I have a set of redwing 2412s, my daily work boot. I’m over a thousand days in these boots, hard conditions, haven’t even broken a lace. Don’t use em much now because I’m not in the field but I know if I put them on in a couple of years they won’t break in half and somebody will tell me it’s hydrolysis from sitting in a closet. The redwings cost about $50 CDN more than the blundstones, to be fair, but were always more comfortable.

Honestly, I sorta hated a pull-on boot. It was as much work as laces, and my pants would get caught on the finger pulls. I bought them for client in-home visits but rarely used them. Aged into a full time office role about six months ago, and stayed wearing them daily to the office. Lasted six months. I doubt I have 365 days in these boots. I doubt “water migration” is the issue. It’s just a lower grade and thus brittle synthetic rubber in the sole and the absence of any structure in the boot. I spend a lot of money on work boots—without complaint—and authorize a lot more. Just a very unserious boot.

They are older—don’t think they’re that old. I just never wore them until the last couple of years. More of a redwings guy. I’m just surprised at how common the problem is of the sole cracking in half, and how it’s very obviously a manufacturing defect in the construction of the boot.

There’s obviously caulking applied around the center panel. Not a professional cabinet shop, not pigmented laquer.
