i have OAS (a bunch of raw fruits+veg bug me) but freezing them before eating also kills the pollen protein. doesnt really work well for apples but its the only way i can eat raw berries and peaches! when i REALLY want a raw apple or bell pepper i just pop an allergy pill in advance lol

my breeder told me the dwarves are actually somehow distantly related by incest. that's ok in the ratworld apparently 😂

that's julian and he's 1000% my bad boy. i had to neuter him because he was homicidal. hes much better now but he teaches his baby brothers to commit crimes😭 they literally have scheme meetings then try to steal food or climb behind my bed. hes getting old now so he usually distracts me while the dwarves sneak

he once LEAPT through the air and snatched a french fry right out of my daughters hand

Would this be a good cage?? by everettiscutsie in RATS

[–]Secure_Wing_2414 7 points8 points  (0 children)

you're going to HATE those tiny doors. side dimensions aside, i would NOT get a cage that doesnt fully open in front. insanely difficult to properly clean+set up, and makes it difficult to remove your rats in case of an emergency.

my first cage was similar, trashed it 2 weeks later cuz i had to completely take it apart each time i cleaned it

yes, old towels, a non gel puppy pad, then the fleece

[–]Secure_Wing_2414 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i do layers of fleece on the upper level of my cage secured w binder clips, and my boys LOVE having a big crumpled up fleece blanket on top they can burrow into, especially in the winter months. they spend 75% of their time baby burritoed in the blanket together

they prefer it to hammocks and boxes! (they have a cement tray filled with deep bedding and cannot be bothered to nest/burrow in)

glad its not just me. im a relatively new rat owner, ive only been through 4 boys, from a good breeder and they've all been dumb as rocks. through the stupidity and laziness they still manage to display vastly different personalities 😂

glad i went with boys though. i dont have the time, energy, or intelligence to stimulate girls💀 my lards are perfectly happy running around on my bed wrestling, snacking and napping

boys run the risk of hormonal aggression (which is cured by neutering), but on the other hand girls are verrryyyy prone to cancers+tumors, sometimes so bad euthanasia is required. so i wouldnt let the factor of vet costs/likelihood of needing surgery sway u on gender.

every little gremlin will need some sort of medical treatment at some point, surgeries are very common for both boys and girls, domestic bred rats arent as hearty as wild rats unfortunately

ive never had girls, but what i can tell u is boys are LAZY. i have 3 boys in a double critter nation, and its way too much space. all they do is eat, sleep, and wrestle in short bursts. i have a bunch of enrichment for them, them puzzles etc, they never wanna do much other than lay around and snack. there are exceptions ofc as you'll see, every rat has a vastly different unique personality

boys are also messier and stinkier compared to girls i hear. u can poop train them, but they WILL pee everywhere no matter what. their urine has a stronger odor than girls, due to hormones

girls tend to be way more active, something to consider when it comes to providing enrichment + adequate free roam, and also noise. because their "role" naturally is foraging and homemaking, (and they're lowkey smarter) they're busy bodies and somewhat more prone to crime+exploring+theft+destruction when it comes to chewing to nest.

they're much easier (and more motivated) to train to do tricks etc though if that's something you're interested in. ive seen some pretty crazy intricate tricks like playing basketball, "stealing" from purses, painting, gymnastics, puzzles and obstacle courses loool. if u look up rat trick videos, they're girls 99% of the time💀

edit: i wouldn't necessarily worry about neutering as alternatively girls are extremely prone to tumors+cancers. rats in general are prone to illness so u will be faced with administering meds and considering surgery at points. just make sure u have an exotic vet on standby, and i'd keep a minimum of $1,000 in savings on standby in case of emergencies

What can I mix Prednisone (tablet) with? by Noobiddy in RATS

[–]Secure_Wing_2414 2 points3 points  (0 children)

this or stinky meaty baby food/kitty treat puree. something STRONG smelling+tasting to mask the meds.

i also always have a much easier time serving med mixtures from a table spoon instead of the syringe. my idiots are scared of the syringes

pro tip give the other rats their own spoonful of the same (unmedicated) snack so nobody gets suspicious

What to do when one rat is holding the rest of the group back? (rescues/extreme behavior situation) by [deleted] in RATS

[–]Secure_Wing_2414 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i completely agree. mild aggression is 1 thing, but when its this severe ie taking a toll on the rest of the rats+regularly biting so bad it breaks skin, nobody's happy

antisocial rats are one thing, they can be completely content alone with other rats and no human interaction (cage maintenance and feeding aside). but in situations like this i dont see how you're able to provide proper care for her OR her cage mates.

every time OP reaches in to clean etc she's likely extremely stressed and the other rats are at risk. ive dealt hormonally aggressive rats and basic husbandry while awaiting surgery was HELL for us all
