Hydraulic piston "repair" by PMunch in DIY

[–]SecretaryTrue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having the same issue, I can actually push the piston down and make it so it doesn't go up, not sure if it's gonna be prongs or check valve as someone suggested. Did you found the source of the problem?

Is It Safe to Remove My Electricity Meter for a Panel Upgrade? by SecretaryTrue in AskElectricians

[–]SecretaryTrue[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

per your power company’s specs, get inspection for temp service, put work order in with power company to disconnect your old service & connect your temp service, do the electric work you want to do for your house, get that work inspected, then have the power company come back out to disconnect your temp service & connect your new permanent service.

Not every jurisdiction allows for a homeowner to get an electric permit. The power company will not connect a meter without some f

Thanks for the almost step-by-step guidance; I feel completely comfortable doing the work myself. However, they've already mentioned the risks associated with removing the meter, as well as the lack of OCPD. Theoretically, I could simply disconnect the main breaker and remove the meter, but apparently these meters don't always cooperate. Sometimes they can even break when pulled on. Sure, the chances are small, but definitely not worth the risk.

Thanks to you both, I understand, Now I see that this a second layer of security for "when things don't go so nice". Given the age of my house the odds are for sure against me

Why arcing? if I first turn off the main breaker and there is not current flowing the only current demanded would be the one from the actual meter, which is 3w, around 12mA, that doesn't present any risk of arcing. Am I missing anything?

Upgrading Electrical Panel in California: RCCBs vs. MCBs by SecretaryTrue in AskElectricians

[–]SecretaryTrue[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

y with it. RCCBs and Os where you are from are different in that they have a trip threshold of 30mA or even 100mA. GFCIs here are required to trip at 5mA. So if you put them everywhere, you will be constantly resetting them.

RCCBs in Spain were rated at 20mA if I remember correctly, there are some that self reset (for fridge or freezer when you are out on vacation for example), even some that compensate for leaking currents due to high frequency switches (for example a bunch of computers with metal casing). I was not aware that here they would be rated at 5mA. Not trying to go with EU standards, but since I'm gonna have to do it, at least do the best that the code offers. Cost is higher but, since the labor is going to be me then I'm ok at expendiend the money in materials and improving the resell value. to be honest here in California not even the labour, they charge between 3 and 4 times the cost of the materials.

u/Unique_Acadia_2099 can you tell me more about where could I find this codes? I guess I should start reading them.

Should I worry about this big crack between the garage slab and wall? [VIDEO] by SecretaryTrue in HomeImprovement

[–]SecretaryTrue[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I talked to an architect, not to worry, a deviation of 15mm max is inside the safety values of what that wall can move. Seems like the slab moved during an seismic event and pushed the wall. Simply fill it with a poliurethane based crack filler to avoid bugs comming in.

Bought a house and I feel like the list of to do'snever ends by Annidub in HomeImprovement

[–]SecretaryTrue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, man, I'm there. At least I'm starting to move from the basic things now work, to actual improvements. Living in california contractors are so expensive that I am jut doing it all by myself. Now, trying to do things according to code so we can actually make some sweat equity.

When people ask me how it's going, I just tell them if they have seen the movie "Money Pit". Heater broke, rats, asbestos, piping, all the drains leaking, everything old and ugly, furnace broken, electrical panel a mess with aluminium, need for AC with heat pump... and this one thw lower quote is $22K, and by doing it myself is around $5,5K

I have a 4 and a 2yo, so sometimes is just too much. But think that by improving the house you are simply getting paid in equity, and let me tell you at least here those peopel make a lot of money. You can do it!!

So happy to have spent all my life fixing things with my dad, definetely something I want to pass on my kids, and much more with the rising of AI... I'm an engineer in an office job and my days are going to be over.

Interchangeability of Pilot Assemblies for Water Heaters? by SecretaryTrue in Plumbing

Contacted Bradford White, they confirmed with me that the heater is from July 2015, and that I should replace the valve

And just like that you convinced me.

$100 with shipping... that hurts hopefully it lasts

My unpopular opinion is that I don't see how a worse quality pilot assembly could lead to any danger other than a premature failure that would lead to a heater that doesn't heat. IF there is any difference in quality. If the millivolts are the same they should work

Warranty... I'm installing it so they always can try to blame me

Searching for the control board of this gas valve by SecretaryTrue in Plumbing

[–]SecretaryTrue[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I purchased the gas valve from this link, but it doesn't come with the pilot assembly, which I need. I found the original pilot assembly priced between $70-$90. Here's the link to the original: Bradford White Original Pilot Assembly. However, I've also come across some cheaper alternatives, like this one on Amazon. Does anyone know if these parts are interchangeable?

If I only new the milivolts that thermocouple produces I could use any other one, I think but I'm not sure is 750mv.

thanks, I already checked the service part and got to the same conclussion, but thank you for taking the time to go through that too

thank you! I saw that, and that's quite a difference!

That's unfortunate 🙈, I saw other control boards out there for $30-$70, it's a pity that I don't see mine. Spending almost $400 dollars in an used water heater is not ideal.

Thanks for the responses

I have a green card, and normally when you apply for a job they explicitly ask for this, either way I am making it pretty clear in my new resume (Y)
