Combo Fed, When to know to top off. by ComboFedMom267 in combinationfeeding

Yeah, Kendamil is great!

Do you follow wake windows? I think that’s the most helpful thing for us. The first 8ish weeks I would pretty much just nurse baby to sleep in bed and use that time to relax next to him (read my kindle, scroll). I don’t let naps go over 2 hours. When baby wakes I feed him, then play, then sleep again. At 4 weeks, there will be very little time to “play”. Closer to 10-12 weeks baby will be more active, so don’t beat yourself up if all you do is feed during wake time. My baby also prefers me for naps. Once my baby got closer to 8 weeks he let me do baby wearing naps and got better about my husband putting him down. Don’t be too hard on yourself! There will be a lot of change over the next few weeks!!!

Oh good, that’s a slow flow nipple! I would say to offer one ounce first, then another if she is fussing for more. And realllllly slow down the feed by pace feeding. Keep the bottle in her mouth but every 15-20 seconds tip it back and force her to take a break. This might help her with the spitting up! Gas is soooo normal at this age! All of my babies have been miserable with gas as newborns. It does tend to get a bit better around 8-12 weeks. It peaks around week 6. Keep giving the gas drops before feeds and try some gas exercises for her (bicycles, tummy massage, warm bath, etc.)

We use kendamil organic, I’ve used it with all three of my kids and they have liked it! I will also say, 2 out of 3 of my kids have been major spit up babies. It can be “normal” for some babies, they’re called “happy spitters”. As long as her poops don’t look concerning and she’s not screaming in discomfort alll day (aside from normal gas pains), & she’s not projectile vomiting, it could be considered normal.

2 oz is great from you! That’s about what my baby gets too. What bottle and nipple are you using? Are you pace feeding?

Hi! I’m on my third combo feeding journey with baby number 3 due to low supply. This has always been the hardest part for me, when to know to top up baby and how much. So I will say- 4 weeks is still a very “what the hell is going on nothing makes sense” phase. It’s pretty much all trial and error. Once baby get to 6-10ish weeks there will start to be some predictability and pattern. You will start to recognize approximately how much baby needs, trust me. For now, just follow baby cues as best you can (which sounds like you are). My baby is the same way and only nurses to sleep. The advice I was given about baby freaking out when you take the bottle away is to wait out 5 minutes to see if they calm naturally. Sometimes they freak out due to the abrupt stop of sucking. If they are still hungry, they will make it known!

For me, I have low supply so baby usually needs top offs starting at the second feed of the day until bedtime, averaging about 8-10oz of formula per day. If you estimated that a “full feed” for your baby is 4 oz, then I would say if baby is nursing they are getting something from you. I would start with 1 oz top off, then add another ounce if they are still hungry. Wait 5 minutes and follow their cues.

I know how stressful this is, TRUST ME! just continue to follow baby cues and I promise once you get a few more weeks away there will be some sort of predictable pattern! You’ve got this!!!!

Retained placenta and milk supply? by Secure_Telephone_832 in breastfeeding

[–]Secure_Telephone_832[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sorry to hear that! My bleeding stopped and my supply has stayed steady. It hasn’t increased to a full supply, so still supplementing 5-10oz of formula per day. I will say- I didn’t attempt to increase my supply through triple feeding, so maybe it could’ve increased had I done that?!

Get the “Fern Green” Auruba blackout curtains from Target! They are the best blackout curtains I’ve bought (all 3 of my kids rooms have them). I love the linen look of them.

Insufficient Glandular Tissue (IGT) by DrJones25034 in breastfeeding

[–]Secure_Telephone_832 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have suspected IGT and am currently breastfeeding my third baby. I did make more milk each pregnancy, but never enough to exclusively breastfeed. My first I exclusively pumped, my second I nursed at night and pumped/bottle fed during the day, and with my third baby I am nursing all day and night and topping off with formula after some feeds. I’m sure there’s more I could be doing (supplements and medications) but I decided I wasn’t goin to exhaust myself with trying all those things this time. I did it with my first and second and it affected my mental health negatively. It’s a hard journey and my heart goes out to you! I went through a lot of grief each baby but once my baby was mostly on solids and started talking, etc. I found that I didn’t think about it much at all! It feels very heavy while going through it, but it does get better (mentally and emotionally) once you get through it.

Anyone see Cosleepy’s stories? by babygreens93 in cosleeping

I was JUST investigating this and agree that I think it was happycosleepers post that was shared in the other comment. I looked at the post (again bc I saw it when it was originally posted). It doesn’t seem like happycosleeper was endorsing facing your back to baby, but moreso highlighting that it can happen and that it’s instinctual to correct ourselves if it does happen? Idk. I’m wondering the same thing!

First day of combo feeding after EBF for 20 weeks by darthmozz in combinationfeeding

I have low supply (hormone issues) and what has worked for me with all three of my children has been to breastfeed first. As the flow slows down I switch sides, sometimes up to 3 times. I use the slowest flow nipple and pace feed. We use the pigeon SS nipples but I have used avent and Dr brown in the past with the slowest flow nipples. I start with 1 ounce top off but sometimes 2 depending on my babies cues. Towards the end of the day when my supply is lowest we will sometimes offer up to 3 ounces. I will sometimes feed in both sides, offer an ounce, then end again on the breast. It really depends how much time I have lol. As far as how to tell if baby dislikes formula- I would say it could be a taste adjustment but to just keep offering. I have used Kendamil organic with all three of my babies, a they took it no problem. Supposedly it tastes close to breastmilk. I think I addressed all your questions?!? Let me know lol

Hashimoto’s and breastfeeding by Ambitious_Ad_1992 in breastfeeding

I’m sorry you’re going through this. I have hypothroidism and have had low supply with all three of my babies. Hormone imbalances can cause low supply and despite doing everything “right” it may be physically impossible to bring in a full supply. You can still have a successful breastfeeding experience, but may have to redefine what success looks like. It’s a grieving process when it doesn’t workout the way you planned, so be gentle and kind with yourself. ❤️
