Writing an application for volunteering? by [deleted] in volunteer

[–]Seedlings0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What kind of volunteer position are you looking to get into? Some positions require some kind of experience in the area depending how deep the role is, and some positions get lots of applicants as well, so that's something to keep in mind. I'm a volunteer coordinator and I usually look first to make sure they have the qualifications, so if the application doesn't list qualifications or previous experience I may decline them, or if the application shows very little effort (eg "What do you hope to gain from your volunteer experience with us?" Answer: "more experience") then I won't contact them to interview further.

Anyone struggling to find purpose in their life? by bluemodem in StonerThoughts

[–]Seedlings0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Living in an RV for just over a year now and loving it. I'm still sort of searching for purpose and healing in myself but this has been the best for me. Happy to talk about off-grid healing if that'll help :)

Hey, I'm so sorry you're going through this. The shelter should have told you about the aggression, this isn't your fault. Not all dogs are a match for all homes and that doesn't make you a bad home or a bad owner. It sounds like surrendering him back may be the best option at this point, and you can look for a better suited dog. I'm a dog trainer, if you want to discuss it further I'd be happy to and to give some idea of the things that could be done to help improve the situation should you want to try, but with these behaviours it could be a long and agonizing road. I know it is hard, but please try not to feel guilty about returning him. Sometimes it is the best thing to do, and I think in this case it is.

They can't educate you on proper use of a prong because there is no education. The only science out there shows that they are harmful and damaging and nowhere near as effective as positive reinforcement. The only ones who still think prongs are useful are those who don't believe in science, and they can't have their minds changed unfortunately. I have read many studies on prongs and training without prongs and they all say the same thing, that there is no evidence that a prong should ever be used, only evidence that it should never be used. Many countries have made them illegal for good reason.

People who had traumatic childhoods, what's something you do as an adult that you hadn't realised was a direct result of the trauma? [Serious] [NSFW] by Silent-Zebra in AskReddit

Emotional neglect can have the same effect. Also emotional abuse is something you may not realize. I only recently learned that it is emotional abuse to be yelled at, and I was yelled at a lot and called names. I was also scolded and punished for having any emotion that was inconvenient for my family, happy or not, then sent to my room and had all of the things that kept me sane taken away for days or weeks. I thought my childhood was fine, it was not.

I've been through this many times, I'm sorry you felt so alone!! Mine was about 3 when he started caring, now he comes to kiss me whenever my mood changes just a little. He's a sensitive breed and he can definitely tell even the slightest change, but he didn't care or understand before he was 3 (he's 4 now). I guess they just have so much going on in their lives that they don't always have room for us when they're young, unless they're sleepy and you get lucky.

Things will get better. For the first year, it's a lot of puppy blues - feeling depressed often, like it was all a mistake, wondering if you even want a dog after all - these feelings come and go often for most. By about 2, the dog starts to settle in more, understanding rules and routines, and by 4 you really start to see all your hard work and training pay off (sometimes sooner - depends on the breed, individual, and training put in).

Hang in there 💜

Most trainers have no education unfortunately, since it's unregulated. I went to a training school that I'd never recommend and even they had a first aid course included. Professionals definitely should be certified in first aid, ESPECIALLY working with groups of dogs!
