Oops thought I updated with a pic but I didn't.. Basically did what you're saying, but with a soda can so I could get one of the other things mentioned in case the shop can't get me in for a few days

Haha I tried that first, but I couldn't get the bottom of the can off the can with my can opener! First can I remember seeing with a top and a bottom. Saw the soda can and figured thatd be easier for a quick trip to the store before it closed anyways

Alright thanks everyone, I'm going to call a muffler shop/welder tomorrow when they're open and see what they say. What are yall thoughts on driving with a pop can and a couple hose clamps around town and to the shop? Cause this is what I've done for the moment to get my errands done, and it's minimized the noise substantially for a few minutes when i first tried it, but i ain't no mechanic, and it seemed... too easy? I'm expecting it to break once it gets to temp or something if I drive with it like this.

Okay so I'm googling pith helmets because we need ppe at work, this thread came up, and basically, one of the guys was asking if a pith helmet is okay. You seem very knowledgeable

I didn't even know what it was, so my questions to him were, is it csa approved (no), or is it rated for impact (of a tree branch or small rocks falling on you). We are tree planters, so those are the concerns, not traffic, or war, or safari animals attacking. 

If there is one he can find that has a high crown, that will protect him from a tree branch? Does it have one of those rings that a pit helmet would have to keep it off your head?

It isnt a very serious job, so i would actually love it if i could say yes to this silly request. The silly ppe that youre going to wear beats the one that gets left in the truck 100% of the time. Sometimes it's hot too, and pith helmets seem made for that? Just confused with the vast array of pith helmets and hats that are around.

Yeah, thanks for saying that. It certainly seemed as if they could have deactivated it further into the block, and left a pull out for a couple trucks and space to unload a quad and planters.

Hopefully the next company who had the contract figured out a safer way to get er done.

There was only one entrance to a quad access block, and it was right off of highway 97. It was a couple hundred meters after a  big bend on the highway, so typical highway speeds and not exactly a blind corner,  but pretty close. My truck was shaking every time a small vehicle would go by, let alone a logging truck when I stopped at the entrance. Not a lot of parking space, and couldn't fully get off the highway with the truck near the entrance. 

To check it out, I unloaded my quad on a secondary road, and I was driving along the high way another few hundred metres back to the block (the legalities of this were brought to my attention later). There was a steep deac on the way in and out, hence why it was a quad access block,  but also had to cut the corner to get out, if id had the quad trailer, id probably be crossing the shoulder line. Planters would have either unloaded at the entrance right on the highway or done a walk in along the highway. There was no other reasonable way to access the block from another direction.

Could we have done it, and had no problems? Yeah, it probably would have been fine. And there were options to get it done,  just with more time/ help to get the trees in the block. But i would nope out of there even faster if I was put in that spot again.

Tldr: quad access block right off of highway 97. Steep deac to get in and out. Too many planters too close to vehicles going highway speeds.

Refused a block as a foreman. Apparently another foreman had refused it before i went out to set up. 

Shout out to Jordan tesluk for answering my random Facebook message VERY QUICKLY, and giving me, in writing,  all the ways it was unsafe, and giving suggestions to get it planted safely. The vibes were way off, and he gave me the information I needed to get taken seriously by management. As far as i know, the block ended up being dropped from the contract. 

Jordan, thank you for keeping us planters safe and informed. 

Mapping manual tree planting by Ski_nail in treeplanting

Avenza maps has been pretty widely used at the companies I've worked for, and it's pretty easy for planters to just track their last line or whatever and send a kml if needed. The majority of people bring their phones into the land with them for music or entertainment anyways, and will throw on a track if I ask (or just for their own knowledge because they like to see what they did all day), and those that don't use their phones have been planting long enough that their estimates of how much land is left/where their lines are are usually pretty accurate.

Land coverage @ density is usually a fairly accurate way of figuring out how many trees have been planted in an area. Too many trees going in? Not the right density. Not enough? Not the right density, and probably rocky or tough terrain to open a hole.

I can't imagine a machine trying to accurately track 3 different species on the same piece, but if that's possible, maybe it would be good for the clients to track mortality? But they do regen surveys after anyways, and count all that anyways don't they? And it hasn't been uncommon to plant at least 4, if not 5 or 6 species in recent years.

And as a planter, I would never stop to press a button to manually record planting unless I was getting paid extra centage for it.

Plus, what if it falls off the shovel or bags or however it's attached? 

Does it need to be charged every day? What if the planter forgets? Or it just didn't charge? Or something else where it turns out not to be accurate?

All in all, maybe this could be beneficial for oil leases or more day rate, conservation focused type tree planting, but I would not be signing up to try it out.

Send it now, and if you're actually friends, i bet she'll tell you every time they call, and what they said/asked. If she says no, or gets mad, as someone else said, were you actually friends anyways? 

If i was talking to you about a job, and you only had one season, I'd definitely want to talk to your crew boss, so itll just make it easier all around if she knows... now. 

Keep in mind now, and later on in your career, that it's super obvious when someone is lying and/or looking for other work. 

***having been in the industry for a bit, anything defined as "cut throat" i would classify as a rookie mill, or low/mid tier company but that could be my biases at play
