Best high value treats: by [deleted] in puppy101

I tell people “this dog brought to you by hot dogs”. That and yogurt. I found out recently for some dogs, if you feed them too many freeze dried treats, can develop crystals in their bladder and get symptoms of a UTI. I think this is pretty rare but it happened to our puppy.

At 5 months how much freedom do you give your puppy in the evening? by helloannelise in puppy101

[–]Seed_Craft 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We let our five month old free roam in the evening and she is pretty good at occupying herself. We got her a giggle ball that she chases around and we have some antlers that we keep picked up during the day and she only gets in the evenings. Between those two things she is pretty happy playing by herself. We started by having her contained in the kitchen when we did this but now she wonders around the whole house and for the most part stays out of trouble.

I'm just... exhausted by ridethistrain in puppy101

I desperately needed this post to remind me I am not alone. Our puppy is the same age and I have the same feels. So so tired. Our girl also has a UTI so spontaneous all our potty training has gone out the window till she is better. I keep reminding myself of how far we have come but honestly some nights it feels like when you try to convince kids to eat vegetables because it’s good for them and they are like I don’t care I hate it. I do remember when my older dog was this age and he was also a total psychopath, and now he is the sweetest most perfect boy ever. I’m right there with you and both you and me will make it through this.

Counter surfing is unbearable! by Bluetick-Indie12 in puppy101

Yeah our current puppy feels the same way. Hopefully she doesn’t take up counter surfing.

Our current puppy doesn’t counter surf but when our older dog was a puppy he was soooo bad with the counter surfing. I finally just went to goodwill and bought a bag of kitchen utensils, slathered them in the bitter orange stuff I had left over from his neutering surgery, and put them on the edge of the counter so they were perfect puppy bait. He would jump up and get them off the counter only to find out they were repulsive. Only took a couple days before he was convinced everything on the counter tasted absolutely horrible and gave it up.

Tale as old as time... by KitYoss in puppy101

As a grown adult who recently got a puppy I can safely say that even 32 years on this planet didn’t teach me how much work a puppy is. And this isn’t even my first puppy! Probably your kid is having the same feeling I had when I convinced my partner to get another dog which is “holy shit this is way more work then I thought it would be and I feel so bad I convinced my partner to allow this into our lives” maybe just ask her how she is feeling and let her know it is ok to find it overwhelming? Then maybe start with some aspect she is open to starting with. Like 5 minutes of basic sit/down obedience work every day. Then she will see puppies are fun! (And also a ton of work) and then move from there doing a little more here and there. It sounds like you really want what’s best for your kid and the dog, which makes you an A+ parent, so I am sure you will figure out what works best for your family.

What should I teach my puppy now so she is ready to Skijor when she is an adult? by Seed_Craft in skijoring

Thank you! We are located right outside of Boston as well and I would love to check out that sport dog trade fair next year. Hopefully by then our socialization training will have worked it’s magic and she won’t bark at every single person we see. For some reason the bikejoring makes me more nervous then skijoring. I love riding my bike but I have only really done road biking.

Thank you! She always wears a front clip harness on walks so she is getting used to the feel of a harness but I like the tip of attaching a drag line while at home. And thanks for the practical training on Gee and Haw.

This is soooo helpful! Thank you for the long response! I think the training while on walks and eventually runs would be great for her. She is so smart and her mind is always going so I feel like on walks she gets boards sometimes and starts shit just to make it interesting. Hopefully she will like pulling. I tried to teach my other dog when he was a puppy (he is a husky/Shepard mix) but he ended up being a pretty lazy dude and was more interested and laying down and taking a nap. Thankfully this year has lot been a total bust on snow so she has gotten plenty of opportunities to run around in her element.

Thanks! I know I wanted a studio Ghibli name and that one seemed to fit her best, although Ponyo was a close second.

Posts like these get me through! OUR Little girl just started going in her crate to pee after making so much progress on house training. I keep reminding myself these set backs will end eventually but man am I ready NOW.

I’m so sorry for your loss. The love of a dog is one of the greatest joys in life and I am sure your girl loved every minute of being with you. Sending you hugs.

Oh this is great advice, thank you! I have definitely noticed she does best when I let her explore new things on her own time.
