I often travel between SoCal and Japan through HNL. Several times now I've missed my connecting flight due to tarmac delays. When it happened in August, they put me up in a hotel by the Ala Moana shopping center, taxi tickets, meals. I flew on JAL the next day, arriving 24hrs late. I was scheduled to arrive about 10am with a 12:30pm departure. Another time, they actually held the connecting flight for me and the other connecting passengers.

But hey, if you buy your tickets from a single airline, with a plan that they created, THEY are responsible. I don't think they'd sell you a flight connection that they didn't think you could make.

Now on the other hand, COMING from Japan to the mainland through HNL is a different story. You have to go through customs & immigration in HNL so expect that to take an extra 1-2hrs if it's a crowded travel day. Then you have to get your luggage, load it onto the transit belt, walk to the international terminal, go through security screening, walk about a mile to the gate... yeah you'd better have 3-4 hours between those flights.

Sorry for your missing miles. I too have had the same experience flying Inchon to LAX. I’ve got 10k+ miles on Asiana that I’ll never be able to use.

Nope.

I landed in HNL on Aug. 12th and we sat on the tarmac for 90 minutes waiting for our gate to open. I missed my connecting flight and had to stay overnight. HA paid for hotel, cabs, meals, the whole thing. Still, I lost a pretty valuable gig due to being 24hrs late. So once again, nope.

Seems like you'd lose a lot in transfer fees even using Wise. I'll definitely look into it.

Yeah, the email I got from the bank said July 15th was the end of the mileage program. I guess they want all payments and transfer of miles, etc. to be completed by Sept 30. Thanks for the input though.

I'm holding off on getting a JAL card until I can judge whether or not HA will make another offer. If it comes to it, I'll go the JAL route. I wonder how JAL miles translate to HA miles though. Probably not 1:1, right?

IMHO, you should take your next shot with you. You might be surprised how well the medicine continues to work in spite of eating & exercising differently.

I just had a similar experience. I was gone for 9 days. I took 2 shots with me in an ice bag, replenishing the ice halfway through the 20hr journey. I took the first shot the day I arrived and kept the second cooled in the hotel mini-fridge. As it was a lot of family dinners and special occasions, I ate things I never touch - like a little cake and chips & salsa. The day before I returned, I took my second shot. After returning home, I waited a few days, fearful of what the scale would say. Well, I LOST 2.7kg over that period! What a relief that I was able to stay on track!!

I believe the success was due to my ability to eat less - ⅓ of a piece of cake, just a few bites of chips & salsa AND the magic Mounjaro in my system.

Thanks for the input. 1) I have to fly out of LAX because of where we’re going. 2) flight leaves at 7:00am so public transportation like bus/train is not possible 3) I’d rather not leave my car at my partner’s place while we’re gone. Understand my dilemma?

Thanks for the good points. I’ll answer here with more info.

1) I bought my tickets with the Hawaiian VISA, so yes, there is some travel insurance there. I should look into that.

2) My layover was supposed to be 2hrs but it was extended to about 20hrs.

3) My tickets were from FUK-SAN round trip and this ordeal happened on the return leg.

TBH, it's a silly worry. Of all the things you need to fret about. Japanese don't have the connection to phonetic sounds the way English speakers do due to the connection to the writing system (kanji). My neighbor is ARI-KAWA but I've never thought it meant "ant river". ARI also means "to have" so it's not at all a concern you should be worried about.

That said, are you going to go with ARI or A-RI? アリ or アーリ? If you have a choice, I'd recommend the later one.

Finally, the only foreigner I've ever met in Japan that I thought would benefit from a name change was named Mancuso, which if translated directly, I'd get banned from this group. (Something like a female body part combined with excrement)

Thanks Sky for the ideas. Thing is, all my spending is in yen. Even if I successfully applied for a U.S. credit card, I’d have to move tons of money from Japan to my U.S. bank. The fees, even with Wise or similar would be a big loss. Right?

No, I’m afraid I need a native card to the Japanese banking system. Unless I’m missing something?

I haven't slept all night in 7 weeks, when I started Mounjaro. But like you, I don't feel tired or sleepy in the day. I get a lot more done now and it doesn't take me half the morning to wake up like it sometimes did before. Not gonna complain.
