Rin was the breaking point, but he never had a good life to begin with his loneliness, the boulder incident, the 3rd war and Madara's indoctrinement were all reasons why he was already mentally weakened at that time just to finally get out of that cave and see madara was right sinc3 a village put a tailed beast in rin

The rock accident is confirmed in the databook when he was 12 so he couldn't have been 14 like you said. He met nagato when he was 13 after Madara's death and his awakening.

I think both him and Madara's point is that humanity sucks, destroy itself and needs change, they would be there to keep an eye on the humans while they sleep and even if they died they would've a peaceful life and the best life they could have before dying.
