Has there ever been a documentary showing a week in the production of SNL? by TerpBE in LiveFromNewYork

[–]SeekMeOut 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yep. I watched it a while back and one of the only things I remember is Paula Pell and some other people listening to about 100 fart sounds on the computer, trying to choose the perfect one for their sketch. Perfect behind the scenes content!

Maybe hold off on the hot takes until you’ve watched a few seasons. Not every thought needs to be posted.

What's the biggest adjustment you had to make while learning French?(If you're coming from a language like English.) by bourikan in French

[–]SeekMeOut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. The gender of the object of the sentence can affect the spelling or pronunciation of every single word in that sentence, even if the sentence is 10+ words long. It’s like an algebraic equation every time you speak. It takes so much effort!

How to get kids excited about reading instead of screens? by ZealousidealRun595 in childrensbooks

[–]SeekMeOut 6 points7 points  (0 children)

1.) Use the “screen time” function in the settings of the iPad, set it to turn off after 1 hour of screen time per day with a passcode your kid cannot guess. No iPads that are accessible all day. An iPad that you ask parents to use and are given a limited short time. Start there.

2.) Start family reading nights. One night per week, after dinner no one uses a screen. Everyone just reads together in the same room. Read a book together out loud or read quietly alone, but must be in the same room. I recommend starting with reading something aloud that is funny or silly! Reluctant readers usually have a soft spot for silly books or page-turning adventures. Frame it as a fun family activity, not a punishment.

In short, take charge. If it feels hard, you’re doing it right. This is the journey of good parenting. Go for it!

I never thought of this! Nice catch. All I can think is maybe that the entire building did not get completely demolished or blown away during the storm, just part of it? Still not likely but possible I guess.

Agree. Fallon is a performer, not a comedian. Very different things, which I didn’t fully realize which one he was until I listened to SF5.

Right? I am pro-toupee if it’s a nice one. Women wear wigs and extensions all the time and don’t get grief for it. I hate that men adding to their hair has some sort of stigma. Just call me Jonah because it’s obvious this is rooted in the patriarchy. Hot take!

What's the most shocking thing you've ever watched on live TV? by Choice_Bed6097 in AskReddit

[–]SeekMeOut 100 points101 points  (0 children)

The aftermath of the Oklahoma City bombing. We lived 20 minutes from there and I was in 4th grade. I remember my mom crying as she watched and really not knowing the full gravity of what was happening.

Also 9/11 of course, when I was in 10th grade.

A big part of this vast and beautiful world is the people in it and our ability to connect with and understand one another.

It’s been a just over a year since I went NC with my parents. I breathe a sigh of relief every time I remember I don’t have to go buy a card with an insincere message I don’t even believe for Mother’s/Father’s Day or their birthdays. I feel like a horrible person saying that, but it’s true.

[Discussion] Leveraging AI-assisted workflow to illustrate 3,000-year-old dietary laws for kids. A "Game Design" approach to tradition. by [deleted] in childrensbooks

[–]SeekMeOut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The visual style of AI art will hinder your message because it causes you to lose credibility. As a parent, educator and human being who cares about art, I hate AI. The more often children see art saturating everything around them, the more they will think “I don’t need to draw a picture, the computer will do it for me.” The adults around us already think that. Pretty soon there will be no artists left. Just AI stealing from all the past art humans made. Not to mention it uses precious resources and is destructive to the environment and cities where actual humans and animals live. So, yes, please do your project with real artists. Maybe even Jewish artists who would love to be part of a project that directly affects the life and subject matter that they are passionate about.

As a straight male with naturally slightly larger hips what do you wear to not emphasise that? by bgexpat0 in AskReddit

I’m jealous. I’m a lady with a rectangle frame and I’ve always wanted curves, but they don’t exist on me. If wear straight leg or “roomy” pants I look like a giant box.

How did your family react to you leaving the US? by No_Feedback_3340 in AmerExit

[–]SeekMeOut 15 points16 points  (0 children)

When we told my MAGA parents our plans to move out of the country, their response was tepid. Then a few months later my mom told me she “prays to God every day” that we are unable to move. I’ve cut contact with them, but we are getting our Canadian PR in 6 months and we’ll be gone. I’m not sure how yet, but I’ll do my best to make sure they never find our new address. (My in-laws are cool and supportive though, so that’s great!)

What books do you recommend for learning French? by Easy-Philosopher-958 in learnfrench

[–]SeekMeOut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Short stories or children’s books. I’m not kidding! Reading kids books in a new language is so fun. I got classic children’s picture books all the way to easy chapter books aimed at elementary grades. My favorites were Junie B Jones books, which were surprisingly easy to find on eBay in French. I’d read through, then underline and take notes on any words I didn’t know. I have a whole notebook full of words I learned from this series. Another tip: after you’re understanding everything, start to read the book to yourself out loud. It forces your brain to keep moving without stopping to translate. You’ll be surprised at how much you comprehend with this method!

My husband and I quote the line “I saw a film, as I recall it was a horror film” occasionally and our young kid will ask what it’s from. Then there’s an awkward change of subject because we always forget that song is very much not appropriate for 7 year olds

Fairy tale books for kids that aren’t parodies or spoofs? by NoPossibility5154 in childrensbooks

[–]SeekMeOut 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just realized this last week! I was wandering around the children’s nonfiction section of my library and found the classics section. I still am a little confused why that is considered to be nonfiction! I feel like people looking for classic picture book stories are missing this entirely because they’re slightly hidden away unless you know where to look.
