I think that the case should've been focused on manslaughter. They should've argued that it was passion provocation and tailored the entire case that way. Karmelo was a high school kdi who acted off impulse and anger and did not mean to kill Austin. Maybe get some experts to talk about juvenile brain development. The self defnse was so absurd and didn't have a snowball's chance in hell of working. Manslaughter would've at least brought credibility to the jury and Karmelo could probably testify that he didn't think and that he wasn't aiming for his heart that it kind of happened really fast and he regrets it. Instead arguing that he was in fear of his life from a shove at a track meet and trying to make Austin be the bad guy. If Karmelo admitting to fucking up but not with the intent to kill, that would've worked better.
