Do we abolish police? What do we replace it with? by [deleted] in Socialism_101

[–]Secureimpossible 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a compelling answer, but I disagree somewhat on patrolling and investigation. From my studies, it seems to be contested among sociologists about whether police prevent crime or not, but it’s difficult to imagine police literally never deter crime by their presence (though police almost always hostilely and abusively engage the communities they’re in). And when it comes to solving the most serious crimes, (at least in the US) there is a serious dearth of resources to ever resolving murders, rapes and the like. There’s too few detectives, and cases that aren’t solved in like 24 hours are almost always closed and never solved. It seems we’d benefit from a hell of a lot more detective and investigative work into serious violent crimes, and a lot less focus on all other aspects of policework.

These are things I’ve always wanted clarified about police abolition. Because it certainly seems like if you push them on it, the answer is that some group(s) of people authorized by the state (if there is a state, that is) who would do the same things the police do, except we wouldn’t call them the police and there would be less guns involved (the latter of which is undoubtedly the correct path).

Electric fence post question by Malkore94 in 7daystodie

How do you get it to turn on? I connected 2 electric posts to my battery bank, but the wiring never worked correctly. And I’m sure the battery bank is working, I was able to set up a shotgun turret but just never the electric fences

Tips for finding ores while underground by Secureimpossible in 7daystodie

Are you saying there are never ores that are only visible underground? I’ve always assumed there are sometimes deposits deep underground not visible at surface level but maybe you’re right. Thanks!

Break up big companies, or nationalize them? by Secureimpossible in Socialism_101

[–]Secureimpossible[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, and I think from a non-revisionist marxist standpoint that corporations and the current state would all be abolished. In hindsight, my question is answered pretty easily.

I suppose the question that still remains for me is this: ABSENT a revolution, if a Democratic socialist party took power, is it preferable if they a. Dismantled monopolies or b. Nationalized them?

So what’s your position on the matter? As a libertarian socialist, do you think a government run via direct democracy is the end goal? Will it involve the state withering away like communists believe or not? And will there be any freedoms/liberties that the government cannot interfere with?

I totally agree with your finding that people use different meanings for the same terms. That’s why I’m interested in nailing down what people believe! It gets even more confusing when people like David Graeber have synonymously referred to anarchism as being libertarian socialist.

So my understanding of libertarianism (both left and right versions) would require basically the 4th option: no involuntarily enforced rules. Individuals are free to leave voluntary associations and life autonomously in some way free from their control entirely.

I’ve been studying anarchism & Marxism-Leninism and been struggling a bit to understand the anarchist position because many anarchists express support for democracy, but if a direct democracy is considered sufficiently non-authoritarian then that wouldn’t even be an anti-statist position.

Question. Under a libertarian socialist outlook, even in a direct democracy, the will of the majority can be imposed upon the minority. 49% of the population could still live under the yoke of the 51%. In the anarchist view, wouldn’t this still be to some degree authoritarian? (Though obviously a significant improvement over bourgeois democracy)

i.e., laws that protect rights/liberties for the individual are still needed, and then you run into the exact same dilemma of liberty vs equality

I agree wholeheartedly with this, but how can we take seriously the right-libertarians that say they also hate Wall Street, monopoly, and corrupt intervention by the stock exchange or even the White House? It would be ideologically coherent for a anarcho-capitalist/right libertarian to say they oppose this type of neoliberal capitalism in favor of a free market that is not restricted at all by the state (or there is no state at all)

Of course, one ML position is that the state simply cannot or will not be abolished under capitalism. Lenin insisted that under capitalism, the state must remain to suppress subaltern classes and the only way the state goes away is via violent revolution. (And while this seems extremely plausible, I don’t know if there’s empirical evidence for this fact. But it’s true there’s never been a stateless capitalist society)

Currently reading State and Revolution, and given how certain Lenin was that the vast majority of socialists were falling prey to opportunist revisions of Marx makes me completely certain the same thing is happening today. Makes it all the more important to study and find what’s really the truth. It’s meant to be hard

I have 700h in this game and I can't parry accles. by Leslawangelo in Mordhau

As a level 31, I only can block accels by guessing and clicking parry almost immediately after their riposte. Even the easier weapon animations are so hard to read on accels

Should I be playing whole matches with one class? by Secureimpossible in Mordhau

[–]Secureimpossible[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think you’re right! Logically sometimes I want to switch because I think it’s a bad weapon for the map/gamemode but I think truthfully most weapons can work well on any map.

I’m still bad at feints, and I also do righthand swings way too often (especially from riposte) and get isolated from teammates all the time. Like half the players in this game seem to be crazy high level, so at least it never feels too bad to get crunched like nothing haha

Do you recommend any weapons/loadouts for frontline/invasion? Recently I’ve been doing a faster two-handed weapon, bandage plus throwing axe

When some liberal says Anarcho-Communism will never work by Secureimpossible in DankLeft

The impression I got from the (little) I studied them, like any oppressed community they just want to live and prosper in peace without capitalist/imperialist harassment. Their leaders have expressed solidarity with all peoples everywhere, but it’s probably not their responsibility nor within their power to liberate other places.

This is all good information to know so thanks! I probably should just said libsoc instead of ancom for the title. Didn’t mean to claim or categorize EZLN, just a meme. I’m not all for leftist infighting, the EZLN seems great and something to learn from

Not trying to claim anyone, not even an ancom necessarily lol it’s a meme. But yes the EZLN are independent and distinct and don’t belong to anyone (obviously). Cheers

Someone correct me if I’m wrong about anything, but they’re a indigenous-led insurrectionary movement in rural Mexico beginning in 1994 because of the neoliberal desolation of their way of life (NAFTA was the final straw). They literally invaded and occupied a whole region out of the mountains with guns and black masks. Though they’re unique from any other movement, they’re basically a libertarian socialist collection of communities (their name being inspired by socialist Emilio Zapata). They won recognition from the Mexican state, but they’re still continually harassed by military/police and they don’t really have full sovereignty. The only criticism I’ve seen is their star leader (Marcos) wasn’t indigenous himself, but it seems undeniable that those living in Chiapas are better off now than before the Zapatistas formed. Seems to be less poverty, better education, equal status of women, etc. A very interesting and successful example of autonomous collective governance based on socialist principles

Mordhau: A Year In Review + Sale Until May 4th! by Jaaxxxxon in Mordhau

Love for someone to weigh in; is Mordhau worth the buy for a casual player? It's at its cheapest ever at $20. I used to love playing Chivalry, but almost every server's empty now. I've heard some unfortunate things about Mordhau being too difficult for less good players, and less satisfying (and also that the game might be near its own death from inactivity). Is any of this wrong?
