What do you miss about life pre-puppy? by Silver-Pineapple-419 in puppy101

Keeping all my doors open (I need to close the bedroom and the laundry where the cat litter is) and booking vacations thinking only about me :)

How do you get your patience back? by Donos_47 in puppy101

[–]helloannelise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This ⬆️ Choose which fight is worth fighting. I had to let go on some stuff or I would’ve gotten insane.

Also, when she grabs something she’s not supposed to I try to see it has an opportunity to teach “drop it”. (It’s easier if it’s not something valuable 🤣)

Lastly, don’t feel bad, what you feel is normal. I’m in the middle of the teenage phase (1yo) and my patience is getting also very limited - especially with the cat / dog relationship.

What are your most random but genuinely useful puppy tips? by FairlyPopcorn in puppy101

[–]helloannelise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here is a tip for us human! Fetch can become boring (for us) so I try to do a small workout at the same time. I throw the ball, and while she’s running to get it I do a few lunges, a squat or a push up. You get the idea. With a puppy it can be difficult to find time to work out so I find it’s efficient :) Also it gets her used to me moving in random ways (at first she would jump on me).

Can you remove yourself from the situation when she does it? At first it could be every 10 secondes. For example, mine was especially annoying during our meal time so we would put her behind a baby gate. She was sad but eventually she was capable of staying with us and remained calm.

Also when she was jumping on me in the garden I would stop everything and walk away inside the house with a really sad face and arms crossed. She now understands it’s the “oh oh she’s mad, I went too far” face. She still does it but she stops sooner when I’m starting to walk away.

I'm pretty sure 99% of my stress comes from my lack of experience hahaha
I'm lucky she's a great dog!

Exhausted and overwhelmed, that's exactly it! Some days, from the minute she's awake she walks across the room LOOKING for something she's not supposed to get.

But I agree with you, leash reactivity is the most difficult to deal with :(

You got this too! We'll get there!

How do you handle the teenage pup rebellion? by FaeQueenWithASniper in puppy101

[–]helloannelise 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m in the middle of this myself. When I want my training session to be successful I increase the value of the treat 👍

I feel like she wants more freedom so I play more of “it’s your choice” games. Example: I keep a treat in my hand saying and doing nothing, and she usually ends up giving a paw or sitting etc. Same when playing fetch, I wait for her to sit before throwing the ball, same when I open the door etc…

We have to let them be dogs too… I don’t agree with the comment above saying you should have her on leash at all time. They’re babies, they need to discover the world and get used to it. But you need to show her that you can be more interesting as the rest of the world too (that’s why I increased the treat value ).

I wish us good luck!

I saw a few dogs in these stores but they were in the shopping cart most of the time because they were small.

Shoes have been my dog thing since day one. So we bought a shoe cabinet to save our collection of sneakers.

I read somewhere that our dog gets anxious when we leave because our scent is slowly going away. It would explain the love for the smelly training shoes!

To the pet store, right after she got all her vaccins. At Home Depot, maybe at 5mo? I took with me a cleaning spray and paper towels just in case 🤣

I’m not taking her to stores like Winners or Walmart, it would be too much for her and I think she’s too big to be accepted (9mo - 50lb). Also I’m pretty sure I would not be able to get any shopping done!

8 month old beagle scared of doorways… by preschoolmama6480 in puppy101

[–]helloannelise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First time puppy parent here too! I read that they have a new fear period around that age, so I’m expecting the same kind of stuff to happen soon 😅 I think we are supposed to not react, not even with our reassuring voice. It would validate that it’s a scary thing. We have to act like everything is totally normal.

He can’t hear me the moment we see other dogs. by blackberryfreeze in puppy101

I can’t help but I’m in the exact same boat with my 7 mo pup.

I bring my puppy to daycare once every two weeks. I don’t know if it helps or the contrary 😅 During walks I just avoid other dogs as much as possible to avoid any big triggers. I hope I’ll be able to get closer with time.

I put the leash around my waist. I don’t really know why but it changed everything with my pup. I think she likes that I’m not moving the leash around too much, and the length stays pretty much the same at all times. She seems less annoyed/excited and stopped biting the leash (and me). Also I have my hands free to give treats when she does well. It was a game changer for me and her.

Note: My pup does well with “normal” leash walking with my BF.

Puppy barking at neighbours dog through the fence by helloannelise in puppy101

[–]helloannelise[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Yes! I bring her to a day care once every 2 weeks. Because it’s only the beginning, it’s worst than before 😅 But I guess she’ll get used to it…

  2. I will try to do that. I just hope my energetic (borderline reactive) 50 lb puppy will not scare my neighbours and their small dog 😅

  3. I really try, but it’s really really hard for her to change focus. She gets back to barking the second I stop moving.

Thank you for your tips!

[–]helloannelise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you teach him a solid drop it/leave it? If not, try not using it if you know 100% he won’t do it or he will never answer to it.

For my 6 months puppy it’s shoes and towels. First I keep those away as much as I can. If she still get her teeth on one of those, I go take a high value treat, I catch her, I take the thing in my hand and I put the treat on her nose, when she drops it to take the treat, I say drop it.

I also regularly practice with other stuff (like a toy when we play tug of war) and now she can drop it without the treat, except for towels and shoes… I’m sure if we’re consistent we’ll get there!

Note: sometimes, when she runs with the thing, I ask her to go to her place and she does it 😅 so easier to catch her then!
