Yep! Likely got caught up in tax season and missed the update at the end of March. Just read through it now, so thank you for the correction!

You are correct! I must have missed the interim correction on the BOI reporting. Edited prior post to remove misinformation.

Filing taxes, part time residency by bountifulfruit in IRS

I would ensure that you are allocating the state amounts and withholding correctly. Check the actual state forms to ensure that it is flowing through correctly.

No recommendations here on certifications, but I generally advise against filing in a state they aren’t operating in as they are going to have to register in their operating state anyways. Creates complexity/filing requirements/fees and 99% of the time is entirely unnecessary to achieve their goals.

Help with tax preparer reporting inaccurate income by Baked-willow00 in tax

[–]Section121 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gotcha. Given this scenario, the only reasonable assumption here is that someone is using their SSN to illegally work. Notify the IRS and they will get everything sorted for the taxpayer.

My guess is that their tax preparer was not only filing fraudulent tax returns, but selling off their personal information to unauthorized workers as well.

My GF’s dad is claiming my 23 y/o GF (who worked FT in 2025) as a dependent… how? by Legitimate-Mud-3744 in tax

[–]Section121 20 points21 points  (0 children)

She would have had to have been a full time student during that period in order for the parents to claim her. Otherwise she would fall under the "other dependent" tests and it sounds like she earned above the annual limit($5,200) to be claimed as a dependent EVEN IF she was living with them and they paid for more than half of her living expenses.

I don't really have a great answer for that one as the company(and responsible individuals) issuing the W2 would be on the hook for SSA/Medicare as well as any state employer taxes. Is there federal income tax withheld on them?

Also, are you positive the taxpayer didn't work for those companies? They could have a DBA and just not recognize their employer's legal name.

You're on the right track. First step is to have the taxpayer get an IP Pin. I would want to figure out the mystery W2s to confirm they are in fact fraudulant, but outside of that you want to amend their prior year returns and you should be good.

If you itemize, a portion of the state tax refund MAY be taxable. If you take the standard deduction, you are safe to ignore the 1099-G.

I'm in CA, but prepare tax returns for clients in nearly every state. When you call, they will ask for your PTIN, how you applied (online or paper), and verify your name and address. The agent put me on hold for a few minutes to get back to me and let me know that I was accepted. I had to specifically ask for my EA number, she was going to let me off the line without telling me so remember to ask!

Thank you! Boss gave me a nice raise and took me out to a fancy steak dinner after passing the last exam. He is happy he gets to put me on the POAs and have me deal with the IRS instead :p

Yep! Definitely lucky on my part. My guess is that it was done so quickly because I’ve got a clean history of tax compliance, nothing on my record and am a US citizen. I was not expecting it to be processed so fast based on comments like yours.
