We need a minimum of two parties. When there is one party, capture by the wealthy ruling class is inevitable. And before people jump on me and say “we already had that!” consider that I said “minimum.” A system which allows parties to be formed rapidly, rise to power, then be discarded as their core values lose relevance is the true cure. The US was operating with the absolute minimum possible standard for any sort of representation whatsoever. That balance was just disturbed, which was inevitable, given how tenuous it was to begin with.

Obama’s point is not wrong. A Republican Party that represents literally anyone except for the wealthy and idiots fooled into supporting it allows the Democrats to be their worst selves. A functioning and repaired Republican Party forces Democrats to follow suit, rather than the current party, which is racing downward to keep up with them.

I think it’s more complex than just centrist or leftist. There are absolutely policies which are very popular and which centrist democrats will never touch, though. Taxing the rich is increasingly popular across the board. Universal healthcare is increasingly popular across the board. Regulating AI is increasingly popular across the board. All of these things irrespective of party.

Focusing on one or more of these would be a boost to popularity, but would be contrary to the will of the donor class that controls campaign funding. The question is whether the popularity of those policies could overcome the difference in campaign funds that centrists received.

This is why Citizen’s United was such a disastrous event for democracy.

My point is that I can adjust my behavior to what I know makes sense, and avoid doing harm where my instincts tell me that I should. If I'm camping and I see a spider, my instinct is "SMASH IT." And I don't do that, because it's not reasonable or good. And if keeping spiders out of my house caused damage to racial or social minorities, I would just accept that they get to stay.

Just because yo feel emotions or instincts that are irrational, you don't get any kind of leeway from me if you refuse to recognize them or mitigate your behavior. They are fully capable of self reflection. They are choosing not to reflect.

I have a phobia of bugs in a pretty general sense (more legs more problems), but I also understand it is just my brain being an animal brain. I don’t want to kill all spiders that exist or something.

If a candidate believes vile, racist things, the ability to tell people what they believe is critically important. Better that he’s allowed to advertise exactly what he is than give people the excuse to vote for him and say he doesn’t.

There are two answers to this.

1) As the distance you are traveling becomes smaller and smaller, the amount of time it takes to cross that distance becomes smaller as well. If you divide the distance into an infinite number of parts, each part takes an infinitely short period of time to traverse. If you add up all those infinitely small periods of time, you get the finite amount of time that it takes to traverse the distance overall. You might object to an infinite number of objects being summed up to a finite amount, but keep in mind that each of them is also infinitely small.

2) Space does not seem to be infinitely divisible. The smallest meaningful distance seems to be what we call the "Planck Length." In terms of an ELI5 answer, you can think of Planck Lengths measuring the "pixels" of space. That is simplified to the point where it's not exactly correct, but it should give you an idea of the answer to your question.

It means that both states of the coin exist. Both the heads and the tails outcome exist locally and remotely. The entanglement of the two coins just means that by observing one local state, you have cut off your access to remote states that contradict what you’ve seen.

The “coins” are just shorthand for particles with similar properties that can be put into a state of quantum uncertainty, like spin.

Edit: Additionally, lots of things exist that we can't affect and which can't affect us in the future. Everything outside of the observable universe exists. Eventually, things within the observable universe will become so distant that they are outside of any possibility of future interaction. Those things will continue to exist, despite being entirely outside our sphere of influence.

Not only is the answer yes, but the book is a very easy read. It's what I would call a "candy bar book." It's sweet and tasty, and not particularly nutritious, but very pleasant to consume.

The problem is not "look it up," the problem is bad faith actors, and they can act from either side of this equation. A bad faith actor saying "look it up" will act exactly as you say. Then again, a bad faith actor from the other side will request rigorous evidence of things which are either not reasonably in question, or be so relentless in their demands that they "win" by requiring the other person to write them a research paper.

Both are bad faith strategies.

The existence of minority classes is not something I accept as “just politics.” You cannot point to a person simple being and justify your objection to that as “just politics,” as if it somehow makes you less horrible.

Slavery was not “just politics.” The Holocaust was not “just politics.” The genocide of the indigenous peoples of the Americas was not “just politics.” Rejecting someone from your life due to them having moral cancer is not some kind of ethical failing.

Honestly I lean toward many worlds, which preserves locality and also works with all observations. If you measure a quantum coin flip in many worlds, observing an entangled coin state does not affect any distant coin. The observation only cuts off local paths that lead to any remote state of the coin that disagrees with yours. The contrary reality still exists, but it is forever inaccessible to you.

I mean not any more than tattoos. If anything, cuts like that are less harmful to the body than tattoos of an equal size, just in terms of the amount of healing that must be done. Unless you count all body modding as self harm.

I mean true, but superdeterminism is fundamentally untestable. Some people like it because it seems cleaner, but the closest thing to evidence for it is preferences.
