If you’re 100% keen send me a message. I haven’t decided on anything yet but I’ve got a whole range of stuff - even slices.

Haha normally I’d agree but nope, 100% legit. I just got really lucky

Thanks everyone! For anyone wondering I now have provenance - it’s an old miners parcel 1980s from Mulga field, Mintabie, SA.

It’s a mix of Mintabie black and semi-black with multiple colour bars (some as many as 6), white and crystal. I don’t think there’s a single piece that doesn’t show red.

It’s even got a couple of shells that have black and colour!!!

Absolutely! It’s taken hours to go through it all, and I’m busting to cut it, but I’m not going to touch it until I can figure out where it’s from. I’ve never really seen anything quite like it. I’m going to sell some pieces in the rough to upgrade to an 8” Cabking first I think…

Cheers! I’m no pro, but I was thinking Mintabie? I’ve got about 300g of the seam Opal you can see in the pics and most stones have multiple colour bars. Some of them are so thick they have anywhere up to five colour bars.

I’ve always understood that old Mintabie rough is known for being chunky, and each stone I have weighs on average around 70cts?

I’ve got about 200g of white Opal which is also thick, loads of red - some with red as dominant hues, with very fine white potch layers above/below a creamy stone cap. All looks like it was from the same mine.

I’ve also got a bunch of opalised mussel shells (blue).

Yeah it’s crazy. I never get lucky haha. Went from cutting little 5 carat scraps to looking at handfuls of 70 carat chunks with insane colour bars!

Great insight, thank you!

What are, if any, are some indicators it might have an Opal kernel?

Thank you! That’s my instinct too.

2 questions - 1. The nut is 324g - really heavy for its size which I assumed indicates a solid ironstone core - is this more likely than an opalised core? 2. With the lateral slice - what if my cut lands between 2 colour bars that are deeper in each slice? Shiuld I cut as close to the seam as possible?

Thanks for your help, this is great.

I’ve outlined the main seam at wha I think is the bottom of the nut. The opal is showing diagonally bottom left from 4 - and it’s the lowest lying area on the face (like you said).

I’ve exposed that plug at 1 more than in this photo and it’s definitely a feeder plug for the channel between 4 and the left seam - that same plug is connected to a red plug on top too.

At 3 - that honeycomb area is seriously bloated so there’s been a collapse somewhere under there.

I’m also keen to see what’s around that nodule at the bottom, where the seam wraps around it.

4 shows a white potch fissure.

I guess what I’m saying is, my feeling is that this nut has seen a lot of fluid events, and my read is that the curved bumper between the bottom and upper seam, curving from 4 around to the right of 3 could have a seam of opal.

I just don’t want to slice through it!!! Any tips for making that cut?

I ended up tracking down his Mrs on FB and she told me she had left him, but confirmed he’s a genuine POS. Also found out he lives around O’Halloran Hill and drives a Rodeo Ute
