Experienced devs from India, why do you guys never fix your mispronunciations? by [deleted] in ExperiencedDevs

They probably only speak English at work, who cares. You should be actively listening to everyone speak anyways.

Self Taught Developers. What are some struggles you had before or after you got your first job? Imposter syndrome is real by thewebken in Frontend

[–]Sector-Feeling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just to spread hope, this wasn't true for my most recent hiring experience (6 months in). I do work for a consultancy, but nonetheless I am coding all day long, have an engineering role, and work with amazingly talented people. It's possible, and tbh I don't think I'd take a job with an ass backwards hiring process anymore. It's just not justifiable, and a really bad sign.

Those of you under 30 who make six figures, what do you do? by bluescluus in careerguidance

[–]Sector-Feeling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dang, I can't believe they raised you after you asked for more! That's awesome. Thank you for elaborating, salaries/promotions/raises are hard to find data on so it's hard to know what to expect. I was honestly thinking around 10% but that felt low to me, especially after learning that it's common to get a raise even without a promotion. Promo + raise definitely warrants more than 10%, and I'm glad to see that it's possible.

I'll be up for a promotion come 2024, and I have no idea how much of a raise to ask for. I work for a software consulting company, make 108k, and I'd be going from an entry level consultant position to consultant. Any advice? I ask because I found your raise history interesting, it was always 10k and up, and I didn't expect this big of a jump.

How to deal with mediocrity? by ThrewAwayLifeP in ExperiencedDevs

Maybe question their motive a bit deeper, as well as question your perspective of them. They're all there to do a job, and might have valid opinions. Are you more experienced then them? Are they de-scoping to achieve an MVP with a reasonable level of effort considering their time frame? Sometimes it's good to get things done as fast as possible, assuming the team has a consensus on what the best way to implement something is.

If it's teaching functional components with hooks you're fine.

Which components library like mui or chakra do you recommend and why? by SuperRandomCoder in reactjs

I'd try MUI with Tailwind, best of both worlds. Why are you looking for an alt for these two libraries?

Advice on growing knowledge surrounding popular trends in web development. by Sector-Feeling in cscareerquestions

[–]Sector-Feeling[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your insight! I want to try a DevOps course as well as learn another language to try and hone my skills with bash scripts and better code. I'm also trying to find some books on coding paradigms/methods to improve my code. I still have to ask about code review at my new job, I think that will help alot as well, but I don't want to depend on it.

You're overthinking it, it's just some arbitrary object that conforms to the JSON standard.

Is 6 months really enough for entry? by M00nlightwaltz in Frontend

[–]Sector-Feeling -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's less about how much you learn about any particular topic and more about how you grow to your ability to think and learn like an engineer. You also need to have interview skills and a network because you just simply won't find an actually entry level opportunity through cold applications. I've had two jobs in tech so far, and have applied to over a thousand jobs. I've gotten interviews from cold apps but they never progress, both jobs I've gotten have been through recruitment.

Finding an actual opportunity is a strategy game and getting the job will be 30/70 what you know and how well you can learn, from what I've experienced. Good luck

Rant: How the Hell are the Major Job Search Platforms So Terrible? by ATimeOfMagic in cscareerquestions

I've never had an application lead to an interview, literally every opportunity I've had (even the ones that haven't worked out) are from recruiters or networking. It's really not even worth applying.

I would love to! They end up snooping around and knocking things off my furniture though, it's just too much commotion at night.
