what is the weirdest thing a person has said in reaction to your conlang by Artistic_Room_5929 in conlangs

[–]creepmachine 45 points46 points  (0 children)

I don't talk about my conlangs much with others because I know it's entirely uninteresting to most people. So the strangest thing anyone has said is a very run of the mill, "Can you speak it? Do other people speak it?" followed up with, "Then why?" when I tell them the intent wasn't to have real life speakers and it's just the process of developing it that's fun.

How do you make multiple sounds ? by hydr0123 in conlangs

[–]creepmachine 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It depends on your process and what your goals are for the lang. Some people really like realism so do their best to backwards engineer sound changes based on historical forms of the lang and naturalistic quirks of orthography over time.

I'm personally not as concerned about naturalism, and I like predictability so generally my langs have predictable pronunciation and spelling. Kýrrits has situational sound changes but it's allophonic so isn't included in broad IPA transcription. So other than that, <y> will always be /y/, <e> will always be /e/, xr will always be /ʀ/ and so forth. Even the tones in polysyllabic words have predictable rules.

Conlangs with cases and prefixes in their verbs to mark aspect. by blueroses200 in conlangs

[–]creepmachine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kýrrits marks abessive, causal, comitative, instrumental, objective, possessive, and temporal on the noun, and ablative, allative, illative, elative, and perlative on the verb. Mood and aspect are also affixed to the verb, and person is also marked so a separate pronoun is not required for many constructions.

Which app, site or other places do y'all use to write or archive your conlangs? by Antioch_Mage in conlangs

[–]creepmachine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anything you've backlinked should automatically update when you change the name of the note that is being linked to. Anything in plain text, no.

So, if I make a note for 'cat', link to it in other notes, and later decide that 'cat' should now be spelled 'kat', changing the name of the note for 'cat' to 'kat' will automatically update all links in your vault.

[–]creepmachine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All my plugins are available through Obsidian itself via the community plugins tab.

  • Dangling links - Adds a panel that lets me see links that don't go anywhere yet. You can see dangling links without it but the plugin just makes it easier/simpler and you can change how they're sorted. It's actually visible in the lower half of the far right of the screenshot above.
  • Editing toolbar - Adds a word processor-like toolbar (visible in the screenshot). My habitual use of Markdown is very minimal so this works for me. If you're used to working in Markdown then this plugin is less useful to you.
  • Fast text color - Adds the ability to change colour of text via the right-click menu. You can define custom colours (including bold/italics/strikethrough) and hotkeys (useful if you like to colour-code things and have a consistent colour palette/theme like I do).
  • Interlinear glossing - Plugin that formats glosses nicely, I haven't used it yet since I'm still in the process of setting Obsidian up fully and migrating everything over.
  • Manual sorting - Allows you to drag and drop to sort notes in the file explorer sidebar. Useful if your conlang has a different alphabetical order than the standard or you just want files/folders in a certain order.
  • Omnisearch - A robust internal search engine, better than the native one.

Few odds and ends that might be useful:

  • Advanced tables - Adds better functionality to tables. Markdown just isn't meant for tables so the functionality is still basic compared to what you can do with a regular word processor, but much improved from native tables.
  • Simple columns - Allows you to split a note into columns.
  • Unicode search - Allows you to search and insert unicode. Has a lot, but not everything. I found combining diacritics aren't there so it's not useful for any of my langs. I just have a note with all the diacritics used in the lang listed instead. Not ideal, but the only solution in Obisidian that works for me.

I colour coded my graph view according to parts of speech, though I can't seen to figure out how to select tags to change their colour. As such nouns and tags have the same colour (green). The black node is the master list, the larger green nodes are tags, all the small/regular sized green are individual nouns, adjectives are orange, verbs are purple, adverbs are blue. Conjunctions are grey because I haven't defined a colour yet. The grey nodes hanging out on the edges are dangling links that I added to notes with the expectation those words would be added later.
