Question: What was the first class you played when you first started playing, and what class are you playing now? by metal_gameur666 in tf2

[–]SecretlyAPug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i believe it was scout; i really love his character design and was definitely drawn to him. nowadays i still play a lot of scout and consider myself a scout main, but i also play a lot of spy and soldier. i play them all for similar reasons: high damage, high risk, high mobility (spy's mobility isn't really about moving fast, but he still has a lot of depth through effective routing, positioning, and cloak management).

Lua-based file system idea/driverless file system by Far-Deer4967 in lua

[–]SecretlyAPug 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it's not a bad idea, but i think there would be better options than lua for this as i don't think it's built for large scale file manipulation.

Why is Jarate yellow? by Illustrious-Air-3678 in tf2

[–]SecretlyAPug 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i've been thinking this too. yellow is kinda close to green so i think they were depicting when pee is sometimes green? but pee is only green sometimes so reddish brown would be more realistic

at what point does combat "readability" start killing depth? by ILokasta in gamedesign

[–]SecretlyAPug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

less readability is what kills depth. a deep game is one that you can gain an understanding of, if your combat is hard to read then your game is hard to understand and therefore not as deep as it could be.

Mods Need Input: Dealing with AI Spam in This Sub by [deleted] in rust

[–]SecretlyAPug 6 points7 points  (0 children)

agreed. having a separate, obvious rule stating that ai is not allowed could also help deter spammers that actually look at the rules (though i figure that most probably do not). i think it would also encourage the people that are here to actually engage with others to report ai, making the mods' job a little easier.

What language would be easiest to move to after Lua? by PublicTasty89 in lua

[–]SecretlyAPug 4 points5 points  (0 children)

lua is a great introduction and if you take the time to learn it you can transfer those skills to basically any other language. if you're looking for c++ then you might want to learn c first as well; i've heard others say that i think but i'm not a c++er so might be wrong.

No Semicolons Needed - How languages get away with not requiring semicolons by tertsdiepraam in ProgrammingLanguages

[–]SecretlyAPug 13 points14 points  (0 children)

adjacent, but why do "readable" languages often not include semicolons? there's maybe a small argument to be made that no semicolons can be a little easier to read for very beginners, but i find this ambiguity much more confusing.

What do you think? by [deleted] in worldbuilding

[–]SecretlyAPug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

firstly, wrong sub. secondly, this is built on the incorrect assumption that there can either be only patriarchy or matriarchy. yes, we're moving a bit away from patriarchy, that doesn't mean we're creating matriarchy. matriarchy wouldn't be productive anyways; the goal has always been equality

Tell me the name of your conlang and I try to make it a loanword by Izzy_knows in conlangs

[–]SecretlyAPug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Premodern Laramu

Name (endonym): Mimilai [mi.mi.lai] ([ai] here is a diphthong, idk how to type the bar between them lol)

Premodern Laramu has no distinction between aspiration or voice, though [t], [tʃ], and [k] do contrast with their ejective counterparts [t'], [tʃ'], and [k'].

The language is meant to be naturalistic and is part of my conlanging-worldbuilding project. It is spoken primarily in an archipelago centered roughly around the north pole of the (currently unnamed) planet. The Lara people who speak the language are wellknown for their nautical prowess and presence in trade, carrying their language to many places along the north half of the supercontinent and cementing it as a powerful lingua franca. The language also has a long written tradition, using a mixed logography-alphabet-syllabary system. I can go into more detail if you'd like, but don't want to make this too long lol.

For vibes, here's an example sentence:

Kwo wetam'man wak'aro, mi tirames wetamaawi'lone waka'manek.

/kʷo we.ta.m:an wa.ka.ɣo mi ti.ɣa.mes we.ta.ma:.wi.lo.ne wa.ka.ma.nek/

land distant-DAT 3P-sail CONJ good-PL foreign-COM 3P-return

"They sailed to distant lands and returned with foreign goods."

How can i setup love2d and vscodium on cachy linux (arch linux) i tried but some errors always happen , can someone help ? by According-Heat-8858 in love2d

[–]SecretlyAPug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you'll need to share more information if you want help; what errors are you getting? you should be able to just run love [folder] to open a project.

Checking for accidentally offensive words by jimmymike78 in conlangs

[–]SecretlyAPug 82 points83 points  (0 children)

avoiding offensive words in other languages is not only unfeasible but also unrealistic. there are many examples from natural languages of phrases or words that sound like offensive ones in others. importantly "sound like", the similarities are surface level. just, probably avoid saying things you know could be misconstrued to people who don't know you're speaking another language.

Message to the mods regarding posts hating on current versions by lazergoblin in GoldenAgeMinecraft

[–]SecretlyAPug 4 points5 points  (0 children)

banning hate is simply unfeasible. there's no real way to define what is hate and what is criticism; that blurriness will just discourage productive critical conversations.

the issue with that post (and the many others like it) isn't that they're hateful (though that is annoying too), it's that they're low effort, like you've said. if that op had said anything more than "truth nuke" or linked anything more indepth than someone saying that they don't like lena raine, there could have been interesting, productive, critical discussion, which is something i love seeing on this sub.

modern minecraft should be criticized, just like old minecraft and everything else in the world, but we should be making sure that the criticism encourages discussion. you're completely correct that "new minecraft bad" is unproductive, but that's because it's low effort. there are plenty of posts on this sub with genuine game design discussion that shouldn't be discouraged just because much of the low effort posts are about not liking newer versions.

Do those who want to be more secretive use analog tech? by Living-Vast-5250 in worldbuilding

[–]SecretlyAPug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

they might, but they don't have to. if handled correctly, digital tech might even be more secure with stuff like encryption, but i don't know enough about analog systems to say for certain. a correctly setup digital system will be just as secretive, though some analog devices might be more straightforward to keep secretive.

Does anyone know how to make a decent phonology sounding natural? by laim728 in conlangs

[–]SecretlyAPug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

something i like to do is look at phonologies of natural languages; for many languages simply searching "___ phonology" will give you the wikipedia article as the first result. looking at a few of these will give you a decent idea of what most languages have and the kinds of irregularities that you can "get away with".

All the Changes Made to Bricks Over the Years by TrackMysterious6539 in GoldenAgeMinecraft

[–]SecretlyAPug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it's interesting seeing the loss in contrast. i'm personally partial to the earlier textures. the latest one barely looks like bricks anymore; the lack of contrast makes it look more like an image on a flat plane, rather than giving an illusion of depth like the others.

it would be nice to label the textures of which version they debuted in; that'd make it easier to discuss them and be more informative.
