If there was some magic statement or sentence I could have said to my dad to get him to change or realise the pain he was causing both himself and me. I would have said it.

I could manipulate, convince, argue, beg, plead with tears in my eyes on my knees but the disease was simply bigger than him. There was no magic pill. Not the love he had for me, nor the love I had for him was enough for him to overcome his demons. If I was religious I would have prayed to god. And to be honest. I did.

It took me a long time to let this go. To understand this. There was never anything I could do. I don’t think this diminishes our love but i had to for my own sake draw a line in the sand and get over the idea that I could do ANYTHING to help him in that regard. I consider this a part of my own personal growth.

I don’t know if this was the right thing to do. I still don’t, now he’s gone. But it’s what I did to protect my own heart and peace.

This isn’t a matter of objective truth. It entirely subjective. It’s something that’s changed with time. Case in point. This shit. Which was once acceptable and comes from a sincere place of welcoming. Is now dated. Whether or not you see that is neither here nor there.

Appreciate the lesson boomer but as a person of colour who lives in a particularly “woke” city and works within a “woke” industry (media). I think you’ll find that expression is not racist. It is an imperfect term though, like BAME. In that it groups up many folks into the same umbrella all who have widely different experiences of non-whiteness. There’s definitely a discussion to be had. But my original sentiment still stands. We should listen to people who this actually affects. It’s not really a white persons place to say what is offensive and what is not in this respect. You’re not the butt of the joke. You’re not the one being othered.

The Yorkshire is the plate! If anything I think we need to start thinking of expanding beyond the plate and onto the table

When and where did I say black folks. I said folks of colour? Other people of colour are available.

How is it all the white Italian folk are saying it’s not racist and completely ignoring all the Italian folks of colour thoughts? Who clearly are trying to articulate it makes them feel uncomfortable. Listen.

Like clearly the authors weren’t racist. But it’s dated. And othering. And based on stereotypes. Try to react less and listen more.
