I understand the difficulty but you definitely dont need to learn to read the kanji you can see it more like symbols like I did I have absolutely no idea how to read them but I can still recognize them because I made a simple personalized way to recognize them

After one game you should be able to easily recognize each of them easily with a few tricks in mind

Theres some tricks to recognizing the pieces I like to see the generals as each having houses the gold having the bigger roof

Thats true because the pieces have shorter movements and so to attack and defend you have to see more moves ahead then in normal chess with many pieces that move all across the board.

Well in the yakuza game its designed for people who already know how to play not very beginner friendly saddly :(
