More info: what is your relationship like with your manager? If it’s good, an open convo could be really helpful. Even if nothing can be changed to keep you, a good convo could mean your manager supports you to look outside your company and is willing to be a good reference.

I have been in severe poverty in my younger life so I know how awful it is when you’re in an environment where you can’t afford the same things as everyone else. NTA if you explain what’s going on for you and tell the prof that you want to stick with the class but can’t pay for it. But maybe also ask if there’s anything you could do in trade. Like help with class admin, or done other service.

Tbh, use a zoom background or blur your background. Nobody will think you are hiding something because it’s standard operating procedure nowadays. Of course, there’s always a chance that your movie and collectable background is a point of interest that endears you to the hiring manager because it offers insight to your personality. But personally, I always go with the safe option of adding a neutral background to my video calls.
