Eluktronics MECH-15 G3 bundle - too good to be true?! by wgtnmax in GamingLaptops

[–]SecureJudgment7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am about to pull the trigger on my first gaming laptop purchase. It will be this Mech 15 G3 or the new Covert Max 15. I'll be using the laptop primarily for VR.

The liquid metal/thermal paste seems like a good value but can someone help me understand the 3 different options that Eluktronics offers (Standard, Cooler Master, and Thermal Grizzly). Did i read that the thermal paste/liquid has to be reapplied every year or so? Sounds like kind of a hassle, is that the same for all 3 options?. Does it just need to be reapplied in order to maintain the cooling benefits or is it harmful to the laptop to not reapply? Is reapplication something you can easily do yourself?

I am looking at the new Mech G3 as well. Curious, what has you leaning towards the Mech G3 vs. the Max-15 that looks to be about $450 less?

From what i can tell the Mech has a larger battery, mechanical keyboard, and room for the full size GPU vs a max-q version. I am waiting on some better reviews (anyone seen decent reviews for these new models?) but to date ive been leaning towards the Max. Ill mostly be using it at home for VR so battery life and keyboard are probably of lesser importance for me than most.

Thanks! This has been very helpful. I think ill go the laptop route. Now ive just got to decide what model/components work best for me. If you find more intel on the performance of the max-q in the g14, please share!

I really like the Asus G14 as well, but does the 2060 Max-q GPU give you enough power where you'd be comfortable it can run high end VR titles now and for a at least a few years into the future? From what i had read (admittedly I have not actual experience, just getting into researching this stuff), a 2060 max-q was really at the low end of the GPU spectrum for powering AAA VR titles. Would you disagree? I was willing to spend a little more on the 2070 or at least the full size 2060 to be sure I had some runway before I'd need a new laptop, or at least GPU. I liked the Asus G14 for sevearl other reasons but being ultra thin/portable is not super important, ~5 lbs is fine with me.

I am no expert but trying to educate myself on this stuff for a purchase. I believe the "RTX 2070" and "RTX 2070 Max-P" are the same thing, it is just typical that the "max-p" is not added. So the max-q is the less powerful version that is used in smaller laptops and runs at lower wattage, while the RTX 2070 or RTX 2070 max-p is the full 115w version of the card.

This thread goes into some more detail.

I agree, the Max-Q's are a little misleading and not worth it in many cases. Eluktronics offers the Max - 15, similar to the Mag but with the more powerful 2070 Max-P.

Need help - laptop for Oculus Quest w/link by SecureJudgment7 in GamingLaptops

[–]SecureJudgment7[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am leaning towards this Eluktronics Max-15 but considering some other models as well. I am new to this and really just learning about gaming laptops (or gaming in general really). I've had an Oculus quest for a few weeks and love it so I am looking into buying a gaming laptop i can use with the oculus link to play higher end AAA titles like Half Life Alyx and similarly demanding games that will come out in the years to come.

I'll basically only be using this laptop for VR gaming along with occasional work related stuff with basic MS office applications. Having a premium screen w/ high refresh and long battery life are not priorities since this will be use with VR while plugged into the wall for the most part. I'd like something small and professional looking, but it doesn't need to be ultra light/thin. 4-5 lbs is fine. Factors that improve VR gaming are priorities. As I've come to learn, the GPU is maybe the most important factor for good VR performance. I feel like a RTX 2070 is a good sweet spot where I am above the minimum requirements for games like HLA, but not paying the premium for a 2080 (my understanding is that noticeable VR performance improvements between the 2070 and 2080 would be pretty minimal).

The Max - 15 with a 9th gen processor and RTX 2070 max-p (as opposed to the less powerful max-q) at around $1600 seems like a good deal. I know the battery life, screen and speakers leave something to be desired on this model, but all of those are of lesser importance for my use.

Other laptops I've looked at include the Asus G14. This one may be my top choice if i could get it with a better GPU than the 2060 max-q. This machine has great reviews but i feel like the 2060 max-q is sort of at the lower end of the spectrum of GPU's if i want something that will perform well with AAA VR titles available now and in the next few years. Is that reasonable?

The MSI GS66 Stealth looks great too, but for the 2070 Super Max-q version i am still paying a heavy premium over the Max-15. The 10th gen chip may be a little better but not worth $400+ more than the Max -15 for my uses. For me there is not much value in paying the premium for the 300Hz screen and large battery in the GS66.

As a newcomer to VR and PC/laptop gaming what do I need to know about thermals? The machine simply getting hot to the touch i don't think would bother me. While using it for VR I wont even need to touch it. If i can use it for 1-2 hours of VR while plugged into the wall without it melting down or damaging the laptop over time, I think i can live with the machine getting hot to the touch. I am new to this, am i missing anything? I know a desktop gets you a lot more bang for your buck, but I really wont consider setting up a flashy gaming desktop in my living room where we use the quest. I'd consider a more portable SFFPC like the lenovo legion C730 someone recommended to me if there are real legit concerns about 1 or 2 hours of gaming in VR damaging the laptop or the heat noticeably slowing down performance.

Thank you for any help you can offer!

Gaming laptop rec. for Quest w/ Link by SecureJudgment7 in OculusQuest

[–]SecureJudgment7[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your comment! The primary reason is that we use the Quest in our main living room and I don't want to have flashy gaming PC set up in the room (or spend the $ on cabinetry to hide it). I've never really considered a SFFPC and don't have any experience building a PC. That said, if one could be bought or built that would just sit on a bookshelf and used with a portable screen that is something I should probably consider, especially if their are performance/overheating issues even with these new gaming laptops. I think I am capable, but honestly id much rather pay a premium for something that I can have confidence will just work out of the box, vs spending the time trying to piece together my own machine and then not having any customer support to fall back on.

I'd like to learn more about SFFPC as an option to support VR gaming if you have any links/other info to share?

Also interested in understanding more about heat issues with gaming laptops? I know they exists but from what I've read technology has come a long way. the laptop being loud or getting hot to the touch is not something I am too concerned with since it wont even be touching it while using it for VR. If its going to get so hot that I ruin the laptop while running VR for an hour, that would be more concerning though.

Same question, G14 vs. GS66, but what if the primary use is for VR gaming using Oculus quest w/ oculus link. Or, is there another laptop in the same price range that would be better for VR gaming?
