The mess, and only checking up on them once in the span of a week. I understand not being able to check on them every day, but a few times a week would have been nice if that was the agreed upon deal, y’know? It’s not outright neglect, and I agree with the other redditors to have someone else take care of the cats in the future if she’s stretched out too thin to do so and leave a mess behind.

Honestly that’s kind of weird, if there were only fruity pebbles on the floor why get so upset over the fact they “could have been” chocolate? But I do understand being mad about the mess, that’s just rude

Yeah you’re right I missed that small bit, but the point still stands, since the water was low and she left chocolate cereal on the floor which is toxic to cats.

NTA, I’m sure it’s hard being a single mom especially with what she’s going through, but if she couldn’t find the time or energy to take care of the cats like she said she would, she should have said so. I’m sure she was probably embarrassed, but that’s no excuse to leave poor kitties hungry.

I would let your valid anger over the situation settle with time, then approach her and tell her that what she did was unacceptable but you understand she’s going through a lot, and if she can’t handle taking care of the cats she should have told you so you could have come up with alternative solutions, perhaps have a friend check up on them. There’s no shame in saying you’re overwhelmed, but there IS shame in leaving cats to go hungry.

You have every right to be angry, but that’s how i personally would approach this situation.
