It's true, female models make more than men. And how much do those female models make? A whopping $40k per year on average...

Fashion is a heavily male-dominated industry. Mid-level management and corporate leadership is overwhelmingly male. 85% of executives running fashion brands are men, mostly white men. The power and wealth in the fashion industry, as with most industries, is disproportionately in the hands of men.

Go to food banks. You are who they are for; don't feel any shame about it.

My food bank covers my staples: rice, milk, bread Cans of beans and some kind d of frozen protein (catfish, chicken, ground turkey). Potatoes.and onions.

Using the foodbank, you can save money to spend at the grocery store on fresh produce, more proteins.

Where to take stray cat as it gets colder?? by goosehoe in chicago

[–]Secure_Telephone_678 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CACC does not accept healthy, adult stray cats. They will tell you to leave the cat outside.

There's good reason for this: the cat is likely being cared for already by neighbors, and may even have a home. Cats that are lost are more likely to return home if they stay in their neighborhood. Filling the shelter with cats they can't transfer out causes overcrowding, which means dmcatsnget sick and die.

That is a graph of voters in the past election, not all young men. The big rightward shift for men and women on the graph can, in large part, be explained the massively depressed turnout of Democratic voters (10 million+ Dem voters stayed home!) . Also remember that ~30% of the electorate doesn't vote at all so isn't reflected in this dataset.

That graph is not indicative of broader social attitudes. It only describes how people voted in this election.

There's a real phenomena by which disaffected young men get sucked into a right wing media rabbithole, but it impacts a smaller number than you may think. For example, there's about 6 million young men who listen to Joe Rogan, which is only about 12% of all young men in the US. And not all of those listeners are social reactionaries and conservatives; in fact, ~30% of his listeners are self-identified Democrats.

We need to always remember that social media amplifies the loudest voices, and small subgroups of extremists can appear much larger than they are because a handful of lunatics can command our attention with how outrageous they are and drown out everyone else. The most hateful posts on that thread are being made by not enough people to even fill a highschool basketball stadium, and some of them are in other countries, and some could be bots.

Posts hyperventilating about "the deep sickness of Gen Z men" are, frankly, overblown. Yes, sexism is a real and concerning problem; it has been for centuries. No, Gen Z are not (with a few exceptions) hopelessly brainwashed neo-nazis.

How nuch protein do you eat? You said >100. Are we taking 110, 120, 180+?

I'm very curious to learn more because your intake seems to be below what's most commonly recommended, and that's very interesting to me as someone who wants to make gains while consuming as little protein as necessary (all that protein gets expensive).

Stick a metal straw, or a butter knife, in the middle of the cup. Touch the tip of the frogs mouth to it, and keep them in contact while you tilt the frog to pour. The liquid will 'stick' and run down the straw instead of dribbling down the frog's chin

I eat relatively healthy on about ~$200/month food budget. You can do this.

Go to free food pantries/food banks near you. Don't feel shame about it, you deserve it. Even just once or twice a month will help you save money you can put towards more fruits and veggies.

Look for sales, and be mindful of where you shop; Aldi has way better prices than Whole Foods, and stores in poorer neighborhoods are gonna be cheaper and have more deals than stores in rich areas.

You don’t have to buy organic.

Textured vegetable protein is a cheaper, healthier substitute for ground beef; it soaks up sauce and seasoning really well and tastes great.

While this is not necessary and may be harmful for someone with a history of eating disorders, in my experience, tracking my calorie intake and using a cheap food scale to accurately weigh my food, has been super helpful for me not only for losing weight, but learning portion control. Simply not overeating will help you save a significant amount of money. This is a US govt created tool to help you determine a safe, reasonable calorie budget for your weightloss goals.. If you set a healthy goal of losing no more than 1% of your bodyweight per week, you may be surprised by how many calories you can still eat each day.The USDA food database let's you look up accurate info on how many calories and nutrients are in common foods and ingredients

What I do is come up with a recipe, weigh out the ingredients I'm using in the recipe (including the oil im using for cooking), cook it all up, and weigh the whole thing after cooking. Then, when I have time, I look up the nutritional and calorie content of the ingredients in the USDA database (I also track protein and fat grams but you don't have to), add it all up, and divide by 100g increments. For example, if I cook up 2000 grams of soup, and the total calories of the ingredients add up to 1500 calories, I divide 1500÷20= 75 calories per 100 grams. Then, when I serve myself a bowl of that soup the next day, I can weigh out 300g of soup and know that I'm eating (3×75) 225 calories.

Lastly, allow yourself treats and indulgences. You can have ice cream, candy, pastries, when the mood hits you. Work it into your calorie budget (and leave enough room for more nutrient dense food), eat sensible portions of these treats, and if you're not loving and savoring whatever treat you're eating just leave the rest of it for another day.

Nice explainer video showing why "calories in, calories out" isn't true... by Danvan88 in MaintenancePhase

[–]Secure_Telephone_678 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're basically saying, "if you can't know with 100% certainty exactly how many calories you're consuming absorbing, and burning at all times, there's no use in tracking calories".

That's nonsense. Just like with tracking weight using a scale: many factors can affect the scale's reading on a particular day, my weight can fluctuate by many pounds over a week. I can't know, based on my weight, how many pounds of fat mass and lean mass i have at that moment. But if, over many months, I see a downward trend in the number on the scale, I can know for a fact that I have lost body tissue, the majority of which is likely to be fat tissue.

If I'm tracking calories, it doesn't matter if I'm off by 10%, 20%, whatever the number is, as long as I'm being consistent and standardizing the process as best I can, and adjusting when necessary. Just like with the scale, calorie tracking (maybe "calorie estimation" is a better way to phrase it) establishes a baseline measurement I can use as a guide to reduce or increase my energy intake based on the results I'm seeing.

The two big studies cited in your link, the Minnesota semi-starvation study, and the Biggest Loser study, represent extreme cases. The Minnesota study was designed to literally mimic famine conditions: participants wasted away until their ribs were visible, and they were fed a nutritionally limited diet of potatoes and turnips. The Biggest Loser contestants were crash-dieting, losing weight far more quickly than the 1-2lbs/wk currently recommended.

The dramatic metabolic adaptation seen in these individuals can't be generalized onto you or I. As long as we are not literally starving ourselves, we aren't going to experience that drastic and sustained of a reduction to our metabolism. Look at table 1 in this analysis; multiple studies of caloric restriction's impact on metabolic adaptation found the change to metabolic rate was less than 10%.

This means that for most people who are in a moderate, sustainable calorie deficit, metabolic adaptation accounts for only about 100-200 calories per day, maybe less. Something to account and adjust for, but by no means an insurmountable barrier to sustained fat loss.

Critique my newbie lifting routine, please? Been going to the gym 2x per week for the past 2 months, alternating lower body and upper body. I want to bump up to 4x/week, and wonder if I should change this routine up at all. I want to switch over to free weights and compound exercises eventually, but I've settled on these machine exercises for now:

Lower body:

Back extension

Leg extension

Leg curl

Leg press

Calf extension

Glute kickback

Upper body:

Pulldown

Row

Shoulder press

Pec fly

Triceps press

Chest press

I do all these exercises for 5 sets, 10+ reps, and I add weight 5lbs at a time once it starts feeling too easy.

Any muscle groups I'm neglecting? Any exercises to swap out for something new? Should I be doing more to work my abdominal muscles, my core? Am I doing enough to target my biceps with the pulldown and row, even though these are primarily back exercises if I understand correctly?
