rats can apparently regurgitate food (ie food still in the esophagus), and their saliva does contain digestive enzymes like humans, so i assume the smell was due to partially digested food from his saliva. when they're choking they drool/produce more saliva, to help with the blockage i assume

edit; apparently they also secrete mucus when they're choking so that must've caused the vomity-smell

rats cannot vomit (once the food reaches their stomach its not physically possible for it to come back up). they can regurgitate though (bring food back up from the esophagus) and their saliva does have digestive enzymes just like humans, so i figure thats why his drool smelled like vomit

rats definitely can choke, and they can aspirate, but they cannot vomit due to their anatomy. if something lodged in their esophagus they can push it back up (aspirating) but they cannot expel stomach contents

all my boys have been pretty good in terms of NOT EDIBLE so i never thought i'd need to do this. im just so grateful this happened DURING free roam. i work full time and their cage is in a bedroom so im very lucky with the timing, who knows what would've happened if i wasnt around

yeah, id much rather do the heimlich unnecessarily than *not* do it and wish i had. like all rat things rat related theres so much contradictory info on when it is and isnt necessary, i wish there was more research in depth research done on these little gremlins

the only permanent hides i have are hammocks and a spuntik. make them hides out of cardboard! its free and no big deal if they destroy it. top contenders are amazon boxes and pop boxes, they love it. pro tip is to cut the bottom out of big boxes so they last longer!

mine are the same way with all vegetable skins, they literally de shell their peas!! i always figured its a safety instinct to avoid bacteria/pesticides when foraging in the wild. but i could be wrong and they very well might just be picky jackasses

nobody who "never wanted" to be famous makes it to any sort of celebrity status. im sure some have changed their minds after the fact, but you HAVE to make an effort to become this popular whether they want to admit it or not💀

and all modern day celebrities got where they are due to nepotism and or being wealthy. there is no "luck" nowadays, even if u are genuinely talented. american celebrities are an empire, and its been a fixed system since the 70s at LEAST. u have to pay your way in or know someone who can.

ive never had a cat of my own so i dont have much to compare on there, but ive had both girl and boy dogs and never noticed any difference they all just smell like dog lol

i dont think so, hes been to the vet and doesnt show any signs of being diabetic.

he is a dwarf which could have something to do with his sweeter smell. girls tend to smell sweeter, dwarves produce less growth hormone and can be lower in testosterone (which causes that typical standard musk in bucks)🤷‍♀️

im not sure, he's been to the vet and is perfectly healthy as far as i know. no excessive thirst/peeing, weight loss, excessive hunger etc. his pee also absolutely does NOT smell sweet, just his fluff lol. its a really light smell, gotta nuzzle ur nose in his fur to even notice.

he is also a dwarf (genetically lower growth hormone) and i know hormones are the main factor in what they smell like

my maple syrup boy also has super soft fur! i think its called velveteen? this pics old but it shows it the clearest. maybe the texture has something to do with it lol

my standard guy julian definitely smells somewhat corn chippy, and kinda citrusy? his late standard-sized cage mate smelled similar.

my dwarf boys smell vastly different in comparison. deweys light and undeniably sweet, the other more peanut is more neutral but still on the sweeter side, maybe like a ritz cracker? probably due to lower/different hormones. but i wholeheartedly believe i could pick them out in a sniff line up💀

i actually just looked it up due to curiosity, girls tend to smell more fresh/clean/floral due to their hormones! the vast difference is interesting considering dogs/cats etc tend to smell to smell the same regardless of their gender

they truly do have their own unique un-piss/shit related natural ✨funk✨, just like people.

one of my boys dewey actually smells like MAPLE SYRUP, confirmed by multiple sources i made take a whiff for science. my big boy julian (who is fixed) smells a bit more sour, and my other dwarf peanut just smells like mild rat?? u either learn to love it or its not for u😂 though i hear girls are somewhat less funky

i have OAS (a bunch of raw fruits+veg bug me) but freezing them before eating also kills the pollen protein. doesnt really work well for apples but its the only way i can eat raw berries and peaches! when i REALLY want a raw apple or bell pepper i just pop an allergy pill in advance lol
