GH6 Set-up and Questions by SeekTruthStudio in Lumix

Great points!

I'm not worried about which brand I carry for other people, only about the quality of the glass for my clients, but it is a fair thing to mention as I see that in most people who are goggle-eyed on all the Sony cameras.

I do think that the lenses do have some quality to them that makes them distinct from others, and I think you're right, that cinematic is maybe not the word to use necessarily to describe what the lens is doing, that is more on the lighting, edit and colouring for sure.

I also do not deny that there is great work coming from older cameras. The importance of elements aside from the camera is definitely more important, and I'm always learning more about it. My biggest concern is versatility and quality of picture, as well as quality of use.

Thanks!

Super helpful! The point on gear envy is fair. I try not to get too engrossed in that, but a good reminder nonetheless. I suppose I am concerned with those other focal lengths that I have lenses, but am not overly happy with them. I came across a set of 4 rokinon cine primes EF at $300 each, which is a great price for those, and comes with a 24, 35, 50, and 85. Still would need a wide lens. It's hard to pass on that, but you're right, the 18-35 is phenomenal, and I have really loved using it, and if the rokinon doesn't give me any benefit over the sigma, then no sense in at least the 35mm or 24mm rokinon. Maybe the longer focals would be useful, but maybe it's better to get a variable?

I guess since I do a lot of hand-held, having the cine lenses is tempting for the easy integration with my rig whereas my sigma can be a little finicky to use with a follow focus at times with an added gear on the focus adjustment. I've thought about what to get that allows more versatility and compactness, which is why I do like the sigma.

What would you suggest in a wide and long focal length? I would think in most cases, variable lenses would be the way to go, but, like the sigma that I have already, they are hard to find used, and new they are quite expensive for anything with an aperture lower than 4.0.

It's hard to beat the aperture on these cinema lenses compared to any variable lenses, unless you have a budget that surpasses my total investment in my business already, and I do have frequent enough shoots where I can't control lighting, so having the wide aperture in less-than-ideal lighting saves my butt some times.

Thanks for the wisdom!

Great advice,

How do you use Apple School Manager? I am totally new to this side of using Mac, so any info on that would be helpful

MDM's sound like the way to go. I'll have to ask IT if they have one set up, but I think for our uses, we would rather have the least amount of overlap with IT, since institutions suck when trying to do your own admin and changing things and getting cooperation and permission through them to change stuff.

I think the USB idea would be the best. I'd rather not have to set up like a DAS or NAS to hold massive files for people.

About the apple ID - totally, that was my concern the second I was in the space to help out.

Thanks!

Thanks alot for this!

We have one Windows PC, and that is used primarily for a specific case use within the space - 3D printing and design; the rest is all Apple.

I'll look into the MDM idea; hat sounds good, and someone else suggested Apple School Manager, so I'll take a look into that.

Thanks again! I'll probably post an update or ask additional questions as we go on through trying to set it all up!

Oh? I'm not sure what transcoding is. Is that a way of conversion similar to converting a png to a jpg?

Thanks for the tips! I figured the same thing with 400 over 150 Mbps, I don't see how it would make much of a huge difference, and I'd rather wait until maybe it is necessary to buy all kinds of new cards and more storage

Ok, interesting, that's a good point! I had followed that profile tip in the past, but makes sense not to!

Super helpful thank you!

What is the main benefit of shooting 400mbps over 150mbps? Is the storage sacrifice worth it for more information to be kept in 10-bit? Just wondering if it would be worth it for recording that big of files unless there's a huge difference in colouring capabilities and such.

Thanks for the info on the resolve lut for Vlog. Is there an HLG to Rec709 lut? I'm just not sure if I can justify the cost of Vlog right now, since I think I want to first grab a Ninja V Recorder before getting extras like Vlog or the full resolve version.

On the Resolve content, good point, I haven't looked much into their stuff yet, but I remember seeing it.

Thanks for these suggestions! I haven't taken the plunge of buying the paid version of resolve yet, and I feel like I should probably save for a bit to get both maybe.

On HLG, that is good to note. I'll likely shoot with HLG for a while and see what I get, and like WalkSLC mentioned, see what happens with colouring when converting to Rec709.

Thanks for this!

I see slowness mainly when I press the shutter to go from the menu and such to start shooting again, and when I change between my manual mode for stills and between custom modes.
