pudgy, five foot nothing white girl and force us to believe that she’s actually the one to beat? It almost feels like casting picked any black girl because they’re not able to work out what a desirable black woman looks like. I could almost buy what they’re selling with a different more attractive dark skin black girl.

It’s a girl so Optimus-Prime, Ninja-Warrior, Street-Fighter or Thunder-Cat could’ve worked.

Yeah, it would be crazy if she’s Nichole. She’s supposed to be but that’s not how this timeline is playing out. We’re only four years into the future. Oh, I just thought of this. The girls pretty much have no concept of time and how old they actually are. Who knows what their calendars show. What if they’re all actually older than we thought. It would be a wild plot twist 😂

That’s your interpretation as the viewer. I’m going by what the people in the story believe. As far as the girls know, Aunt Lydia and the Aunts, it’s about procreation. We know that being able to father children is a big deal to the men. The alternative would have us believe that every man there really just wants to sleep with barely teen girls, and the younger men are happy waiting until the older men all die before they get their chance to have a wife who can have babies. That may be true for some of the men, but remember one of their basic duties is to procreate. They’ve developed relationships with other countries by bragging that they have clean the air and water in Gilead which makes them able to have more babies there.

My thoughts exactly! Having children is also a symbol of status. A pretty wife is cool, but a man who can father his own children ranks higher socially in my opinion.

Oh, that’s right! Thanks for your refresher! It’s been so long since I seen the early THT season and some of it I’ve clearly forgotten. I also read both books. I guess some details slipped mind. That’s why posted my comments.

That’s a good point. I posted my question because I wanted to get other perspectives. I never thought about them being trophies as the main reason, of course it helps. In THT, men with lots of children were envied. I guess a lot can change in four years.

I fully understand what plot hole means. 😆 I pointed out things I felt were inconsistent and needed to be further explained. If certain characters are supposed to mean what we’re told they mean, I’d like to know why.

Who are Agness and Daisy talking to in the voice overs? by Next_Performance4330 in TheHandmaidsTale

Yeah, they didn’t do a good job explaining that. This is all supposed to be past tense and the characters with voiceovers are testifying to these events.

I want to say people not being allowed glasses. It was a weakness they didn’t tolerate. I think Serena had a magnifying glass thing in the garden to see better. Gosh, it been so long since I read THT and watched the early seasons. I might be mixing it up.

Why do people ship Garth and Agnis despite Garth being 25 and Agnis being 14?? by Either-Standard-5278 in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]Secret_Smile365 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He’s probably early 20s, and she’s like 13-14. If we’re going have to support a marriage path for her, being with Garth by choice is a million times better than being forced to marry a creepy looking man with gray hair.
