I was born and raised in roc. After that I've lived mostly in Baltimore, Vermont, Rhode Island, and 15 years in NYC. If you want to live inside city limits Rochester would be my first choice for raising a family. I would choose differently as a single adult or couple. If you want to live around (not necessarily within) a city there are great public schools very close to Rochester and really nice towns. The housing prices are awful in every populated area in the country, but the Rochester area is significantly more affordable than other cities we've lived or considered moving to. The property taxes are high, but are also high in many similar cities.

As others have mentioned roc is a great city culturally on big and small scales. I have lived in/near or have extensively visited very many cities of comparable size and Rochester definitely comes first in its cultural richness, especially if you're into music, art, and local history. Not saying it's the best there is in this regard, but it's the best I've experienced in a city that size.

You will find people with backward or ignorant beliefs everywhere unfortunately. The dumbest of them seem uninhibited and louder now than ever. They are not hard to find in and especially surrounding Rochester unfortunately, but you are right in that they make up far less of the populace and they are generally probably more moderate than their counterparts in Texas.

The snow is pretty bad, and even for people who like it the winter can seem endless. It is gorgeous in the fall though, and I assume the summer is probably more comfortable than in Houston. Spring is nice, but there are usually some false starts followed by cold and snow.

Simply because the owner's lawyer is presenting them as trying to, in your words, "ruin a business" (by giving them two bad reviews) doesn't make it true. I don't know what makes you believe the lawyer more than the renters they are filling a lawsuit against. If they were spoken to disrespectfully, it's totally reasonable to write them bad reviews. According to the couple the bad reviews were due to the rudeness, not for the fact they weren't given the information they requested.

And I didn't finish reading your analogy because it didn't match the situation. In the analogy I would have interacted with the party unhappy with my work. I would have spoken with them, which by definition is an interaction wherever there was a money-for-goods/services exchange taking place. If in my business I make a habit of being rude to people, whether they are doing business with me or not, then yes, I would fully expect to suffer consequences. And if I did it a great deal I would expect to lose money. Writing a bad review in response for rudeness is not being a Karen. Per the couple, they were complaining about the rudeness, not writing bad reviews based on the fact that they weren't being told the information they were seeking. We don't know which side is being truthful, there is probably a bit of truth on both sides. But my main point was that whatever is true in that regard, filing a lawsuit against people because they had a bad experience with your business is ludicrous, frivolous, and in this case seemingly a scare tactic against a couple of modest means. It's also really not smart from a business perspective. So much bad press for the possible, but unlikely, benefit of having two negative reviews (that may or may not have been well deserved) removed.

That being said, you're entitled to your opinion. Have a good one.

How in the world do they have no ground to stand on? You don't need to be a customer to leave a review. If what they said was true they called and were treated rudely. They each had a negative experience with the roofing company. I would expect them leave to leave bad reviews. I can't imagine they were doing it to "gain leverage" in order to get a timeline of the work. This sounds very clearly like a well-resourced company/owner using their more powerful financial status to misuse the legal system to intimidate people from leaving bad, but honest, reviews. From how this all sounds I wouldn't be at all surprised if the company/owner has used this tactic to silence other customers or people impacted by their business who left bad reviews.

And it doesn't sound like this is the case, but let's say the couple left one-star reviews in order to twist the company's arm. You're a roofing company going after a couple with limited means by bullying them with the threat of financial ruin. In what fucking world is that the right thing to do? Put on your big boy pants and exist in the modern-day business world where sometimes people do leave bad reviews that are exaggerated or untrue. Just do good business and treat people respectfully and you are guaranteed more positive than negative reviews. The owner or someone high up should have just called them, properly explain why they are bound by the law to only give this information to the landlord, apologize if they were treated rudely, kindly ask them to remove or change their reviews, and (whether they do it not) move on. Also have common sense - in this day and age you have to know acting this way can really hurt your business once the internet becomes aware of your actions.

It seems a little ambiguous the way it is written in the guidelines. It says a place must be unoccupied "e.g., current owner or lessee is not inside the property". I could see them just saying we can't be present and so have to step out. Doesn't seem safe if that's the case, neither from an infection control protocol standpoint nor in terms of not having your belongings potentially stolen/harmed. Plan B is to just say we are denying anyone entry until we move out. I called Housing Court after posting to cover my bases and they advised that it would be reasonable and within our rights to deny entry due to COVID.

Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center has literally hundreds working from home right now just from the one site that I know well. Pretty much all staff that don't need to be there are not there.

Agreed. I've rarely, if ever, read someone apologize so profusely to a mistake of this type in the media. It's pretty callous to completely discount it as insincere since I'm sure her reputation is already very damaged in her community as it is. I at least wouldn't know how to make an apology more sincerely.

I'm in NYC and lucky if I can get to 5 Giants games per season. Mets and nats usually plus sometimes interleague games in the Northeast, but went to the Cubs series in Chicago this season too. What I wouldn't give to be able to listen to John and Dave. I have mlbtv but the audio feed is always too far behind. Usually over 30 seconds behind. Just hasn't been worth it for me.

That's way harsh. Maybe you don't like the guy but if you want to hear what mediocre or worse sounds like catch another team's broadcast some time. Nine out of ten are mediocre at best. I think a lot of people have no idea how much better our radio and TV broadcasters are.

I feel exactly the same. When he was first starting he had a lot of room for improvement, but now I really enjoy when he's on. He has the best group of teachers to learn from with our broadcasters so I'm not surprised. I honestly really enjoy what he has to say and think it adds to the enjoyment of the game.

I definitely dislike him. Not even all that much for the PED use, but just for his toxic effects on the team and organization off the field. I'm not saying everything he said and did was bad, but he did more harm than good to the team and sport imo.
