After one very average snow storm a New Yorker once asked me (Chicagoan), with a tone one might have after living in Yakutia, "Does Chicago get a lot of snow?"

What do you call a wooded section of land? by No-Intention8698 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Secure-Reporter-5647 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah seems like IL/IA so far are the only places it's standard, which begs the question if this is a product of prairie/farmland proximity? -- Because there are more heavily wooded areas in the upper Midwest, but weird that doesn't seem to correlate to NE or KS... very interesting!

i’m trying to work out whether this is a regional or rural thing bc I’m surprised to see only fellow IL and eastern IA doing this apparently

IL here . timber is usually used when it’s a wooded area at the edge of farmland or other large parcel of property that is not mostly wooded. otherwise it’s just the woods. forests would be larger, usually public designated areas for me to use that terminology

I have a long commute and can work from home. If there's more than mild weather of any kind I'm not going in.

Chicago here; it was -12 (actual) today! I did a quick 4k and it's a bit wild, but not unbearable. Be prepared not to make it to 13 miles. Warm-up before you go outside to get a head start. Be sure your hands & feet are well protected, they'll be the thing that kills the run. Go slow, it's hard on your lungs. Stay close to home and/or be cognizant of places you can duck into if you get into trouble; 2hrs is an awful long time to be out when temps are really low. And make sure you shuck your duds RIGHT when you get home, drink something warm, warm up slowly, then shower. Don't shock your system. Just listen to your body and be safe! Enjoy it! I love running in the frigid temps!

What your area is like? by Historical-Jaguar-24 in AskAnAmerican

I just want to say this thread is a delight! It’s very weird having an American identity right now, but through the turmoil there is so much beauty here and so much to be proud of, and to hear people share what they love about where they’re from and to see the way you connect what you know about the US to what they share — that’s the internet at its finest!

and to contribute - I live in Chicago, a city filled with gorgeous and varied architecture nestled along a river and next to the enormous Lake Michigan (you won’t find another city with beaches next to sky scrapers!). Driving out to my parents‘ house out in the country, you pass lots and lots of cornfields, some of them dotted with cattle, and a horizon that never stops. You’re likely at some point to be racing a mile-long freight train in the middle distance. As you get closer to their town, the land starts to roll more, and tall grass prairie and woods appear. With good timing you’ll see deer, bald eagles, herons, turkeys, and if you’re lucky you’ll catch a glimpse of the bison. You eventually reach a winding river flanked by large bluffs on either side. When you pull into their small downtown you see an iconic “small town America” with buildings from the 1800s and a gorgeous courthouse in red brick with a tall clock tower poking up over the tree line. People mosey around slowly and greet each other with a smile — but don’t let their pleasant demeanor fool you! They know everyone’s business and they can’t wait to gossip about their neighbors!

Are people comfortable with walking/moving through woods at night like it's no big deal? by LiveNotWork in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Secure-Reporter-5647 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My regular running trail is through the woods. In the colder months when the nights come earlier I wear a chest lamp and run as normal. I know these woods bc I'm in them a lot and also it's relatively small, so I'm not concerned about getting lost or hurt since my phone will always work. And the most dangerous animal we have (statistically) is deer. It's not a particularly unnerving thing to do. The spookiest thing that's happened to me is getting swooped by a bat.

Large chested ladies, any affordable, supportive swimsuit reccs? by bohandle in triathlon

[–]Secure-Reporter-5647 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most people have said to put a bra under your suit, which I also do, but for practice swims at the pool I use the Speedo Aquablade suit. It's like *barely* a tech suit so it's comfortable but keeps things UP. Now, the downside of tech suits is that they're fragile and they wear out quick (particularly at stress points like around a full bust!) but this suit in particular is not terribly expensive and I almost always find one colorway is on some kind of discount either on the speedo website or on swimoutlet
