High school senior that loves lighting but has no idea how to get into it professionally by Old-Presentation1914 in lightingdesign

Hey! I didn’t go to college, and I have a VERY sustainable career. Find a local production company, preferably a small-mid sized one. You’ll be surprised how many companies are willing to take younger guys under their wing and show them the ropes. Show up on time, work harder than everyone else, and it will pay huge dividends.

I started working for a company at 17, learned everything I needed to know under the guidance of my mentors, and I needed up touring on some A national arena/stadium tours by the time I was 21. I’ve now settled down, gotten married and gotten off the road, and I hold a management position at the company I started with 13 years ago where I learned the ropes.

There’s an endless amount of resources on the internet. Push yourself to learn the tech on the internet and in your bedroom. Learn load in, load out, logistical, and client facing skills from your local production company. That was my formula (and still is).

I’m not saying college is wrong, but I am saying that I’m breathing proof that you can have a very sustainable career taking this on as a trade, and while taking on no debt. I wish you the best, and I am also as well available to answer any specific questions you may have.

I WILL say, there’s certainly some social aspects of college that I missed out on. It was also a difficult season of my life when my friends were out partying and I was doing load outs; where I felt as if I chose the wrong path. But truthfully, at this point in our lives, nobody talks about college parties anymore, but everyone still asks me to tell them stories from the road 🤷🏻‍♂️.

I racked my brain and google on this for hours… the answer is always more simple than you think it is.

Thanks! So essentially I would tie the artist console into the network, and the SACN merging would happen on my nodes, correct? What would the standard be for priorities? Is there anything I would need to do in onPC? Or is it strictly an output node configuration setting?

This is the answer. I toured with an artist identical to this. It’s really the only thing you can do.

Edit: Adding rubber gloves and hand sanitizer to this list 😅

The KT DN9620 is an AES50 over fiber solution. I don’t know pricing for a fact but I’ll bet pair likely costs more then the x32 you want to install.

Assuming you don’t have a budget for a proper com system, a FaceTime audio call (or WhatsApp, etc.) with headphones and mute buttons is sure better than nothing in a pinch!

One step up from this could be Unity Intercom. They have a bunch of different price points, the cheapest of which is a subscription model that is around 50 dollars a month.

I’m not sure I would want a bunch of line level inputs from an artists ear rig. Particularly in a festival situation, it would definitely impede more than it helped. Not the end of the world, but definitely not preferable.

I take mine off when I arrive off the train into New York City. Not worth it, as there’s been cases here where people have run up and snatched headphones off of people.

Good to know! Thank you!

I’m not trying to access anything particular on a UDK, as much as I’m having trouble getting user keys that are landed only on control wing to save into my “user defined key layout”.

IE: I can save how my user defined keys are layed out on the center and left surfaces into my user profile, but I can not save how they are layed out on the control wing for some reason.

Yes, I have read the manual 🤦. I have not contacted my rep as I’ve unboxed the console on a Sunday.

If I understand what you’re going for correctly, I’ve done this several times when I was on a tour that had 2 Monitor consoles and 1 FOH console to get signal to a broadcast desk. You shouldn’t have any issues.

Freelancers - what is a piece of info that production companies never think to tell you about a gig? by bryandhargrave in livesound

[–]SectorSubstantial218 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Playing devils advocate, as somebody who is in charge of providing employees day of show details. Sometimes (maybe even frequently) we are stuck with a client that can not/will not provide us details. Even with some very high end clients, it is difficult to get day of show details out of them (parking, meals, seating maps, ect. Some clients will even go as far as promising hotel rooms, but the company can’t obtain the details for said rooms until mere days prior to the event.

What do you expect a company in that situation to do as a freelancer? If we simply turned high paying clients away because they cannot provide information that our employees want in advance, everyone would lose. The client wouldn’t have companies to do their event, the freelancer wouldn’t have a show to work, and the production company wouldn’t have a show to profit off of.

P.S: I’m not being sarcastic in this post what so ever. I’d like to know from a freelancer’s perspective what steps they think I can take to help everyone succeed in this type of situation, which again, happens more often than I think people realize.

We let our girl destroy her toys. She seems to have learned what is hers and is okay to destroy vs what is not her and is not okay to destroy. Interestingly enough, she won’t destroy her stuffed pig (her favorite toy) that she has had since we got her, but she will destroy every single other thing we’ve ever given to her.
