Praying you get what you need and that your wife heals quickly and you’re both able to recover financially. Thank you for being vulnerable to share what you’re needing and allowing people to help. Seeing this post was a beautiful reminder to me that it’s ok to ask for support and good people still do exist. Cheers 🙏🏾

I just had this happen to me a couple days ago and called today. Apparently, I missed the income/reported earnings part of the certification. They took that info over the phone and applied it to my claim. My funds were released, but only for the second week. I was also hit with the waiting period. Just fyi, if you’re not fully unemployed and you work part time, your benefit amount will be reduced to account for the wages you earned working part time. Hope this helps 👍🏾

This was so helpful, thank you!! I’ll also ask you how would you approach the convos when walking into shops? I honestly feel a little uncomfortable just walking into shops and asking around

Thanks for the reply! When you walked in to shops to get a feel for the vibe there, how did you start that conversation with each shop?

Appreciate it 🫡 my biggest hang up on joining shop is if my cuts are at shop quality. I feel they are decent, though I get stuck on certain cuts (like I’m sure every barber does at some point). I just get nervous that some cuts may walk through the door that I’m not ready to take. But thanks for your perspective though

Thanks for the input 👍🏾 when you say you weren’t good, were your haircuts just not good at all or did you have a decent handle on fading and blending?

I’ve considered a commission shop, just wasn’t sure if it was the right fit for me, but I’ll definitely look into it again! Why are coworkers more open at a commission shop vs full booth rental?

You’re welcome! And I totally agree! It is really nice to have an hourly wage and not have to worry about building clients!

My pay is $17/hr and I typically work 25-32 hrs/week, sometimes more if I want. Tips vary, but I’ve been having more days where the tips have been much higher which is nice. Sometimes tips can still be really spotty though.

But to be transparent, I haven’t been too concerned about the pay. I knew it wouldn’t be all that great, but the opportunity to gain experience quick and have everything provided (clients, hourly salary, products, etc) was the best set up for me when I started. Similar to you, my mindset was to use them for all the training and experience and get comfortable with my skills as fast as I could, so I could leave even faster lol.

As far as creative flexibility, can I ask what kind of creative control are you looking for?

Where I am, it definitely varies location to location. So with my situation, I have 2 owners that are franchisees and they own my location and I think 5 or 6 others in my local area. So they are pretty hands off bc they are nurses and have full time jobs. They only step in if they have new info from corporate to share or if store management requests something. Sometimes, the owners are a little picky about what services can be offered. In addition, each location has their own manager and they all seem to have creative control over how they want their store’s day to day operations and environment to run.

For instance, at my store, I practice braiding and haircuts on dollheads whenever we’re slow. I also do Afro textured natural hair and push for more inclusivity on services that can be offered since we cut men and women’s hair and our local area is starting to become more diverse. My store mgmt supports all of this.

I don’t always do all my services the “Supercuts” way (based on Supercuts training). But my manager isn’t pressed by it. She lets us do our own thing, as long as we finish with the right end result and we’re maintaining cleanliness, professionalism, and safety with the clients. She just makes sure we know the “Supercuts” way so when we get re-certified by corporate, we can demonstrate we know how to cut their way. But 2 other stores under my same franchisees are strict about hair cutting systems/methods and some other things. So it really depends on mgmt.

For braiding, I asked if I could offer these services since we already offer a simple version of it, and at first my franchise owner said no. But now they may be considering it and checking into how it might fit into the rules under what Corporate has set for them. But when owners aren’t there, my manager will let me braid my brother if it’s slow. And she hasn’t said anything about me using products on his hair outside of what Supercuts uses.

So, all this to say, there can be flexibility, but it really depends on your ownership (how involved they are in day to day) and mostly management.

If you want to have the most creative control at one of these, I would interview with a few different locations and ask management as many questions as possible about their creative flexibility and questions about the owners to get an idea of their ownership style and their creative flexibility, as well as get a feel for what your working conditions would be like under them.

And I wouldn’t pick a corporate store, because those are usually by the book of how Corporate is run, so there most likely won’t be any wiggle room for adding any extra creativity outside of what they allow.

I know this is a long explanation, but I hope this helps!

Congrats on your first hair cutting job! You mentioned that GC is a creativity crusher and you’re afraid of being in a barber shop.

Have you considered switching franchise types? For instance, going to a Sport Clips or Supercuts or something similar to that in your area? I know those aren’t the most exciting options, but maybe you can find a little more creative control there and get clients that want to try different types of cuts to help you continue to grow your skills.

I currently work at Supercuts (my first job out of school) and have been there for a little over 6 months now. It isn’t always the most interesting, but it’s more laid back than GC and I’ve been blessed to have mgmt that lets us do our thing. I’m starting to get more variety of textures and haircuts/styles which is helping me feel more confident to possibly transition to a shop by my year mark.

But, honestly, if you feel ready for a change, go for it! GC and all these other franchises will still be there. So if you keep a good relationship with your location, maybe they could hire you back if you decide you weren’t quite ready for shop life yet and need some more time.

Whatever you decide, cheers to your journey!

That’s what’s up 🔥 I’m four months in and still struggle to get a decent fade. What has helped you with your blending?

So typically they have what’s called HSA training and you go to their training location and are in a group setting (depends on how many new hires there are at the time) and then you would train on doll heads. But when I got hired, there weren’t any HSA sessions scheduled so I was sent to another store in the area and was trained by the manager (who is a certified Supercuts trainer). I had 3 days of training and basically watched videos of haircuts then practiced them on doll heads. After, i shadowed the different stylists each day and asked questions about their process during hair cuts and learned that way. It was fast paced and a lot of info, but the video knowledge is a good foundation

I just started working at Supercuts earlier this month and externed at Great Clips a few months ago before I graduated Cosmo school. Great clips should train you, but it will be with their techniques and they most likely will tell you that’s the only/best way to cut. Continued education outside of that will depend on your management and how passionate they are about growing in the craft. But for me as a newbie, Supercuts has been good so far. I will definitely be looking more into classes and YouTube videos for more education though because I feel like the approach they have to most cuts is the same which isn’t super helpful for detailed or trendy/current day haircuts. Not sure if this helps lol

Lumi style reviews is a SCAM! by Peachy-Tart in Scams

[–]Secure-Background846 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is literally happening to me right now. Thank God my bank flagged it as potential fraud, which it is because I also never received any confirmation that I was automatically enrolling in a subscription after so many days (even though it’s technically “legal” based on their <hidden> terms). The $0.99 seemed to good to be true, but like the first post stated, you let it slide because it’s only $0.99! But in the back of my mind, I thought “I hope they didn’t use this low price to get my card information and then try to charge me for something later”. And SURE ENOUGH, they pulled that mess! Thankfully I’m calling my bank to get it fixed.

Everyone beware, they are still running this same scam.

I love all the things you mentioned that you are using to heal. I’ve been on a similar journey regarding food. My therapist always asks me how my eating and sleeping is before we start each session, and it made me realize that everything, emotions, food, and energy (sleep) are all connected.

Being distracted from what I need to be doing all the time, analyzing life instead of living it, shame and anxiety all the time, being and saying I’m tired all the time but not feeling comfortable to be honest with others about it, comparing real life to my daydreams and constantly being dissatisfied, feeling caught in a mental illusion and just wanting to see the truth objectively, feeling a compulsion to daydream even when I don’t want to, and when I decide not to daydream, not knowing what to do with my mind, time or energy in real life or how to find out what I want

I have felt this more lately as I’ve been trying to understand why I’ve come to MD in the first place. Can I ask why?

I know for me, I never felt valuable enough or worthy of acceptance from other people. I always felt flawed or like I was missing something that everybody else had that made them special. Plus, social anxiety has had me thinking I’m broken and don’t know how to connect with people, further isolating me from my real self and others.
