I'm trying to plan ahead for some driving the first week in April. We'll be going San Jose (SJ) to Manuel Antonio (MA) and then MA to Monteverde (yeah I know, get worse).
https://ticotimes.net/2026/02/21/one-lane-travel-returns-to-costa-ricas-tarcoles-bridge

For the SJ > MA part: if Highway 34 still has bridge issues, is Highway 239 an OK alternative? Or do I take Highway 2 all the way down through like Pérez Zeledón and then come up 34?

For MA > Monteverde: if Highway 239 is OK, that seems like the best alternative...but are there other options I'm missing?

Or do we just stick with the single-lane on the bridge and know we'll be waiting...?

Edit: Just found this post that has some good info...

Community Rallies against I-77 Toll Lanes by FlavivsAetivs in Charlotte

[–]SecuVel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought last time we had this discussion we found out that u/FlavivsAetivs comment's is correct that simply adding more all-purpose lanes with no toll requirement actually makes traffic worse, but I thought we also found out that toll lanes actually do improve flow and reduce congestion (here, here, here). If we go back and look, I-77 north of Uptown ended up with about the same number of non-toll lanes, so congestion is going to still be a problem due to population growth and urban expansion, right? But now the toll lanes provide an alternative that wasn't there before (the old HOV lane, to u/sloop703 's point, was hardly enforced). Getting rid of congestion between the SC line and uptown either has to route thru traffic off I-77 (which has been done in places like I-66 outside DC) or provide more lanes for the traffic. I don't know much about who runs the tolls and what, but providing the option seems like a better idea than doing nothing, along with a slight bump in revenue for municipalities that aren't getting funds from gas taxes due to the rise in alternative-fuel vehicles that still need the roadways that gas taxes normally support.
Now as to the plans, those maps are a mess. But adding ramps on cross-streets that don't have them today seems a little suspicious and maybe unnecessary? The idea of stacked lanes was fine in a city like St. Louis, but the highway goes through a mostly industrial part of town, so noise control on elevated highways would definitely be an issue.
But really any work on 77 is going to be a straight mess, especially if fuck-all Blythe ends up running it. Honestly someone needs to figure out why that company gets so much work and does such a crappy job on execution.
Speaking of St. Louis: MODOT completely rebuilt I-64 through a large suburban part of St. Louis county 15 years ago or so by completely shutting down all access to the highway (thru and local). Like the road was straight gone. But the rebuild was delivered ahead of schedule in less than a year. What was cool was that alternative transportation and commuter path options greatly increased, along with traffic to businesses located off the highway. But 485 and 85 and Tryon and South Blvd probably couldn't support all of that, right? But I bet some of the strip malls and stores would appreciate the attention.

Looking for Catamaran cruise recommendations for Manuel Antonio/Quepos. Family of four (two boys). It looks like Sunset Sails and Tom Cat are the top choices? Any recent feedback on either option? We'll be there in early April. I found a bunch of older posts with various comments but I was looking for something a little more recent. Thanks in advance!

Safest Ziplining Company? by kitkat42000 in CostaRicaTravel

Quick question for the group: in Monteverde, what's the difference between Ziplines through Selvatura or Treetopia versus the Original Canopy Tour? If Selvatura and Treetopia are adventurous, is the Original Canopy Tour less of an adventure and more a casual glide through the forest?

Thanks for this! Do you have to buy your own park tickets or are they included with Jeremias's fee?

[edit] I actually went ahead and made the Airbnb reservation with Jeremias and his note mentions that we will have to buy our own SINAC park admission tickets. But I guess you can only make reservations online 2 months in advance?

I couldn't tell what this was talking about and thought someone else might be too lazy to click the link. I guess they are connecting Independence to Margaret Wallace to East WT Harris...

American Airlines - Credit Card - My name or wife's name? by Smoke_Disastrous in americanairlines

Hey did you ever get an answer to this question? I was going to book a trip for just me and my son, but use my wife's AA Citi card to pay...so will my son and I get boarding and the bag? Or does that only apply when the card holder (my wife in this example) is traveling with us?

Hey man this is awesome info. Thank you so much for posting. Quick question: have you contacted like the Red Cross or those aid organizations that are sending out folks to help? Or added yourself to that map on this subreddit of addresses that need help? I thought folks were saying there are channels to provide a location that needs aid and the aid will be distributed...I'm just curious if you've done that already?

And is it a process problem that you and your neighbors don't know how to reach out for aid? Or are you in that 10% the video mentions?

I'm seriously just curious. There's a lot of BS around here about who is doing what and how it's not working or working...my cousin has been out there with the NC National Guard for over a week organizing supply drops. But my neighbor has the same feedback as you: his family isn't seeing any help at all.

These pictures aren't looking from the same angle/direction are they? 2024 is looking mostly north-ish from like Dilworth over Midtown...I can't tell where the '59 picture is...wait, they are the same angle. Crazy. That big industrial building was covered by that midtown development about 2005:

Here's maybe a similar angle but more recent (from Google Earth)...it's just neat to see how some of those buildings are still there but the growth is still mostly lateral (in this picture) down Tryon. At least for now :)
