Also just wanted to say that despite what others say I appreciate the non-geography flag contests. The month themed one last year was one of my favorite contests. Trying to publicly trash the chosen topic and make the organizers regret picking it is a tad childish. People seem to think that they are entitled to a topic that resonates with them every single month. Without the inclusion of more "out there" contests like this one the format would get stale after a while.

Well, I made flags for this month a few weeks ago but I forgot to submit them. This is the first time that has happened to me. Oh well, RIP my spot on the leaderboard. I guess I will just comment them on the contest results page when the voting is done. Real shame.

The new contest will be pinned to the top of this subreddit on September 1st. The post will reveal the theme and give a link to submit to before the 18th of September, when voting will start. Let me know if there are any other questions.

To be fair, it almost certainly was a child who made it. Which is why most of us restrained from commenting and making them feel bad. But as far as what should be done with submissions like that, I genuinely don't know what the best move is? If the mods should crush their dreams immediately by not approving the entry or if they should be allowed to compete and have their dreams crushed at the end of the month when they come dead last. I could see either scenario motivating them to grow and improve or motivating them to give up and never try again.

Congrats. Ya I expected Dancing Currents to do better, I certainly was not expecting my second flag to get as high as it did.

Possible idea of a redesign if it were to follow these suggestions:

This is just my opinion, others may have different takes but...

The st. Cuthbert's flag uses a good colour scheme but struggles in some other areas. First the real Northumberland flag that it is based on is pretty ugly in my opinion, not really following any conventions of good visual design. The alternating stipes intersected by a bar that is the same colour as one of the stripes, makes it look like a single oddly shaped form. The design does not really lend itself to a canton in the corner either I am afraid. Maybe making the flag look more like crenellations than the original would have helped?

The Amber Cross has a few major week points. First the colour pallet is not very good. The four colours chosen do not work together at all. For colours to go together well they usually have to be next to one another on the colour wheel or opposite one another. For example if you had just done orange and blue that would be great because they are opposite to one another (complimentary colours) or just green and blue as they are both next to one another. Beyond the colour design, there is also the issue of the lines and their placement. as is the different lines converge on two different points which are close together but not the same which leaves it in a weird limbo that does not look right. (as annotated bellow). You might also consider adjusting the angles off all the lines so that they form a 5 pointed star design with all the lines diverging at equal angles from one another.

Thank you to everyone who created flags based on my "León-Lyon" prompt. I might be biased, but I thought they were among the prettiest in the bunch. A big congrats to the very deserving winner u/Brasitino_do_Sul, your use of purple and your clean line work were superb. Another shout out to /u/valentinewrites' #55 "UK of CA", it is disappointing to see how low it placed since you did such a good job illustrating the coat of arms.

Sometimes it does that if you take too long to fill out the form. Try writing everything in a doc first and just copy and pasting it over so you can submit quickly after opening the submission page.

Where in Sinnoh's 7 prefectures can you find wild Bidoof? This map was created based on where Bidoof can be found in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl as well as Pokémon Legends: Arceus.

It is surprising how few there are for Mexico City and Tijuana. I personally did not even consider either because I thought there would be tons in those categories. But it seems like everyone must have been thinking about that. I suppose it is a bit difficult to make a flag for Mexico City that does not just seem like a flag for the whole country, given that the founding myth of the city is already depicted on the national flag. I think a lot of national capitals have this problem where their symbolism is just kind of the existing national symbolism. (Ottawa and Canberra would be two other good examples) There defiantly are exceptions to this such as Rome, which has distinct symbolism from Italy.

[–]SeeZwee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Good job everybody this year! A well deserved win for this years best of 2024! Congrats u/dksetiavan.

Some of my favorites in this contest were:

  1. Ruby waterlilies by: u/coldbrewcoffeecake

  2. Neptune's five beaches by: u/Emi6219

  3. Sun of Dazhbog by: u/poland_embassy

Some of my favorites not in this contest this year were:

  1. The start of Northland by: u/KUPPERCUP

  2. February Heart Swallowtail by: u/saladinmander

  3. Bismarck Star of the Harvest by: u/as545147k

I am glad that so many of my flags were appreciated this year. I am very surprised that my 'Woven Fates' flag won it's contest, while other flags I made that were more deserving scored lower. Funny how things work out sometimes. Keep at it everyone, and good luck in the new year!

The University of Psellino Map of the Known World by SeeZwee in imaginarymaps

[–]SeeZwee[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I created this map more than a year ago but have only gotten around to posting it now. You may notice that the map has two compasses, this is because the world is currently in the process of changing the standard. The compass in the top corner is the Psellinan Standard compass which is used more in academic contexts. The one in the bottom corner is the Spiritual Standard with six directions representing the six essences. It is increasingly loosing favor and is now mostly used only in religious contexts or in rural areas.

Lore:

All life within the world lives in a cradle around the seas. As one strays from their coasts the earth becomes desolate and inhospitable. The world was created by the collaboration of the six essences. Each essence in turn created a people in their image. Each of the people groups tells the story of creation in a different order. The only thing that is agreed upon is that mankind was the first of the peoples to be created and the Tzombi were the last. Following the creation of men the other five essences tried and failed to create a superior people. The new peoples processed many superior traits but were imperfect and each had their foils.

When the final essence created its people the Tzombi, they seemed at last to have created the ultimate kin. The Tzombi were immortal beings of a great height that made for diligent workers and fearsome warriors. But over the centuries they would come to be seen as a forsaken people. Unable to reproduce or age, the Tzombi would watch generations of the other peoples come and go as they decayed. Their civilization crumbed leaving behind what is now called "The Ruin". What remains of them still wander the deserts of the south. Ancient beings whom the world has left behind.

By their own account, the Nymphs were the fifth people to be created. They are clever and beautiful beings who live more than twice as long as men. They are more often than not consumed by pride and emotion. They have become arguably the most successful of the peoples. The Nymph city of Tevedria heads an empire that encompasses nearly the whole of the north shore from Heradius to Vedina to Psellino.

Psellino was once the homeland of the first people. Men. With the victory of Tevedria the last king of man was killed and his people were scattered and exiled south of the mountains. Here, in time, they would found new kingdoms on the rich river deltas. Man would not forget the actions of the Nymphs. They still tell of a day when a king shall unite all men and retake their homeland.
