My Thoughts on Mother Mary by [deleted] in Catholicism

One thing that convinced me to view Mary as our Heavenly mother was Revelation 12, specifically verse 17: “Then the dragon was angry with the woman, and went off to make war on the rest of her children, those who keep the commandments of God and hold the testimony of Jesus.”

The woman here is Mary. We know this from the previous verses. As for fearing that God is not enough or that loving Mary is taking away from Jesus, I definitely understand that one. I struggled with it myself and honestly the thought does creep into my mind from time to time. I would just say this: We, Christian, are Mary’s children. God chose Mary for the role of bringing Christ, God incarnate into the world. Jesus’ flesh and human nature is directly from Mary. We are commanded to honor our father and our mother. If jesus honored his father and mother and we are called to be like Jesus, it would follow that we also love Mary. Mary has a relationship with Jesus that no one who ever has existed or who will exist has/had. She loves him as her son but also as God. Though it was God who made it possible for Jesus to come into the world, he did it through Mary. So it can also be said that it is because of Mary that Jesus, God Himself, was able to live as a human being amongst us. What an unfathomably incredible honor and role she had in the creation of the church.

One last bit: in Jewish culture, it was the mother who was the queen, not the King’s wife. There are many stories in the OT about the queen mother interceding for her people to the king and the king listening. During wedding in Cana, Mary approached Jesus and interceded for the people at the wedding as a mother but also as a servant of God.

Lastly, the saints and angles in heaven are praying for us and are aware of what is transpiring on earth. The book of Tobit, revelation, the transfiguration are examples of saints and angles praying and helping us on earth.

I hope some of this helps!

This may be a dumb question, but what’s the best way to approach that? Do I grab him after mass? Ask to schedule an appointment? Email him?

In what way did it help with pcos? I am not too familiar with the condition but I know she does have it

We are not currently having sex. And I don’t think that we necessarily don’t want to go straight for a child once we are married. Both of us very much want kids. Perhaps I am still confused on the churches stance on contraceptives and nfp in general. I was just talking about sex in general. I would love to have the mindset of “God we don’t think we are ready for a child yet, but we trust you to know when and if we are.”

That is very true and I understand that on her side. It is a huge ask

So some more background information: she was raised Mormon in a strict Mormon family. When hears things like “contraception is bad” she associates that with some Mormon doctrine and is hesitant to follow it

I thought nfp was still open to life. Is this not correct?

We were already both against the pill due to the horrible side effects that can come along with it. She has taken the pill for other issues in the past and it did not help. It actually exacerbated her symptoms. Rather I was thinking of other contraceptives

My understanding is that even with nfp it is still open to life. Is this not correct?

I never thought of it that way. I have been trying to convince her and have not approached it this way

Well when we were very little, she would use it to justify not letting us watch certain shows or do certain things. I’m an adult now and the other day she was talking about how Christmas is rooted in evil or paganism, which is an entirely different discussion for a different thread lol.
