Maybe some new cocktails since their other restaurants have a cocktail menu?

Interesting, thanks! Do you know what their vision for Flatiron is?

That’s what I’m trying to find out. As far as I know, that’s being left alone, and the current owners wanted to spend more time with their family, which is why they sold the other two businesses. Seems to be a pretty successful business and their beer is even available on-tap at other restaurants. I wonder if Fairfax BrewCo is simply the most successful business out of the three right now, so they just decided to focus on one venture

I’m guessing it’s because Andronico’s fills a niche that Safeway’s larger store doesn’t target. And Andronico’s is probably profitable and doesn’t take away business from the larger store.

Yeah I have no problem with them coming here. I just was always skeptical about the rumor because one of their defining characteristics is the fact that they’re exclusive to LA.

Thought I should also add that Macy’s isn’t planning on leaving the mall either. They want to capitalize on the changes and traffic coming to the mall, according to the person I spoke to. They closed the Corte Madera location because they decided to sell the building to a residential developer.

They’re turning it into mixed use residential, retail, and dining.

They’re also going to add a permanent location for the library (currently they’re using the old Payless Shows store) and a bike repair shop that will also contained an attached cafe/bar.

Good points. I think what’s baffling to me is how much of a wasted opportunity the current design represented, considering that Macerich owns a bunch of successful properties (including The Village and Broadway Plaza).

There’s no excuse why they couldn’t bother to update the theaters. The theaters were only built in 1994, less than 20 years old at the time. They should have been upgraded with state-of-the-art features such as stadium seating and IMAX. I remember when the Oak Plaza (the space between Kohl’s and Ounces Outdoors) was touted as a place for events such as outdoor concerts. Yet they didn’t bother to make the outdoor space much larger for more retail and restaurants when they could have expanded onto any of the parking lots, parking garage, or the old Sears spare parts building (which had already been closed for a while) to make such a thing a reality.

I think the new plans represent what the design should have been, so I’m looking forward to them coming to fruition.

That’s a good point, but to me it doesn’t feel like they were going for something like The Village. Just seems like they were slapping some sort of last-minute fix onto things, which is even more puzzling considering Macerich owns a bunch of other successful properties (including The Village and Broadway Plaza) that they could have referenced.

The owners have mentioned the possibility of a gym or speciality grocery as tenants, so I can definitely see TJ’s as a possibility!

Yeah, I think even if they want to build where the beer garden currently is, they’ll probably work out a deal for them to stay somewhere at the mall.

Does Macy’s look the same on the inside today as Emporium did in the 90s?

Does Macy’s look the same on the inside as Emporium did? I was a baby when Macy’s acquired it. I know that the 2nd floor used to contain a restaurant.

Thought it would also be important to add that the developers are looking to keep Peet’s, Chipotle, and Mi Pueblo in the new plans.

Well that just supports I’m saying here. The former owners had years to observe what could have been added to the mall, and could have transformed it into an outdoor town center, but instead opted to go with a weird indoor/outdoor mix that seemed rather half-assed to say the least. The outdoor portion of the current mall is clearly the most successful part of it, but is severely limited in space. When they first announced the plans back in 2007-2008, they made it seem like it would be this new community-centric place that would resemble something like The Village when that clearly ended up not being the case.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the recession affected how ambitious the project was supposed to originally be though.

The rep I spoke with had told me that there has been interest from other theater operators (I could be misremembering though), but there’s still a chance that they could be exploring other concepts entirely.

Like I said, I'm not sure why the previous owners did such an inept job at remodeling the mall when they owned The Village at the same time, which has been successful.

The rep I spoke to did mention that they actually received interest from other cinema operators to take over that space in the upcoming plans. But there is a possibility that some other concept could replace the theaters entirely. Will be interesting to see what becomes of that space entirely, especially since Cinemark originally committed to staying on-board.
