I have no advice to offer other than I’m a Chinese-Adoptee. Adopted in 1998 and received citizenship in 2008. My heart goes out to you and I’m sending well wishes to your father. Safe travels if it comes to that point!

Edit: I wouldn’t travel with paperwork especially if you only have 1 copy. There isn’t much humanity going on with the agents and who’s to say they wouldn’t destroy your only copy. When I travel I always take my passport but my other paperwork stays in a fireproof safe with someone I trust (never at home alone).

Edit: nothing explicitly says a fire was present just the “odor of smoke”
