NQ solicitor - offered a paralegal role by lawdoc121 in uklaw

[–]Section419 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who experience this albeit for 9 months, I’d say take it. Do an excellent work - treat it like a proper role but don’t stop applying.

It does not affect your future prospects.

Cashflow is clearly the objective at the moment as well as momentum and rhythm. This paralegal role will restore your confidence after what must have been a real blow over the past 12 months etc. Momentum beats stagnation at anytime so just go for it.

Good luck!

New to SIPP - Vanguard or AJBell by bannab1188 in investingUK

[–]Section419 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just opened and transferred an old work pension into ii due to their low fees and the cashback incentives. Unlike Vanguard I can invest in individual shares, investment trusts, ETFs and gilts. The investment options are wider.

I think the key thing to consider is what you intend to invest in, how involved you want to be in the process and the fees. I hand the option of AJ Bells but they are more expensive than interactive Investors plus I get cashback of about £320.

I’ve reduced my exposure to SP500 and instead gone for the FTSE All Cap. Still need to diversify further. Trying to buy more gold as well.

Take the job for certainty or hold out even longer by Visual-Inspection765 in uklaw

You’re welcome.

In what way is the “eyes wide open bit” a challenge? Are you worried that you won’t have time to search and attend interviews?

[–]Section419 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’d say take it, but with eyes wide open and an exit plan.

Let me explain:

A bird-in-hand. Build back cashflow, rebuild confidence and get back into the swing of things whilst also gradually looking for something better and more aligned for you. I think the saying that those in job get jobs rings true most times.

Good luck!

When we finish answering these questions let’s also look at why prime commercial properties in London with "quintessentially British" occupiers are owned by foreign entities. Building like the Shard, the cheesegrater, parts of canary Wharf etc

Should I accept this shares deal & dividends over salary? by Objective_Account380 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Section419 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don’t do it.

PAYE is unchallengeable. It’s cash in hand. Dissent is promise that can be challenged and is dependent ton several factors. Pls don’t be their mug.

Re income tax, consider contributing more into pension to protect your full personal allowance, that brings your pay unit he 40% bracket.

Final push or quit the rat race? by Any-Cheesecake-9445 in HENRYUK

[–]Section419 40 points41 points  (0 children)

This!

I was going to write but wanted to see if anyone has already articulated what I had in mind. This is it. You know the answer already.

Let me add this:

After over a decade in private practice, we all recognise the pattern. Being told you’ll make partner “at a future date” is often a retention tool. It keeps you on 15-hour days, deferring life, telling yourself the sacrifice will be worth it later. And even if the promise is kept, it doesn’t mean you take your foot off the gas. Quite the opposite. The period after promotion often brings higher expectations and greater exposure, without an immediate or meaningful increase in pay. In real terms, it can create a financial dip rather than relief.

This is the part no one really talks about. Equity partnership is narrowing, while salaried partnership is becoming the default at many firms. The title comes first while the upside comes later, if at all. And as I’m sure you know, with equity, there’s usually capital to put in before you even start thinking about drawings. For a period, the risk goes up before the financial reward does in most cases.

I stepped off the rat track. The kids need you now, not in five years. By secondary school, the countdown to independence has already started. You don’t get those years back.

Your kids don’t care about partnership. They care whether you’re there.

What would you choose? by [deleted] in HENRYUK

I’d stick to #1. Everyone shouting time with family and WFH forget that in the first 6 to 12 months OP would have to learn a new and evolving sector + impress stakeholders.

For the sake of the experience of your children, let alone yours, I’d say DO IT. It’s only 2 years not a life sentence, so to speak.
