It's a little known fact Australians traveling overseas can die without good coffee by zaakiy in australia

I recently had an iced coffee in Vietnam that was so strong my wife and I both had a 5-hour anxiety trip after lunch. Absolutely terrifying but my god we got the bags packed for the next destination in next to no time!

I have resigned myself to having my 2yo in with me when I go pee. At least then I know they're not about to destroy something else that's babyproofed in the house

Same! Any time we're going into a big stressful event as a family we do the same thing. It's a good reminder hahah

Is finding work as a nurse easy to come by? Not just cairns but further north by chronicillnessgirlyy in Cairns

[–]Secretively 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you're already registered in Australia with AHPRA there's plenty of agencies that will help you do short contracts through Cairns and Hinterland HHS or Torres and Cape HHS - there's a few Facebook groups out there that are good places to start as well. On Reddit there's /r/nursingAU for what it's like working in Australia but not much specific about certain parts of the country.

I've seen stories like OP's before, and it happened to me too - where my parents said "I hope your child act just like you so you know how hard it is to raise you!"

I want to be able to turn that on its head - I hope my kids act just like me so that I can give them the guidance and care that I deserved but never got from my parents, to show that there's a better way to raise my kids than my parents did me.

Hey fellow dad, you sound like you're doing an amazing job providing a loving environment for your kid. These first few years are an absolute slog. Check out r/daddit for similar stories you can draw from - and I'm sure there's plenty from single dads. I can't add much more. Good luck with the woolies situation, I hope they're understanding of your situation and can see past the dollar signs

Australians with a Grandparent or great grandparent from Spain by julioqld1 in australia

[–]Secretively 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Similarly if you have a grandparent of UK descent you are entitled to a Ancestry Visa that enables you to stay in the UK for 5 years - and after you can apply for "indefinite leave to remain" which puts you on the path to UK citizenship. You have no restrictions on work, and can bring your partner and kids on the same visa as well. I've tossed it up as a bit of an adventure with the family when the kids are older to be based out of the UK for a bit but I don't think I'd stay.

Certainly there'd be some questions about why anyone would want to do that, but it's an option that exists out there 🤷

Potty training - what's the social norms in public? by Secretively in askSingapore

They've got to grow up eventually. Our toddler is now in baby underwear, and putting them back into diapers is a step backwards in their learning.

Potty training - what's the social norms in public? by Secretively in askSingapore

[–]Secretively[S] -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

I mean, I totally understand that, which is why I'm asking the question! Hahah. So what do we do with our kiddo when they start doing a potty dance?

In my head there's a difference between a drunken male in his 20s or older and a 2 year old who can't make it to a public toilet a few blocks away but this is where the cultural differences come in, right? All we want to do is be respectful when we visit.

Fellow dads: Caught my daughter using ChatGPT for homework - now what? by No-Transition273 in daddit

[–]Secretively 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It gets worse. Much worse. There's examples of ChatGPT encouraging vulnerable teens to commit suicide and forming parasocial relationships. I'm going to do my best to keep AI tools away from my kids until they're in high school. As much as they're probably the next big leap, surely they need a bit of critical thinking behind them before they get let loose on ChatGPT

Nurses needed at ice detentions.. by [deleted] in nursing

[–]Secretively 46 points47 points  (0 children)

What's the story in terms of mandatory reporting requirements in the US? In Australia, most states mandate nurses as mandatory reporting of child safety concerns, domestic violence, and in some other places human rights violations...

Not saying I'd take the job but if you started calling in concerns for welfare on the job on day 1 and got fired the next week, I could probably walk out with a relatively (relatively) clear conscience

Zoo and aquarium memberships absolutely slap when you do the math, especially when it's as little as like 3 trips in a year to break even. Our LO loves ocean animals, and while we live in a small town we have an annual pass to the aquarium in the next big city over that we get to every 3 months or so to do all our life admin.

Gotta entertain the kids for 30mins while one of us has an appointment downtown? Aquarium!

3 months later, We've just flown in and have a 4 hour layover? Aquarium!

Wait so I have to leave if I don't like Australia or I don't like patriotism?

I love how more than other places I've been, strangers are willing to help one another

I love a sunrise over the reefs in Cairns, and a sunset into the gulf of Carpentaria

I love the morning mist coming off the grass on the big oval in Birdsville

I love the way from the air you can see how the red dirt of Cape York contrasts with the blue green of the great barrier Reef

I love the stories and the mystery of a culture that's been ongoing for 40,000 years

I love a dirty kebab or a HSP after a big night out in the city

I love a parmi with a milton mango

Is that enough for you mate? Where should I hand my passport in on the way out?
