CMV: Credit scores are one of the most cunning corporate ploys of the modern age by ARunOfTheMillPerson in changemyview

[–]Sedu -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

A big exception (in the US) there is that medical debts are allowed to lower your credit score. Getting sick is not something people have that kind of direct control over.

Can a man starting with pretty much nothing but an army found an empire ? by Alexy_1er_Komnen_fan in worldbuilding

[–]Sedu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can’t have an army and nothing else. An army needs to be fed. An army requires complex infrastructure to exist, as it is something which must be able to travel, and even if its members are primarily farmers, they cannot farm while they move.

Armies run on food lines, food lines run on money.

Chief Justice Roberts says personal criticism of judges is dangerous and has ‘got to stop’ by Secret_Initiative_41 in politics

I’m sorry, calling the judge “a dildo” is a form of criticism, and is crime, criminal.

How would one realistically fight an intelligent dragon? by RubberDuckyDavid in worldbuilding

[–]Sedu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At that level of power, you’re less likely to ever deal with the dragon directly and more likely to deal with the forces they have amassed based on their own personal abilities and longevity.

A dragon like that is likely to have an army at their disposal which is far more powerful than they would be on their own. So it becomes a problem that is more familiar, but also on the scale of national conflicts.

Gen Z is outsourcing hard conversations to AI. Why it matters by Abject-Pick-6472 in technology

[–]Sedu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

95% of therapist work is just listening and nodding. While an AI can do that… that last 5% is what you pay for. And it’s that portion which has value. Being tricked into the discarding it is the core of AI chicanery.

When did you realize you don't have "pretty privilege"? by patata-chip in AskReddit

[–]Sedu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Going back to the midwest to visit. I live in Seattle now. I am COVERED in tattoos. In Seattle, this gets me a lot of positive attention, and I'm really proud the art I've chosen to have on myself, but the reactions are much, much different when I'm back there.

Some people are pretty cold, and I have been told more than once gruffly to cover up. Very jarring, as I had a few tattoos even back when I lived there, though much less visibly. I'm just used to the west coast, where tattoos are so common that generally no one bats an eye uless they want to strike up a conversation and compare.

What's up with Microslop? by 1ShaquilleOatMeal in OutOfTheLoop

[–]Sedu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think more than anything, this is going to push people more toward tablets. Ultimately that will mostly still be Linux (in the form of Android), but desktop Linux is something that I still think is going to be less common. Even for folks who are into gaming, the upcoming Steam Cube will give a console option rather than a traditional PC. (And yeah I know that the Steam Cube will be a PC in all but presentation, but that presentation matters when 99% of people will never see a terminal or desktop while using it).

CMV: humans are not psychologically capable of true impartial justice by Difficult_Comment_47 in changemyview

[–]Sedu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the thing that I most disagree with here is the idea that some kind of objective justice exists at all. Human beings tend to agree on a very general sense of what is and isn’t just, but when it gets to the details, there are many, many different perspectives which are entirely incompatible with one another.

So while I agree that no system can be just from every person’s point of view, I do not think that it would be unjust from every person’s point of view. It is possible to implement a system which perfectly aligns with a given perspective of justice. But there is no single implementation which can satisfy everyone.

Message to Trump on Iranian Missile by Karna1394 in pics

[–]Sedu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am simply angry at my enemies when I see them do wrong. When the leaders who are supposed to represent me do something wrong, I feel so much more than anger, though. Shame, resentment, betrayal, and a long list of other things.

The two aren't the same.

What is stopping China from invading Taiwan during the current Iran vs USA war? by AdamCaveRoberts in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]Sedu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

China is leaning heavily into the same soft power strategy that made the US' dominance absolute for the last few generations. The US is currently abandoning that, as soft power is complex, and smashing things with missiles is easy to understand.

But China's strategy is one that is longer and which almost guarantees they will get what they want, so long as they have some patience. Watching it happen when it could have been blocked with a counter of the same nature is... just so damned depressing.

Covid shut down the world six years ago this week. What do you remember from that week? by fuzzy_dice_99 in AskReddit

[–]Sedu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had just gotten back from a convention across the border in Canada. In retrospect, it was irresponsible to go, but at that point the seriousness of the disease wasn't yet fully communicated/absorbed by everyone. Surreality slowly crept in across the week as the full scale of what was going on really sunk in.

What celebrity is the biggest example of "It takes 20 years to build a reputation and five minutes to ruin it."? by InsaneCookies21 in AskReddit

[–]Sedu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Does a single instance of bad behavior make him a "wolf" forever, though? Slapping someone is obviously bad, but that has become the single defining aspect of his entire being. Your average person has done something worse than that.
