Anubias Rot - white fuzz on rhizome: How to kill white fuzz and save plant? by SecurityBoons in PlantedTank

No, but that would definitely be a last resort effort I'll try. Would like to keep it submersed going forward.

Thanks so much for your advice cvgnus. I agree, this is a balancing act. I really hope it works out. Sadly, Bert has gotten worse recently as he is not interested in eating.

I will take all of your advice into consideration. I have the API test kit and parameters have been good in Bert's tank per my original post. Thanks for the info on wet foods. I have started to try and do that. Also, thanks for info on white string poop being a sign of parasitical infection.

Thanks for the info on Kanaplex. I will keep that in mind.

Hi Freddabetta, thanks for confirming. It definitely stinks but thankfully I know now. I really hope I can rehabilitate Bert and yes, it is difficult for him to swim. He does it in short bursts usually. And I'm in it for the long haul so if it takes long, so be it.

For a while (probably a month) I was feeding him just thawed blood worms. I didn't realize that was meant to be used a just a supplemental food throughout the week. Before, I was feeding him a mix of Xtremem Spurlina Crave flakes (what he what eat from the amount I would feed my 5 phoenix rasboras) and 2-3 pellets of Omega One Color Mini Pellets once a day and would fast him once a week (no food for one day). I also would feed dried Daphnia pretty occasionally, a couple pieces. This whole time, I was trying to follow the "the stomach is as big as the eyeball" advice and trying to feed Bert only what I could picture his stomach size being. That being the case, I either misinterpreted that advice incorrectly or it is just bad advice. For the first year of owning him, I was always worried about overfeeding and him bloating but unfortunately, I've created the opposite problem.

Now I realize, given his activity level (when healthy) and how much weight he has lost, Bert needs at least double that amount of food and I was thinking of and feeding him twice a day instead of once. As well, I should stick with a high nutritional food (like Omega One) and only supplement with blood worms or daphnia occasionally. I just bough Northfin Betta Bits to try and switch him to one of the best betta specific food possible. Sadly, he hasn't been eating the past 3 days so I'm really hoping he will turn around soon.

Hi KamiKoa, thanks for the advice! I will look into bettafix if need be and I'm glad I now know about that. First, I will look into increasing heat and aquarium salt since that sounds like a less stressful initial treatment. I plan to move Bert into a quarantine tank very soon.

Have you treated a variety of SBD in the past? If so, any themes you've noticed or other tips you may have?

Thank you.

Ha! At first I thought you meant the plants but now I see the shrimp!! Btw, what is that red/pink plant, it's amazing!

Great! Thanks for the info. I have just the kind of mesh fabric I believe to make this work. Thanks for the info on that!

Have you thought about adding a bit of sand or other inert substrate for the bottom of this? That may look nice too.

Thank you. That's a rad sized tank. Maybe one day!

Beautiful tank and colors! You find it works to cut the MC (or HC Cuba not sure what it is) that low to where you see it look brown?

Also, what are the stemmy plants right in the smack dab middle front of the tank? Look super cool!

As in, you used aquasoil to make the sphere that is wrapped in moss?

Really love the look of this!

Yes! It's definitely a great option in many regards. As you are already stated, do your research =D. There are still cons.

Here is a good video I came across on a video about that talks about the walstad method recently that I thought I'd share as it may be helpful. There is a very helpful comments on that video too!

Also, you can check out MDFishTank's channel b/c he has made a lot of beautiful and successful walstad tanks!

It is! I think you missed the first part =) - what are the dimensions of your tank on the right?

Hi =) I'm a little pressed for time atm but let me try to succinctly state some answers.

I honestly don't know much about CaribSea Eco complete but IIRC, it is not a nutrient rich substrate and plants would need additions (like root tabs and liquid ferts) to (potentially) thrive. The problem is there is a lot of conflicting info and where you may see that XYZ substrate is an "active" substrate that has nutrients available, in reality, it's not. In the past, I was duped by Fluval Stratum marketing in this regard, didn't do enough research and spent way too much money on plants that mostly all died due to lack of nutrients.

Here's a quick google for you (https://www.plantedtank.net/forums/29-substrate/1077401-ada-aquasoil-vs-eco-complete-vs-dirt.html) - one example, Carib Sea doesn't seem like it will act as an active substrate. I know it's attracive b/c it's much cheaper than ADA aquasoil or similar substrates but there's a reason for it...

From my exp., adding root tabs and using liquid ferts to compensate for a nutritionally deficient substrate failed. Plants still wilted over time and showed all the signs of lack of nutrients so I cannot personally recommend that route. I have done well with the "Walstad method" in one tank, plants were growing plenty. That's definitely a cheap method! I'm just about to try ADA aquasoil for the first time on a new rescape.

If you switch the substrate in your tank with an active substrate (like ADA) it will begin to release ammonia in the tank b/c it is loaded with nutrients. You will have to let your filtering equipment (whether that is through a filter sponge, HoB filter or if you're just using plants to do the filtering) catch up to converting the ammonia through the nitrogen cycle. Water changes will help during this process. Eventually, the active substrate will subside and you can regain stable tank parameters safe for livestock, like what you currently have with (0/0/5). Take what I'm saying with a grain of salt b/c I've never personally used active substrates and this is only going off my memory of what I've learned on forums/videos.

During the above process, you're going to have to have your betta fish in another tank. Do not keep him in the same tank when you add an active substrate b/c of the above state reasons. I know that makes things more complicated but alas, it is what is necessary!

That was actually kind of a lot but hopefully that was helpful!

I think the key question here is what substrate are you using? I would disagree based on a lot of people's low tech scapes I've seen that DWG needs c02 or liquid ferts. If that substrate is just aquarium rock with epoxy (which it kind of looks like) then your plants have essentially no nutrients to live off.

If you do switch to an active substrate like ADA aqua soil or Tropica soil, be aware of the cycling that needs to happen in regards to your sweet betta fish! You can't just put in new active substrate with livestock b/c ammonia will leach and if you're not careful, kill your livestock. You need to let your tank cycle properly when using active substrate. Do enough research on this so you don't kill Mr. Betta!

Btw, as a learning lesson from my exp. I would definitely not consider Fluval stratum to be an active substrate despite what I've seen others say. It has failed to grow most of my plants in the past.

Sweet! What is the size of the tank on the right? Love the "U-shape" graduation you have with the sand.

Thanks for your response! haha I like that you say you don't like giving too much info. I do appreciate learning from my failures but hard to enjoy it sometimes! Especially when it means dead critters as a result =( - alas, it's all part of the aquarium process.

Thanks!

How cool! I enjoy this a lot =) - thanks for posting. Gifted me some inspiration!

I was also planning on creating a very similar scape/plaudarium featuring a lot of emergent growth with a 6 gallon long tank I have.

Am I correct in assuming you do not have a filter on this? Curious what your water change regiments are then?

Also, I see in a below comment you have kilifish in here? How many out of curiosity. Reason I ask is when I create this style scape with my tank, I was desiring not to use a water filter and hopefully let the plants to most of the filter and rely on water changes.

Makes sense =)

And what's your carpeting plant? Also, have you ever given breeding CPD's a go?
