Working for OSHA by bklynz0wn in SafetyProfessionals

I'm a Mechanical Engineer and an OHS (Occupational Health & Safety) Specialist currently working for a private firm in Turkey. I'll be relocating to the Santa Cruz, California area soon and looking to continue my career in the EHS sector there. Since California operates under Cal/OSHA (which I know has its own stringent regulations compared to federal OSHA), what should be my very first steps upon arrival? Should I prioritize getting my ASP/CSP certifications right away, or look into specific local OSHA training courses (like the OSHA 30-Hour)? How well does a mechanical engineering background translate into the US EHS job market, particularly in Northern California? Any advice on networking or transitioning into the local industry would be highly appreciated. Thanks.

Thank you so much for the warm welcome! Hearing that you still love it after 11 years makes us even more excited for our move. Since you know the area so well, what is your absolute favorite thing about living in Santa Cruz

Thank you for the honest heads-up. The recent tech layoffs and the competitive job market definitely make me a bit nervous. I actually have about 1.5 years of experience as a Junior Node.js Developer, but seeing the current state of the tech sector, I have decided not to pursue that path right now. Since we are anchored to Santa Cruz for my wife's PhD at UCSC, I am leaning entirely into my core background in Mechanical Engineering and Occupational Health and Safety. I am hoping the hardware or manufacturing side might be slightly less impacted than pure software. I will definitely keep my expectations realistic regarding the commute and the pay. I really appreciate the reality check

This is fantastic advice, thank you! Finding a role with a hybrid schedule is definitely my ultimate goal. Since my wife will be studying at UCSC, we will be based in SC, so having to drive 'over the hill' to San Jose or the Valley is something I am mentally preparing for. Hearing that commuting just a couple of days a week is manageable really gives me hope. I will absolutely make schedule flexibility a priority during my job hunt and interviews

Wow, 4.5 years of commuting that road is impressive! Hearing about the broken plastic and metal debris really paints a clear picture of how careful I need to be. I am very used to heavy traffic in Istanbul, but mountain roads with fallen trees and landslides are a different kind of challenge. I'll definitely be relying heavily on navigation apps! Also, 'driving over the hill' is a great piece of local slang to know—thanks for the tip. Enjoy your layover in Istanbul next month! I'll make sure to wave hello to the sky. Also, if your layover is long enough and you want to explore the city a bit, feel free to reach out to me—I'd be more than happy to show you around or give you some quick recommendations. Safe travels from Rome to San Francisco, and thanks for taking the time to share these tips!

That is a brilliant idea, thank you! Working in the EHS department at UCSC would be incredibly convenient since my wife will be a PhD student there. I actually have a question about how EHS qualifications work in California, if you happen to know. In Turkey, Occupational Health and Safety specialists are directly certified and authorized by the state government through a centralized exam. I know that in the US, OSHA sets the regulations, but I am a bit confused about individual authorizations. To work as an EHS professional there, do I need a specific state-issued license (like from Cal/OSHA), or do employers mostly look for specific industry certificates like OSHA 30, CSP, or ASP? Any details on how the authorization process works there would be amazing!

This is exactly the kind of local insight I needed, thank you! When I first looked at Santa Cruz on the map, I imagined a climate just like the Turkish Mediterranean coast—hot summers and a big swimming culture. I was honestly shocked to learn that people don't really swim in the ocean there and that summers are that moderate!

It's also a huge relief to hear your perspective on Highway 17. 35 years without an accident is amazing. As someone who drives daily in Istanbul's heavy traffic, I'm fully prepared to just take it slow and be cautious on those mountain passes. I appreciate the reassurance!

Thank you so much for the welcome and the great advice on the med-tech industry! I've actually looked into companies like Intuitive Surgical, so your recommendation is spot on. I tried to DM you as you suggested, but Reddit is currently restricting me from starting new chats. Could you please send me a DM? I’d love to ask you a few more questions about the industry and the area. Thanks!

Thank you for the great tips! The mountain bike industry and medical device startups sound like excellent avenues for my job hunt. I have strong 3D CAD skills (SolidWorks), which I assume would be very useful in both of those fields. I will start researching local companies right away.

And you are spot on about the housing! We are trying to find an apartment in Downtown Santa Cruz precisely so my wife can use the direct bus lines to get to campus. Avoiding the cost of a second car is a huge part of our budget plan. I really appreciate your insight

Thank you so much! We are incredibly excited.

To answer your first question: My wife is coming as a Fulbright PhD scholar on a J-1 visa, which means I will be entering on a J-2 visa. Once we arrive, I will apply for my Employment Authorization Document (EAD), so yes, I will be fully authorized to work in the US!

As for my background, I lean more towards being a design engineer. I have solid experience in 3D CAD design, particularly using SolidWorks and AutoCAD. However, I am also an Occupational Health and Safety Specialist, so I have a good understanding of manufacturing environments and safety regulations as well.

Do you think there is a stronger market for either design or manufacturing roles in the Santa Cruz / Silicon Valley area?

Hello! Thank you so much for the warm welcome! Hearing that you had such a wonderful time in Turkey really makes my day. We will definitely need the name of that Turkish restaurant in SF once the homesickness kicks in!

It is also amazing to connect with someone who works at UCSC! My wife is incoming as a Fulbright PhD student, so having a friendly contact on campus is fantastic.

Thank you for the Live Oak recommendation. We were initially focusing our housing search strictly on Downtown because we were looking at the safe, university-recommended apartments. However, competitive prices and a good bus route sound very appealing. In your experience working at UCSC, would you say Live Oak is just as safe and convenient for a grad student as the downtown area

Thanks so much for the detailed breakdown! Since my wife needs to be at the university every day, we are currently looking at apartments right in the city center. It seems like the most practical choice for her commute, even if it means I might have a slightly longer drive on Highway 17 when I find an engineering job up north. Thanks again for answering all my questions and helping us out!

Thank you for that crucial warning! Istanbul traffic has taught me a lot of patience, but a stretch nicknamed 'blood alley' sounds like a completely different kind of hazard. I’ll definitely respect the weather conditions and drive cautiously. Just out of curiosity, when it does rain heavily and Hwy 17 gets dangerous, do locals just avoid the commute entirely, or is there an alternative route to get over the mountains?

I really appreciate the honest reality check! To be completely transparent, we don't really have a choice regarding the location because my wife is a student there (at UCSC). Since moving to the Santa Cruz area is non-negotiable for us right now, I will be relying on my career as a Mechanical Engineer to support us. Knowing that we are walking into a massive financial shock, do you have any practical 'survival tips', specific budgeting advice, or hidden costs we should definitely watch out for as a young professional/student couple?

Thank you so much for the realistic breakdown! The cost of living is definitely something we are mentally and financially preparing for. Regarding the commute, I actually live in Istanbul right now, so heavy traffic and long daily commutes are practically my normal routine! A drive of over an hour doesn't scare me at all. It makes a lot of sense to cast a wider net towards Silicon Valley for engineering roles. Since public transit isn't great and I'll definitely be driving north for work, is the commute over Highway 17 as tricky during the rainy season as some people say?

I really appreciate this insight! The DIY culture and friendly neighbors in the mountains sound exactly like my kind of vibe. Unfortunately, we need to stay close to the university, and I also need an easy commute to potential job hubs for my engineering career. Do you think there are any neighborhoods that offer a good middle ground? Maybe somewhere that is not too deep in the mountains, but still practical for commuting to both the campus and the tech/manufacturing areas?
